1 Prologue

It has been a rough week for young Alexander, 'Alex' to his friends: his parents died, his house burned down, and now he has to live with all the other orphans in an orphanage. On the bright side, he discovered he has magic. They may have caused his family to die, but that just gave him a tragic backstory like all his favorite superheroes and supervillains, at least that's how he looks at it.

"Alex? .... Alex?"

"Alexander!" I heard a nagging voice yell.

"What!?" I asked back in my usual, calm manner.

"It's your turn to wash the dishes." The head caregiver told me with an arrogant smirk.

Shit! I was planning on making a deal tonight.

"Fine!" I said while running to the kitchen. Dish cleaning duty is the fucking worst and I have had to do it every other goddamn day since I got here two months ago. I'm 10 and I have to act like a servant to these worthless orphans, shit pisses me off.

I did the dishes as fast as I could, but it still took twenty minutes. After I finished that I ignored the orphans, took a quick shower, and went upstairs to my room. Luckily I managed to get a single room, even if it is as tiny as my old closet.

Reaching under my bed to where I keep my valuables, I grabbed the sacrifice: one rat (alive), 30 pounds, and some kid's favorite book. I moved the rug covering the ritual circle to on top of the door (in order to prevent noise leakage). Then, I double-checked all my preparations and once I was ready, I proclaimed into the nether:

"I, Alexander Nightingale, hereby call upon the might of my Magic. Summon Ravakas, The Lesser."

As the sacrificial rat disappears, a small rat-like humanoid appears out of the smoke coming from the ritual circle.

"Ahhh, if it is not our favorite summoner. What can we do for you today?" It asks oily.

"I require tomes."

"Ahhh yes, always wanting more knowledge. The tomes you can afford with your... payment, are Necromancy for Dummies, Legillimancy: The Art of Invading Others' Minds, and How to Use Prophecies Against Your Enemies."

"I'll take the second."

"Then We have a deal young sorcerer, this tome for this book and the suffering caused it being stolen, keep your Pounds for they are worthless to us." A flash of light and it was gone, leaving nothing but the tome and the Pounds in its place.

Falling to my knees because of the toll imposed on my young body by my magic, I laughed ecstatic with adrenaline-fueled glee. Still giggling from my joy, I crawled to the tome that was laying there.

Grabbing it, I jumped onto my bed and prepared to grow my magical knowledge.

The next day, I jumped out of bed with a grin on my face, ready to 'practice'.
