Gio could not hear. Elle knew that, she had been aware of it for weeks. But knowing something for a few weeks was not enough to change years of habit.
For as long as Elle had known him, Gio had been able to hear. Elle had often teased him for having dog ears, able to hear even the smallest rustle from a distance. And then in a single moment, all of that was gone.
Elle had been warned that it would be jarring, a new way of life that would take some getting used to, for both of them. But at the time, Elle had thought that the adjusting phase would be harder on Gio than on her. That because he was the one who was no longer able to hear, he would be hit hard by his new reality.
