••••••••••••••••••

The Holy Orchid Institute Library was one of the biggest libraries in all of Glory City, second only to those owned by the sovereign families and the Alchemist Association.

It housed over a hundred thousand books, with ninety percent of them being ancient texts, many of which hadn't even been translated yet.

The librarian, an old man known as Mr. Miyagi, watched Nie Li dash around the library, grabbing book after book to take into a reading room.

Nie Li had paid him some money to allow this, but as Mr. Miyagi looked at the stack of a hundred books Nie Li had chosen, he began to regret ever taking this job.

"Boy, you're going to put those back when you're done, right?" Mr. Miyagi called out, hoping for some acknowledgment.

But Nie Li didn't respond; he just slammed the reading room door shut behind him.

Mr. Miyagi sighed deeply.

"I hate my life."

....

Nie Li settled into the small reading room, surrounded by the 100 books he had gathered.

Each one was an untranslated tome from ancient times, spanning different eras like the Sacred Empire, Snow Wind Empire, and Saint Spirit Empire.

He stared at the pile, a bit daunted by the task ahead.

"I'm not even sure how I'm going to read all these," he thought to himself. Yet, despite the challenge, he felt a surge of confidence. "But I trust the system," he reminded himself, ready to dive into the depths of history and knowledge with the system's guidance.

[ Beginning Dream Simulation... ]

Nie Li blinked his eyes open and found himself in the dream simulation once again. This time, instead of being met by a puppet like before, he was faced with an array of strange, giant floating heads suspended in the air around him. A feeling of caution washed over him, urging him to take a step back.

As he retreated, a mysterious image began to form amidst the scattered heads—a circle. Suddenly, a beam of light shot from the circle directly onto Nie Li's head. He braced himself, unsure of what to expect.

Then, like a flood, images, knowledge, and understanding started pouring into his mind. He was learning the languages spoken during the times of the ancient empires, mastering the intricate art of inscription arrays, and grasping the complex relationship between soul force and the world around him. The information was vast and varied, covering topics Nie Li had only dreamed of understanding before.

....

"Hey, kid, your time is up. Either pay up or leave," Mr. Miyagi called out as he opened the door to Nie Li's reading room.

What he saw inside stopped him in his tracks.

Nie Li was just sitting there, surrounded by dozens of books.

None of the books appeared to have been touched, and Nie Li was just... sitting, doing absolutely nothing.

"You okay, son?" Mr. Miyagi asked, a note of concern in his voice as he glanced at Nie Li and snapped his fingers near the boy's face.

Nie Li didn't react. It was as if he was asleep with his eyes wide open.

Mr. Miyagi found it deeply unsettling, one of the most disturbing things he'd ever witnessed.

Without another word, he slowly backed out of the room and gently closed the door.

"I'm quitting tonight. No way in hell am I going to feel safe with that thing around," Mr. Miyagi murmured to himself, shaken by what he had just seen.

....

An hour's walk from the Holy Orchid Institute was a modest house where Zheng Pingru lived.

She was jolted from her evening routine by a knock at the door.

Wearing a skimpy nightgown, which was just a modified gown that was purposefully designed to be just a bulkier lingerie both sexy and capable of hiding weapons, she opened it expecting Nie Li.

Instead, Shen Xiu stood before her, her silhouette framed by the moonlight, sending a shiver of fear through Zheng Pingru.

"Young Miss..." Zheng Pingru began, but before she could finish, Shen Xiu's hand shot out, gripping her face and pushing her inside.

The door closed with a thud, and Zheng Pingru found herself on the floor, scrambling to get up.

"Miss, Miss, Miss, let me explain," Zheng Pingru stammered, trying to keep her composure under Shen Xiu's intimidating presence.

"Okay, explain," Shen Xiu said coolly, crouching down, her face betraying no worry.

"I was... trying to help you get Nie Li into the Sacred Family," Zheng Pingru managed to say, her eyes darting around nervously.

Shen Xiu fixed her with a piercing gaze.

"So, how does the hidden dagger in your gown fit into this plan?" she asked sharply. Zheng Pingru, in a panic, drew her dagger, attempting to stab Shen Xiu, who effortlessly flicked it aside. Shen Xiu then transformed into her demon spirit form, the heat radiating from her causing Zheng Pingru to tremble in fear.

"Now, the truth, or else," Shen Xiu demanded, her claws poised to strike.

"M-Miss, please don't," Zheng Pingru pleaded.

As Shen Xiu's claw lashed out, Zheng Pingru screamed, "Elder Ming!"

Shen Xiu halted.

"Good, now speak."

Zheng Pingru confessed, "Elder Ming ordered me to eliminate Nie Li before you could get to him."

Shen Xiu's annoyance was palpable.

"That damn old man really wants to make an enemy of me."

Standing up, Shen Xiu considered Zheng Pingru, who was now begging on her knees. "Please, young miss, spare me. I'm willing to be your double agent in Elder Ming's camp."

"That sounds tempting," Shen Xiu mused, a flicker of interest in her eyes.

Hope flashed across Zheng Pingru's face, only to be extinguished as Shen Xiu conjured a ball of fire in her hand.

"What can you offer?"

"Information about Elder Nie Ming's schemes?" Zheng Pingru said, sweating bullets.

"I doubt that you are in Elder Nie Ming's inner circle; so, anything useful you can offer."

"I can give you information about Nie Li and his intentions with you," Zheng Pingru said. "Okay, speak."

"Nie Li, after your meeting, came to meet me. He wanted to know what knowledge about inscription arrays would be if he wanted to court you," Zheng Pingru said, shocking Shen Xiu for a second as she stood up.

"Miss," Zheng Pingru said hopefully as Shen Xiu glanced at her.

"Useless information, and you were so quick to betray Elder Ming. Who's to say you won't betray me?" Shen Xiu said coldly, watching as Zheng Pingru turned to flee.

"Trash," Shen Xiu snorted dismissively, raising her hand, ready to burn Zheng Pingru to death.

....

As Zheng Pingru's house was engulfed in flames, screams filled the air.

People scrambled, fetching water in a desperate attempt to douse the fire.

Meanwhile, Shen Xiu slipped away, taking advantage of the chaos to move unseen. She navigated the back alleys with ease, making her way to the Holy Orchid Institute. She entered through the southern gate, conveniently located near the library.

Shen Xiu paused when she spotted Nie Li bustling about the library, returning books to their shelves, while Mr. Miyagi seemed to be avoiding him at all costs.

Watching Nie Li's earnest efforts, a rare, small smile crept onto Shen Xiu's face.

Recalling Zheng Pingru's earlier words, her smile widened just a bit.

"Out of all the men who've tried to court me, you're the first to actually put in some real effort," she thought.

"I suppose I'll at least entertain your attempt."

Despite her usual disdain for such pursuits, Shen Xiu found herself mildly intrigued by Nie Li.

In Shen Xiu's eyes, where power and influence dominated, Nie Li's approach was refreshingly different.

Most men believed their status or good looks could compensate for their lack of genuine effort.

"Let's see how far you're willing to go," she pondered, intrigued not only by Nie Li's talent but also by his daring initiative.

His effort marked a stark contrast to the half-hearted attempts of others, catching Shen Xiu's attention in a world where true effort was often overshadowed by superficial status.

.....

Meanwhile, Lu Piao found himself at the bustling meat bazaar, a lively place filled with butchers trimming meat and skinning demon beasts among other activities. The air was filled with the sounds of chopping and the chatter of customers negotiating prices.

Lu Piao, dressed in his classiest outfit, stood out amidst the hustle and bustle, waiting patiently for Zheng Pingru to show up for what he believed would be a session of Duel cultivation.

"Boy, you've been standing there for the last three hours. Go home."

"Any minute now."
