20 Chapter 20 Wait for Me

Paul who beside him starts to tap his shoulder, "Look at its chest area."

A bit puzzled by this, Berthold's eyes start to go down and he was started to shudder. After the scene of gory where the Alpha wolf's face was full of blood, he saw that its chest is hollow. Along with the silvery fur of its back, the healthy white bone of its ribcage could be seen.

From what he knows, every living creature should have many important organs protecting by the ribcage bone. He doesn't need to tell what all the important organ does it? But here, an Alpha wolf with a hollow chest?

Berthold started to tighten the grip on his spear handle, this new abomination was surely scaring all his soldiers even when he not sure how to handle this situation.

The Alpha wolf only standing there, after its impactful entry there were not many other wolves that could stand so all attention was gathered at this monster alone.

Berthold then noticed that the blood on the Alpha wolf started to travel down to its ribs and he noticed a blood-colored blob that starts to twitch as it absorbing all the blood from the Alpha wolf's mouth.

In just a few seconds, the bloodied in Alpha wolf's fur vanished and the gleaming silver skin awed the others. That was what could happen except the visible ribcage now only shows dread upon the human.

"Berthold looks, there is someone inside the ribcage!" Paul shouted as he pointed at the ribcage area.

Berthold was shocked that what Paul says was true and he noticed that someone could be a girl. He cannot see her face but he sure that he knows her. He started to frown. He noticed her dress, her grass-colored dress was dirty because of the dirt and blood and he could see that she was tied to some of the ribcage bone.

She slumped down and not moving, and like magic was inside the space of it, when the Alpha wolf moves the shakes inside of the ribcage was not bad as he imagined. Wait, the Alpha wolf moved?

Before Berthold could react, he noticed his body was pulled away to the side, "Wake up, the Alpha wolf start its rampage!"

Paul's shout wakes Berthold out and he noticed that the Alpha wolf attack was dangerous than he imagined. The Alpha wolf started to move by leaping through and landed at the highest number of people. The soldiers were taken by surprise and received a blow just when the Alpha wolf landed.

Seeing a monstrous Alpha wolf already flying on top of your head makes many fall to the ground in fear and was smashed to pulp. Not stopping at that the Alpha wolf started to bite nearby soldiers and blood spurted all over the place.

"Steady! Steady yourself, man! Stay yourself away!" Berthold's shout started to get between the fear of his men.

Paul already launched himself and landed a blow to the Alpha wolf's hind leg and gained its attention. Thanked him in his heart, Berthold started to gather his men to take their horse. They were cavalry anyway, it's better to hit them with a cavalry charge.

Paul's men opened up a way for Berthold to take the Alpha wolf's attention but were faced with a fast claw attack. The situation was worsening, their body alone cannot withstand a blow from such an attack even the wind generated by a swing of its claw was enough to push and hurts a soldier.

They were geared to face normal animals like wild boar or the highest should be a forest bear in this trip to mine a rock, they not ready to face a 5-meter tall abomination which taking appearance of Alpha wolf.

They regret not having more spear-throwing now, but what could they do?

Paul was now the only one attacking the Alpha wolf, holding a heavy saber and small dagger he blocked a blow from the Alpha wolf as he counters attacking its leg. The face and neck of the Alpha wolf were too high to attack, so he planned to restrict its movement but the blow was too small for its size.

And Paul started to receive injury all over his body.

"Knight Berthold's Cavalry is here!" a shout from a soldier surprised the other.

They turned around to see a group of cavalry started to rush out of the cave and cheered at them. They started to move away and saw the cavalry started to from spearhead formation leads by Berthold himself.

Hearing the clap of hooves, Paul distanced himself as turned his head with a worried expression. This puzzled Berthold, but their charge was already en route. So he turned his face to the Alpha wolf and he opened his eye in surprise.

The Alpha wolf was prepared more than he thought, it spread its four legs like ready to pounce. Does it think that a simple pounce could stop us? But suddenly his attention was turned to its ribcage, toward the prisoner that tied inside.

"Helminna!!"

His shout was the trigger for the Alpha wolf to jump, the hind leg was injured, so it cannot jump too high, the Alpha wolf fang already coming near and the position was enough for him to see clearly the face of the prisoner. He gritted his teeth and raised his spear, "Scatter!"

The command was taken as fast as they could hear it, the spearhead formation was broken apart and they rushing out for different locations. So the wolf pounce was failed. Berthold pulled up his stead rein and turned around.

"So that was the reason for blood on your mouth! You killed the other units that manage to find you holding her!" His anger was enough to make him charging ahead, but he holds himself, he should think more about how to save his lover, and to do that he needs to make sure that the ribcage was not hard enough to stop his spear.

His men which surrounded the Alpha wolf also started to prepare themself to rescue their mistress. They hold their spear tighter and started to move in a circle. The Alpha wolf's eye started to wander side to side. Its glowing red eyes not showing any panic or confusion, it stared at them like mocking their attempt.

The cavalry started to increase their speed in moving in a circle, making the Alpha wolf start to get alert. In between a group of three cavalries started to rush out of the formation and attacking from three different locations.

However before they could get near, a fast side slash from Alpha wolf smashed them. With a flick of the claw, it starts to lick the blood with a satisfied grin.

"It's making light of us!" Berthold glared in anger, "If three cannot stop you, then let's take eight!"

This time, eight cavalries along with him start to charge out. His eyes start to get alert to the Alpha wolf claw, so he started to strike from the side. His eyes traveled to Helminna which is prisoned inside and he vowed to release her fast.

However this time, the strike from the Alpha wolf was getting fiercer than before. When before was only like a wind smashing at you, this time was like a tornado strike. The strike pulled the others in and they were sliced into parts. Berthold was luckier, he manages to guards himself but got knocked out of his stead.

A claw still manages to injure his shoulder and the blood starts to gush out. Holding his spear to support his body, he could not believe his armor was pierced. Almost falling down, Paul rushed at him in time and managed to help him stand, "This is bad, I could hear another howl in the distance. We need to leave."

Berthold snapped his head to the side and glared at Paul, "What!? Are you out of your mind? I need to save Helminna, Now!"

"With injured body and the small number of people? We could be surrounded if the other wolf den was like them, we have to get out. We don't have enough horse for you to give as a snack for them." Paul's persistence to leave this place forced Berthold to silence.

Berthold was so angry that he coughed blood, he could only grimace in pain as he was lifted up by Paul and being put into the cart. He turned around and noticed that Paul's men were already prepared to run. Noticing his stare, a soldier scratched his neck shyly, "We were ordered to retreat if we see your unit failed to attack, Lord Knight."

Berthold could not care less any more than to roll his eyes at them. His eyes then turned to the Alpha wolf that surprisingly not chasing them, but stand in place. He noticed that blood on the area started to gather at that location and he frowned.

'Wait for me, Helminna... I swear to save you.' His view started to blur, and he hopes that the escape this time should not be dangerous as when they come.
