48 A Friend A Day

The class was pretty interesting, with Professor Flitwick teaching us about all kinds of different charms that exist. A few I've already learned, along with Harry and Clarity. Such as the 'Accio' spell, and the 'Colloportus' charm along with its counterpart, 'Alohomora'. But apparently there are charms for all kinds of different occasions! Parties, gardening, cleaning, studying, etc.

When he talked about the charms to help with studying, everyone perked up, only to deflate when we were told that the spells for that are only being taught to the fourth years. But given my natural skill with magic I should be able to do something…

Anyways, other than the explanation about charms, we were also told about how some of its spells could also fall under the transfiguration branch of magic.

Apparently magic is divided up into different categories based on what they do. Spells that have an immediate effect on something are usually referred to as charms. Spells with the intent to do harm can be described as a jinx, all the way up to a curse depending on its severity.

The branch that he told us has the most overlap with charms is enchantments, since you need to know the charm you want to use in them before you can do it.

When I asked about the extension charm spell, he told everyone that it's not taught at the school. Apparently the Ministry only lets their people learn the spell to 'prevent reckless wizards from endangering the Statute of Secrets' or something like that. Not that it matters to me. It's only a crime if you get caught~.

Anyways, that's how the class goes, more like a history of magic than that class actually was. Before I leave the room, I ask the professor again about learning about goblin culture, and he says that he'll consider it! It wasn't an outright no, which means that if I pester him enough about it he'll eventually give in!

I go to try and talk to Harry again, but Ron drags him away again! Seriously, does he have a grudge against me or something? Or is he really petty enough that he won't let siblings interact with each other if they're in different houses?

Anyways, with a period free before Defense Against the Dark Arts, the gang of Draco, Tracy, and Daphne decide to explore some more. Though Daphne is still acting kind of aloof. But she can't fool us, given how passionate she was hearing about my and Harry's situation.

Anyways, as we walk, we talk. Draco and Daphne tell us about life as members of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, Tracy talks about how she was the baddest bitch in her neighborhood, and I tell them about the weird voice and occasional disembodied music I sometimes hear.

As well as the stench of rotting food that's been following me around for a while.

(AN: "Whoops." Grabs napkins, saying 'ew' as I remove the nasty hamburger. Spray some air freshener and plug the hole with a piece of wood I got a while ago but forgot to actually use.)

My friends sniff the air, trying to catch a whiff of what I'm talking about. Though I'm not sure why they would want to be able to smell rotten food…

Daphne is the first to catch something. "Why does it smell like freshly washed laundry…?"

I sniff as well now, and to my surprise the bad smell is gone. Like she said, it's been replaced with a smell resembling fresh linens. "Huh. I guess someone finally cleaned it up." I get chuckles at my response.

Anyways, exploring ends up being more of the same, just long corridors, empty classrooms, and the occasional ghost acknowledging us as they phase out of some random object nearby. We did see Peeves, the poltergeist, but instead of trying to do anything he simply scowls at us. Or rather, me. Probably mad about me messing up his prank. Speaking of, how did he phase a solid object through a wall? Something to consider later, I guess.

We make our way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, and there I see that we're having class with the Hufflepuffs! I wave to Clarity as we sit down, her returning it with a smile.

We're all excited for the class, learning about the monsters of the wizarding world and how to fight against them. When Professor Quail comes in, bringing an odd smell with him, everyone scrunches their collective noses.

He takes roll, looking slightly surprised when he calls my name. 'Why are people still being surprised by me? They all heard about me when we did the Sorting Ceremony!'

Despite my irritation, as long as the class is interesting I can deal with it.

So, the class was extremely boring. He told us about what we WOULD be learning, but didn't actually TEACH us anything. At some point it turned into the class asking him questions about himself, like why he wears a turban.

He told us that it was a gift from someone from another country he saved from a vampire attack, and my interest is finally caught again. Are they the people type, or the 'all people are our food' kinds? And how did he fight the vampire off?

Unfortunately, we don't hear about his supposed adventure. I say supposed since when someone asked that exact question he turned into a stuttering mess and started talking about the weather.

'Are we really going to be ok with this guy as our teacher?' Not only did he not teach us anything, but he assigned us homework too! I decide right then and there that I don't like the guy.

Anyways, with our last class of the day done, I decide to check in with Clarity. Thankfully nobody from her class tries to drag her off somewhere. Though she is talking with one of the girls in her House. Seeing me approaching, she waves at me, while her friend tenses when she sees the color of my robes.

"Susan, this is my best friend from before I came to Hogwarts, Misha Potter."

The newly introduced girl shyly raises a hand in greeting before her brain seems to catch up with Clarity's words. Her eyes sparkle as she starts to ask a question. "Potter? Or you by any chance-"

"Yes. Harry Potter is my brother." I roll my eyes. "Both of our last names are 'Potter', so I would think that it was self-evident."

She blushes while Clarity frowns at me. She speaks as my Slytherin friends come up behind me. "Are you alright Misha? That sounded, well, rather like how I would talk to someone I don't like."

I sigh, rubbing the spot between my eyebrows. "You're right. Sorry Sussan. But this is like the sixth time I've been asked something like that, and we're only halfway through the second day. It's bloody irritating."

She nods in sympathy while Susan gives a sympathetic nod. "Anyways, we have the rest of the day off, so we were probably going to go exploring after checking out the House scores. Want to join us?"

"We'd love to, but we have Potions in a little over an hour and we'd hate to be late."

I nod. "That's understandable, but we can show you where the classroom is, it's actually right nearby where the scores are. So we can walk together!"

She beams at me. "That sounds delightful. Will you be joining us as well, Susan?"

She gives me and the Slytherins around me wary looks, so Draco steps up to reassure her. "It would be an honor for a member of the Bones family to accompany us. If you would?" He holds out a hand and she giggles in response, taking it with a hesitant smile.

"Very well, young master Malfoy."

As we make our way to our destination, I speak. "Your last name is 'Bones'? Does your family specialize in some kind of bone magic?"

Clarity smacks the back of my head for my phrasing while the others laugh.
