The night came quickly after that, and Rudolf and Kaifin continued to play their game as Heiko read by the fire. Cele ended up joining him, pulling a chair close and feeling bold enough to ask about particularly odd spellings of Simonese words as he read in the foreign tongue. Heiko answered each succinctly before returning to his text.

Eventually, Cele grew bored and looked over to the ancient text that sat gingerly in Heiko’s elegant hands. The pages were yellowing, but the penmanship was remarkable – even with some characters that were unknown to the Ilysian, he could tell that much. It was bound in leather, which was dyed a dark green.

“What are you reading?” He asked, his voice involuntarily matching the quiet atmosphere of the room, his words coming out slightly above a whisper, the baritone of them making them heard.

Heiko cast his eyes over to Cele.

“The Rabbit of Trochta. Baptist particularly enjoyed it.”
