11 Chapter11: What now?

"Finally, over."

He was relieved that it was over, and he could finally look at the sky and acknowledge that he had taken his revenge and let his family rest in peace.

Though he was delighted that it was finally over, something seemed wrong. He had been so hell-bent on taking revenge that now, since it was over, he felt lost.

"Well at least, let's get cleaned up."

Now that everyone in this building was dead, he could basically live here and use this place as his base. But he had no plans to do so as, for Dom, this place held too many bad memories attached to it. It was just for the time being until he found a new goal.

Dom cleaned up the building and stashed all the bodies in the meeting room which was already so messed up that it was beyond repair. He shut the door to that room permanently and decide to go have a bath. After living here for three years, he knew exactly where everything was, which included the safe where they kept all the money.

Dom was extremely rich; he had all the assets of the mafia. Of course, this wasn't the whole mafia as they had other branches, but as a stronghold for their men, a lot of things were kept here. It wasn't just money either, Dom owned many things: Land, a helicopter, an auction house, and the many precious items that were kept in the building or in its vicinity.

His favourite was the collection of premium watches that one of the members had collected. The black and gold diamond encrusted watch was, quite simply, out of this world and since all of this now belonged to him, Dom was not shy at all.

After cleaning himself up and getting dressed up shabbily in a shirt and pants that he had found on a shelf, he sat of the sofa and decided to check the TV for any news that might intrigue him. This was the most relaxed he had been in years and though he was anxious about the police coming and finding out about what had conspired here, when had they ever done anything to the mafia. Of course, soon he found out that they were actually too busy to care as gates had started to open up everywhere and chaos was rampant.

"Mhhh, these gates seem quite interesting."

"Hopefully I could get stronger by going into them."

Since players existed now, many would expect that this would not be so much of a problem but how could the government just hand over so much power to random people. To remedy this, the government is trying to actively recruit players to clear the gates but which player, who had just received immense powers, would want to be a dog for the government.

After realising what was going on, they tried to use blackmail and force to get the players to join them, but this severely backfired. The Players started to resist and naturally banded together with players in a similar situation, and this turned out to be too much for the government to handle.

"It's only been a day, but the world has already gone to shit."

"But it does seem like a lot of fun."

Finally, it was time to get around to the most important thing, which was naturally to figure out more information of the circumstances of his family's plight on that fateful night.

This was quite unfamiliar territory for Dom as information as important as this would've been kept securely hidden away. With him not having any ideas as to where to start looking from, he picked one end of the building and started to turn the place upside down.

It wasn't that difficult at all to find some clues using his tracking skill. Tracking, which showed the footprints of an individual on the floor was extremely helpful as Dom was able to spot places that the members of the mafia would've gone to hide things that Dom would never think about.

"Why the hell does the footprints stop at a dead end?"

Dom while scratching his head voiced his confusion out loud, since there was no one there to hear it anyways.

"Let's see where this leads to."

Using only a little bit of his strength to try not to break the building down, He slightly pushed on the wall, which unsurprisingly crumbled, revealing a secret compartment.

"This doesn't look suspicious at all."

Dominic whispered sarcastically, knowing that what ever he was looking for would be inside this room. The secrets room was unbelievably clean and without even a speck of dust, suggesting that it was used regularly. The documents that were also strewn across the table indicated that whoever used this room was doing some important work before they unfortunately perished at Dom's hands.

After scanning though the documents on the table and not finding what he was looking for, he started to closely examine the drawers in the wooden table. Contrastingly to his expectations, there was however, no luck.

"It has to be here!"

Dom was starting to get a bit impatient, but he kept at it, rummaging through as many documents and files as he could.

And there it was, buried under many other files and documents, something related to his family. To be more specific, it was titled by the name of his one and only father, Dietrich Dmitry. After taking it out of the drawer, he placed it only the table and swiped the rest of the files away on to the floor. None of that matters at all to Dom, just this, he wanted to know why. He believed that he deserved the truth after all he had been through.

With almost a shaking hand, he flipped open the cardboard file cover to reveal the documents inside. It had everything, from where his father was born, to where he studied and even everything above his family. As he read further, he was veering closer and closer to the truth.

Finally, there was a section, which at glance seemed useless, but was in matter of fact a notice out for his father's murder. The reason you ask. Well for that first you would need to know Dietrich's occupation, which was that of a journalist for a news broadcasting company.

Not the most glamorous job but it payed well enough and was not as gruelling as some other jobs he could've been doing. But things started to go downhill when the new prime minister took over and reshuffled the standing of the country of Russia. Whatever they were doing, it was a complete secret from the public and the rest of the world, but it was clear that a lot of money was being invested into something.

It's almost impossible to keep everything hidden, specially from your own citizens that live and breath in the same country. And for Dietrich, curiosity really did kill the cat, or in his case, himself and his family.

There was much information on the document but to summarise it, he had managed to find something that many people in powerful places had wanted to keep hidden at any cost. For insurance, his family ended up being targeted in case they had any information that Dietrich had passed on. Naturally, the secrets he had discovered were not mentioned in the document as the mafia were simply instructed to kill him and they didn't need to know the details either. Just compensated generously for completing the deed.

This was however not a dead end. There was one name, a name that clearly belonged to the person that had commissioned the death of Dmitry's father and his family. Alexey Ivanov…

Long story short, this man is in the cabinet of the Russian federal government and naturally held a lot of power. Being close to prime minister and the president, Alexey was a man that could achieve any objective, even if he had to break the law to do so.

Whatever it was that his father had discovered, Dom had no way of knowing at this point, but it was clearly very important. By doing some further research, Dominic also managed to gleam some more details as to what had occurred afterwards. The bodies of his parents and younger brother were discovered almost a week later after their deaths when a nearby resident realised that there had been no movement in the house for quite a few days. It seemed like it was a massive case due to the severity of the incident, but it seemed to be quickly brushed aside and any subsequent attempts to find the assumed kidnapped child, Dominic Dmitry, was minimal to say the least. It was very clear that the government was trying to keep the incident from blowing up and attracting too much attention.

After that, even the news broadcasting company that Dietrich used to work for was shut down and any subsequent cases against the government were swept under the rug. Seeing all this, Dom was furious, and it was hard to hold back the urge to use his powers to run to the Kremlin, in Moscow, and rid the world of all of these bastards.

Though Dom's desire to do so was extremely potent, the unknown factors of the current government's power allowed him to make a rational decision. Even if the government had failed to recruit many awakened, this doesn't mean that they wouldn't have a lot of them on their side anyways.

After calming himself down and deciding that he still needed to get stronger, Dom decide to put this problem on hold, at least for now. First, he planned on going to a gate but to do that he had to find one near him first.

Fortunately for him, this wasn't a difficult task to accomplish considering that there were enough gates to go around, and the fact that the country's forces are already spread too thinly. This was great news and so Dominic was planning on attempting to go to one, in the morning, on the very next day. He was too spent and exhausted after everything that had happened today and since humanity had yet to clear a gate, he wasn't in a rush either.

In actuality, this was the case because many countries were in the process of arranging teams to venture into the gates. Though to do this, they had to cooperate with the teams of awakeners that had already formed and would later be known as guilds.
