 “We’re both here,” I said. “All grown up.”

“Grownups don’t have to point out the fact they are.”

“I know, Dougie.”

“You think too much about age. These are for you.”

“You brought me flowers?”

“What’s a special occasion without flowers, Justice?” The slight tremor in his hand as he held them out to me came with nervousness, I knew.

“That’s nice, but…”

“But you didn’t know you were going to be my date tonight?”

“I had no idea,” I said.

“You had a little idea I’d want that.”

“I had a little idea. You do look handsome in your tux.”

“No. You’re the handsome one. I look like a doofus.”

“Who said that?” I asked. “You want me to beat them up?”
