29 The Right Decision?

Torterra, tired from his work, looked in the direction where he sensed the Kaiju. His senses were muted, and he didn't notice how Kaiju leave the portal. It wasn't until the monster approached, passing him that he could sense its presence.

Sitting down on a stone, he lowered his head dejectedly. "Cursed caterpillar!" His decision to save the caterpillar's life, while benefiting him in the future, still harmed him. He tried to limit the information the Kaiju received. But he made a fatal mistake. Annoyed by the creature's constant dragging behind him, he decided to leave it where it was, survey surroundings, then carry the caterpillar further and explore the area again. This seems to prevent the Kaiju from gathering information, but it turned out to be the opposite.

Torterra literally told the aliens that he did not feel the caterpillar well enough to leave it in the middle of the ocean and swim to the other side of the world. The first time he encountered the caterpillar was by accident, and perhaps the aliens would have rejected this invisibility technology, but now they were convinced of its effectiveness.

People will find a way to detect Kaiju, they will find the technology, but Torterra is not like that. He can't just eat a Kaiju and instantly adapt to this technology. When he eats a Kaiju, he can mutate or enhance his abilities, but he does not gain the new abilities that the Kaiju had. In general, his enhancements and development affect his pre-existing abilities with the possibility of uncontrolled mutation.

For example, after eating the first Kaiju, Torterra did not have an extra pair of arms on the sides of her stomach. He simply increased in size and his carapace became stronger and more mobile. The radiation also enhanced his physique and fire breathing ability. But the second Kaiju did not bring any new improvements, as all the energy was spent on recovering from the nuclear explosion.

Now he has no way to resist this new technology. All he can do is take on the attack of only those Kaiju passing by. This is a real fiasco.

"Maybe that's better? People have to start the fight themselves. I've already done a lot by preventing the destruction of society at the beginning of the invasion. They have a better start than in the movie." Humans had a very hard time at the beginning of history when they didn't have the technology to fight the Kaiju. Later, the first Jaegers appeared, and they could resist, but not very effectively due to the imperfection of the technology. However, when humans came up with dual drift, where two people merge their minds into one and control a robot, they handled the Kaiju pretty easily. People even started relaxing and creating entertainment with Kaiju. However, such an easy life continued until monsters with a height of 100 meters began to appear more and more often from the portal. Then the decline began.

But now humans should have dual drift technology soon, and the need to protect thay by Torterra will be gone for a while. Therefore, losing the ability to sense Kaiju at long distances shouldn't be a major problem. Even if he misses a few attacks, it won't be that bad. However, he will need to find a new source of information in the future, maybe even cooperate with people.

"Should I follow this Kaiju? I wouldn't mind checking out the training results." He did not immediately swim to the Kaiju, but went to check if the caterpillar was fixed well enough with the stones. To be sure, he knocked him out and swam in the direction of South America, where the new Kaiju was sailing.

As he sailed, he had various doubts. Do i need to intervene? Should the Kaiju be taken if he is killed by the Jaegers? People tried to kill him and he had to make a lot of efforts to survive. The desire for revenge, in fact, did not disappear. First they took his food and then they blew him up with a nuclear bomb. Such things, to put it mildly, repel from the desire to help people.

He might tell himself that he wasn't fighting for people and that it was just beneficial for him to be on good terms with people, but in reality he knew that he just couldn't stand by. And this is not some hero complex or something else. It was the behavior of a healthy person, and everyone should do it, it is right. So what should he do now? Speed up to catch up with the Kaiju and fight him in the water? Or let people fight themselves and, regardless of losses, this will allow them to develop faster and better prepare for future battles?

He chose both options. He sped up to catch up with the Kaiju, but only to catch him near the shores of the continent. That way, he could watch the Kaiju battle with the Jaeger and intervene if needed.

Constant hard work has greatly improved his strength. His arms were heavy and strong, and his shoulders jutted out from under his armor. His carapace hadn't actually fully recovered from the damage from the nuke. This is not surprising, his old carapace was completely torn from his body after the explosion. Instead of the old carapace, his body had many smaller plates. They were strong, but not as beautiful as before.

As he swam, the water seemed to scream in pain, flying everywhere, and the waves just ran away from him, trying not to stand in his way. It took Torterra less than a day to swim to shore. This may be a lot, but if you consider that the ships cover the same route in about a week, then it is not bad.

In front of him was a very beautiful coast. It looked like a tall rock that was 150 meters high, and on the rock stretched a beautiful city with white houses. Unfortunately, it was a bad time for the tour. It was night and it was difficult to see anything, but this rock was damaged in one place, as if something was climbing up it. The city was not visible from below, but there were signs of destruction. In some places, the lights were still on in the houses, and in some it was completely dark. Houses were burning and smoking. Several buildings were destroyed and their debris lay on the coastal highway at the bottom of the cliff.

"I hope people managed to evacuate in time." Torterra watched the destruction with a heavy heart. He slowly walked ashore and climbed to the top of the beach, the same way as the Kaiju.

When he got to the top, he heard the sounds of explosions and buildings collapsing. "Phew! Someone is fighting him, so Jaeger made it." Torterra was in no rush to help Jaeger, he just wanted to see how he was doing. Having walked a little further into the city, he noticed the scene of a fight in the distance.

The Kaiju was not very tall, about 80 meters. He had four blue eyes, and his body proportions somehow resembled a human. His appearance was terrible. A small mouth filled with small teeth, arms and legs with claws, and behind instead of a tail was something strange and ugly. On his head was a high bony forelock in the style of Elvis Presley, but many times exaggerated in size.

Two Jaegers of the first series fought against him. The fight was tough for both the Jaegers and the Kaiju. The first Jaegers were clumsy and stiff in their movements, a single pilot could not control such a thing well. The Jaegers were 70 meters tall and had some kind of spheres on their shoulders, the functions of which Torterra still couldn't guess.

The Kaiju pushed one of the Jaegers, who no longer had an arm, onto the building, and it fell on top of him, crushing him to the ground with its debris. Turning around, the Kaiju crouched down, dodging a direct blow from the Jaeger's hand, which held a long knife. Crouching down, he wasted no time in grabbing Jaeger's legs, pulling them onto him, pinning Jaeger to the ground. The heavy metal robot slowly fell to the ground, causing a heavy impact. As the robot fell, it tried to hold on to the building, but it simply crumbled to pieces upon contact with its hand.

The Kaiju was on top of the Jaeger and sank its claws into the hull, tearing it apart. Sparks and micro explosions rang out as the Kaiju tear at the Jaeger. At that moment, another Jaeger, with one hand, rose to his feet and, approaching Kaiju from behind, stuck a knife in his back.

SCREEEEEEEE

The Kaiju screamed in pain, he stood up sharply and knocked the Jaeger's hand away. The Kaiju jumped up and slammed his bone plate on his head into the Jaeger's chest. From the shock wave, the windows all around crumbled, and the house, which was already damaged, began to fall, covering the legs of the opponents with debris. Jaeger took steps back to keep from falling, trying to stabilize himself.

The Kaiju didn't stop and walked towards him, wanting to tear his stomach apart with his claws. Stepping forward, he scattered debris with his feet and trampled cars. The asphalt cracked under the weight, and water from the pipelines poured into the street. He was already within striking distance. The Jaeger finally stopped with his back against another building, he didn't have time to react to the ugly monster's attack, but at the last moment the monster stopped. That Jaeger, whose chest was ripped open, somehow wrapped his arms around Kaiju's waist. The Jaeger was damaged, so he just crawled. For some reason, his legs failed, or the pilot no longer had the strength to control the entire robot.

Holding the Kaiju, the Jaeger thus limited his movements, chaining him to one place with his weight. The Kaiju struggled to unhook the hands that were locked in a tight lock on his stomach. The Kaiju clawed at his arms, he had a little more left and he would be free, but it was a two against one fight. Jaeger stood in front of them with one arm, he had already stabilized his body and made a strike.

Knife in hand, he slashed at the Kaiju's head. There was another loud cry of pain. The monster turned its head sharply, breaking the knife in the process. The blade itself stuck in his cheek. He wanted to lunge at Jaeger, who did it to him, but he couldn't because he didn't have time to break free from the hug. The Kaiju waved his arms in front of him to get the Jaeger, he was able to scratch the body and reveal the robot's internals.

The Jaeger took a step back at first, but then turned and slammed his one-armed fist into the Kaiju's face. His knife was broken, so all he could do was punch, and he punched. The force of the blow was not small. The pilot invested all his willpower in these strikes. When it collided with the face, there were loud shock waves that echoed through the city like a bell. This sound was heard periodically and became louder and louder, announcing the beginning of the end of the battle.

The Kaiju was restrained and unable to escape and regroup. He received heavy blows to the face that stunned him. Little by little, the Kaiju fell to the ground, writhing from the blows. He was breathing heavily and was almost unconscious. Jaeger continued to hit, but eventually began to slow down. His blows were getting weaker and weaker, and eventually the robot stopped. He stood over the already lying Kaiju motionless. He had no hand, and there were deep cuts all over his body. The battlefield fell silent.

The monster was lying on the ground in the arms of another Jaeger and breathing heavily. He was still alive, but his face was completely smashed into blue paste.

Torterra slowly approached the scene of the battle. Kaiju and Jaeger were lying on the ground, covered in blue blood and various debris. Another Jaeger stood above them a motionless, damaged and with one-arm. It was a difficult battle for the people. They barely managed to win. And it was very smart of them to pit the Kaiju against two Jaegers.

Walking over to the standing Jaeger, Torterra patted him lightly on the back. "Well done! You did it, you protected this city", he thought and let out a small growl. But there was no answer. Jaeger just stood there. He didn't make a sound or wave a hand to say hello. After some time, Torterra realized that there was no one else in the middle of the Jaeger, the pilot was dead. The pilots of both Jaegers died.

The realization that he was watching people fight and sacrifice their lives in the process made Torterra very sick. His stomach twisted and a lump stuck in his throat. He could have stepped in and helped, but instead he just stood there and watched like an asshole.

Torterra walked away from the dead Jaegers with heavy emotions. He needed to calm down. Lowering his head to the ground, he did not feel better. The bodies of people killed by debris lay on the ground. The whole city was badly affected. If he had intercepted the Kaiju while still in the ocean, he would have dealt with him quickly.

This Kaiju wasn't very powerful. He still didn't understand why the first Kaiju was so strong, but now Kaiju 50-80 meters tall are coming out of the breach. They are 1-2 categories. And this one, similar to category 2, was not much stronger than a caterpillar.
