9 Chapter 9

He woke up to loud knocking on the door, half annoyed and half tired he slowly made his way towards the door. Before open, the door he looked at himself in the small circular mirror, the only memorable thing he bought from their old house. Why he bought it he didn't know, but the rims were fake wood that didn't get destroyed in the fire, so he kept it. Mostly to save money but also because it's what they did every morning before they both left to work. They'd hug each other in front of the mirror looking at each other's reflections before making sure they looked good at the start of every date.

The loud knocking bought him out of his thought. He had a guess it was his neighbors and the wide smiles of the familiar faces that greeted him proved it right. He smiled back at them before gesturing them to talk,

"yes?' he said in a soft tone, despite not being sure if he wanted to see them.

"we weren't sure if you had anything set up to cook or a meal prepped since we didn't really see you take out any from your car-" the lady started to ramble before her husband interjected in between,

"what she means to say is, would you like to come to have dinner? I swear the kids are very polite and won't bother you at all" he spoke softly as if some else weren't supposed to hear this conversation.

"maybe they're the types who forget humans aren't like them and speak softly as fuck because of their hearing, wonderful." he thought somewhat sarcastically in his mind.

He thought about the offer, he didn't want to end saying there's nothing to lose then lose something. Not that he had anything left. He wanted to keep it quiet and stay invisible, if their staring didn't bother him so much, he would've never approached them but then again, he needs a job, and maybe some people who'd have his back would be nice.

'no, I can't do that again, I've got enough people killed with my problems, one quick dinner, avoid personal questions and it'll be fine, besides its more suspicious if I said, they probably don't smell any food in the house, but getting takeout could be a good excuse?'

He contemplated everything in his head in a few seconds before finally deciding that one diner would be harmless, behind all the strange upfront they seem like good decent people. But they had kids, they had a family he didn't need to take away, so there's no need to be friends or ask their help with his matters. If anyone were to die to it, he only wanted it to be him and nobody else. He'd never let a single person die again for him, no matter the cost.

'I would like to, dinner would be really nice" he smiled at them, "okay so we'll see you in half an hour, that's enough time to get ready right?" he heard the man say with a small laugh.

"yeah, it is, I'll see you then, thank you by the way" he replied, "no problem, we'd love to get to know you anyway" the lady replied sweetly.

He cringed internally and shut the door with a small 'yeah sure', he just hoped it wasn't too uncomfortable end to the conversation and turned around to head to his bathroom and take a shower before he left. He'd only have one diner with them might as well look his best.

He picked out a classic black shirt and regular jeans trying to also keep it casual and headed inside to take his shower.

As the hot water hit his body, he slowly realized he still had the ring in his finger. He didn't know if he wanted to take it off and subconsciously traced the designs and his initials. He's surprised they didn't question it yet, since it did look like an engagement ring, but it was good they hadn't noticed it and that he had a chance to take it off before they do at the diner. He took it off and tossed it gently on the white towel kept on the bathroom's counter.

This might help him get his job, the man could obviously afford the large house and a family of five, he seems to be well off in the area maybe he had connections that could him. but then again, they didn't know each other at all, would it be too desperate to ask them about it? He just prayed that it brought up in the conversation and they have a way to help him.

Closing his eyes, he wanted to enjoy the peace and stillness the mood had right now, the town was quiet at night, there wasn't any noise outside apart from the occasional car. It was given from the fact of how small the town was but then why the celebration when he came into? Maybe he should ask about that. There's a lot to uncover, and he'd do it one by one wanting to map out the place, keep himself aware and safe from everything for as long as he can.

After rinsing the shampoo from his hair and finishing his shower, he stepped out in a towel with a second one wrapped around his hair. Which were slightly curled up and a bit longer, he scrunched the water away from it trying to dry it as quickly as possible before getting ready in the outfit he had already picked out. He decided against using any form of perfume because he knew the kids' sensitive smell would get irritated and he didn't need to give the couple any sort of trouble with screaming and crying children.

Although he used a small amount of hair balm to keep his small curls in place, which always made sure to buy something unscented since the people from his old pack despite not being children never liked the scented products that were made for humans, it always smelled 'too obnoxiously strong.'

With one last check in the small circular mirror by the door, he stepped outside into the cold air, to walk to his first dinner with people after his family died for a second time. He just prayed it all worked out in his favor and he got some of what he wanted from it or else the dinner would really be a waste, he felt like he was just using them to get by but then again it wasn't like he could involve them into his matter or if they'd even want to after they find out who he's really running from.

With one deep breath he put his hand out and knocked on their door, he heard vices moving about and people running inside.

'I thought It was only them and their kids, there are more than six people inside, damn it. I should've said no.'
