20 Chapter 20

The dog was panting hard as they got back to the truck to head home. “That ought to tire you out,” Robin said, as he climbed up, once Mags was secure on the passenger side. Robin had genuinely expected Hendrix to be in the field. If ever there was a time in America someone would need to sit and summon his courage, it was that week in mid-September of 2001.

“Home, sweet home, Renny.” Robin unlocked the door and went inside. “I mean Mags.” One name from then on was the rule. Robin hopped in the shower, straightened up a bit, and then fixed some lunch he decided to eat outside on the porch. He backed out the door, with Mags at his side. Juggling a plate, a glass, a magazine, and his portable CD player, Robin tried to shut the door

“Should I get that?”

Robin froze.

“I thought maybe you’d moved away.”
