19 Chapter 19 New headache

Berthold's unit finally arrived at the high cliff after fighting so much trouble against the assaults of the wolves, their horses also were scratched and start to bleed slowly. Few of his unit decides to unmount, to tends their injuries. The high cliff area was in the clearing of the forest, and they saw many glowing eyes surrounding them.

Strangely, the assaults of the wolves started to stop as they arrived in this place, where they were only surrounded by a group of wolves.

"My lord, the situation seems so strange right now." A cavalry approached him when he falls into thought.

Berthold nodded his head with a serious expression, "I know, it seems that they are trying to gather us in this place. But why?"

He then started to observe their surrounding. They decide to stay afar from the forests area and closing to the cliff, there is more than 5 meters away and he was not sure that the enemy would reach us fastest or not.

Turning around his head upwards, he didn't see any strange boulder or rock that would rain at them. So what makes this place getting avoided by the wolves.

"My lord, there is movement over there!"

A cavalry, mounted on his horse which was one of the lookouts shouted, then pointed in a certain direction.

"Is it enemy attack?" A tired cavalry frowned as he gripped his spear and pulling the horse rein prepared to charges.

"Wait up! Lower your weapons!" Berthold's shouting surprised the others, but they followed his orders and slowly lowering their weapons.

Berthold then glanced again at the location, right on their left side he found that a hole can be seen at the cliff wall.

"A cave? There should be no cave in this area." He frowned.

His thought was interrupted by a yell from that cave, "Hey Berthold!"

To Berthold and his unit's surprise, Paul poked his head out of the cave as he waving his hand, to this surprise meeting, he flashing his iconic smile, "Come over here!"

So he was survived?

Berthold turned his head around and saw that his unit was happy to meet Paul, and he sighed in relief. Along with his units, they moved towards the cave. Strangely the eyes watching them still do nothing.

Walking inside the cave, Berthold noticed that this cave was dug recently. He then turned towards Paul who guided him, "I have many questions, but for now I'll leave it at one. How did you find this cave?"

Paul only turned his face to the side and smirked, "Oh, I'm do 'find' this spot, but there is no cave."

"What?"

"You will understand." Seeing Paul's wide grin, Berthold could guess what he does and makes him almost slapping his forehead.

Unfortunately, his guess was right. After few moments of walking, they found Paul's unit with their wagons full of rock, and some of them still trying to enlarge this cave.

"Paul, I think you should stop for a moment…" Berthold could not help but pinched his nose bridge as he lowering his head.

Berthold's voice was not loud but was not small enough so the soldiers stopped mid swings then turning their heads to their two Knight captains.

"Actually what I mean, for you take a rock from the west is from the boulder and round rock on the area just beside this cliff…"

"Is there a place like that?"

Berthold sighed as he looked at the uneven and brittle sand-rock inside the cart, "I think I lend you three of my scout?"

Like remembering something, Paul scratched his neck, "Ah yes, I think they do tell me about something. Well, two of them was already mauled by the wolf's claw though."

'It's three actually.' Berthold's headache starts to sting again.

After allowing his men to rest along with the other soldiers, He walked alone with Paul to the entrance of the cave.

"Just for information, the last scout that managed to reach us was killed when I come to look for you so we decided to split into two units."

Hearing Berthold's words, Paul was shocked, "What? Did he die? Does the wolf was targeting him first?"

Berthold shakes his head as he leans to the wall behind him, "What more strange, they were not attacking us when we reach this place."

He turned around to see that Paul was deep in thought, "Do you have anything in mind?"

Paul scratched his head like he unsure of something, "I agree that the wolf's attack was fierce at our side too. But as we already experienced the horror in the capital we could handle this type of enemy."

Hearing this, Berthold nodded his head. He also noticed that Paul's unit was not received much damage than he thought.

"However, when we reach this place their attack was ended just like that. That is when I saw a small light somewhere in the wall. And I found this."

Paul then pulled out a shining raven-colored round stone. The whole body was dyed in black but a moment later they could see a shining light emerging and vanishing in a wave-like motion.

"W-What is this?" Berthold frowned, it doesn't look sinister but it was strange. There was no ore like this, heck, this cliff should not have any precious ore at all.

Paul raised the stone to his eye's height, "It is only as big as Princess Karina's little fist. I thought that we can found more so I decide to search more but this is the only one I found."

Not long after, the forest in front of them started to shakes. Both of them were surprised and rushed out only to hear a wolf howl all around them. They exchanged glances and nodded.

Paul pocketed the stone in his trouser pocket and using his free hand to finger whistling.

Wheeeeee!

The sound of whistling traveled down to the cave and reached the other

"We got a situation! Prepare to fight!"

"Get up! Get up! Take your arms!"

"Hey someone, help me bring sir Paul weapon!"

Meanwhile, outside of the cave, Berthold and Paul saw that number of wolves start rushing at them. Why did they decide to attack now?

Seeing them getting nearer, Paul started to crack his finger, "This is going to my time to fight barehanded then?"

Berthold who was standing beside him sighed as he holds his spear, then raising his right hand at Paul who staring at him in wonder. He then noticed a dagger on Berthold's hand.

"Ah, okay thanks." He grasped the dagger that quite small for his hand. He played it for a moment before he noticed something, "Ah, isn't it that dagger?"

Berthold takes the first move just before the wolves already at pouncing distance, he twirled the spear in his hand and the spear moved around, slashing two necks with just one swing, "Don't bother too much, we need every weapon that counts!"

Paul laughed, his big body start to bulldoze forward.

His attack was simple a forward stab to their head, a side swing right at the neck, and a powered punch in the back. The battle started to ease as the other soldiers joined the battle to thin the enemy number.

"Does their movement seems rigid than before?" Berthold exclaimed in the midst of battle.

He pulled out for a moment to observe. He looked around and saw that there were clearly two sides in this battle. Not entirely like the left side against the right side. But more like, and area.

Berthold evaded a vigorous wolf and moved his hand, his legs started to glide and he approached another area leaving the beheaded wolf. This time the wolf doesn't have the energy to pounce was easier for him.

He moved and reached the center of this strange phenomenon and tapped the shoulder of certain someone.

"Ha hahaha! Take that you little doggie! Ah, what?"

Paul just turned around to see Berthold raising an eyebrow at him, "What did you bring to slow them down?"

"This dagger?"

Berthold almost snapped at him, before other shakes from the nearby forest started to get really near. And that monster almost scaring them both to death.

A humongous wolf with silver fur jumped out of the forest and landed with a heavy boom. From its huge mouth, fresh prey's blood-colored its sharp fang. It stood tall with its glowing red eyes freezing countless soldiers into the place as it's staring them down.

Berthold gulped hard down his saliva, "Alpha Wolf... and it's bigger than normal."
