4 4 | Bry

It's been two decades since the arrival of the humans in this land from far away.

Right now, inside a tent near the juncture of two rivers an argument is going on.

As we peer into the tent, we can see a young woman who has leather armour and bronze sword on her hip and a long bow on her back and a man who looks similar to the woman speaking.

"Bry, listen to me. You are a first generation girl in this land, so I want you to marry a strong adventurer, not dress up like one." The man told the young woman in front of him.

Hearing what the man said, the young woman Bry scowled, then looking at him she said "Father, for you to get into the good graces of others, don't sell me."

The man who heard this frowned and said "Bry, I'm not selling you. You have to understand that I'm old. And I may die within a few years, after that you will be alone in this land."

"The land I knew all my life." Bry said.

"Yes. But you know it too, that this land is not safe. There are giants, children of the forest and many wild animals that could just straight up kill us, not to mention the men who have been eyeing you with predatory eyes. So is it a sin if a father wished for his only daughter's safety." The father asked Bry.

Hearing that, Bry just sighed and said "Father, we both know that I'm more than capable of fighting and defeating those men. As for the giants and the children? If we don't provoke them and don't cut down the trees with faces, they won't attack us. So you don't have to worry about it, okay?"

Her father just sighed and nodded at her. Getting a good response from her father she smiled and said "Alright, now I will go towards that lake and get some fish and boar."

Saying that she hugged him and walked out of their tent and went in the direction of one of the rivers that joins at their spot.

As she was walking along the bank of the river she heard the chirping of the birds from the trees, splashing of water from the river and the sounds of wildlife all around her. Hearing all that she just smiled and enjoyed her walk along the river bank.

A couple of hours of walking later she reached a large lake with a small island in the centre of it. She didn't venture towards the island, instead she decided to circle around the lake for fun. Halfway through her walk, she saw a woolly mammoth grazing the grass and a man sleeping in the shadow of the mammoth. When she saw the mammoth, the first thing she thought was to hunt it for its meat, its tusk and its wool, as they were the three items that are most valuable. But seeing a man, who is seemingly relaxing near a mammoth changes her mind as she always wanted to ride in on the behemoth.

As her curiosity started to flare up to know what kind of man owned a mammoth she walked towards him. From the distance he looked like any other man would look like to Bry, but as she got closer she noticed that the man is almost nine feet tall and he has strong legs. Just with that observation she concluded that it's a giant and not a human. So her guard went up, since she is the daughter of one of the invaders who came to this land that was only inhabited by the children and the giants. As she was slowly backing away to where she came from, she stepped on a twig and it broke. That attracted both the mammoth and the giant man, both of them turned towards her and she cursed her luck that brought her into this situation.

Seeing that both the mammoth and the giant were looking at her intently, she awkwardly smiled and said "Sorry to disturb you." And she hoped that the giant will just shoo her away as they don't speak their tongue.

But to her utter surprise the giant man spoke "What... are you... doing... here?" (AN::- old tongue used by first men)

Hearing that question she didn't reply, she just stood there with her mouth agape and wondered 'Did that giant speak in our language?'

"I did." The giant spoke.

Hearing that her eyes went wide and she thought 'Can he read my mind?'

"No." The giant spoke again, and this time she didn't even try to think about something fearing that the giant would read her mind again.

The giant smiled at her and said "It's..... easy... to..... read.... your.... face."

Hearing that she just sighed and looked at the giant contemplating on what to speak. But she was beaten to it by the giant as he said with a smile "I'm Hugh."

Understanding that it's his name and he's just trying to introduce himself to her, she replied "Bry."

Nodding at her Hugh asked "What are you doing here?"

"Hunting." She replied.

"Food?" Hugh asked.

"Yes, for food." Bry told him.

Hearing her answer he slowly stood up from his sleeping position and went towards the mammoth and took a makeshift pouch. Putting his hand inside he searched for a couple of seconds and took out a roasted wild bird and offered it to her by saying "For you."

Seeing the roasted bird, her wariness of the giant named Hugh went out of her mind as she jumped onto him and took the roasted bird from him and smelled it then took a bite from it.

As the juicy meat was chewed by her crushing sound was heard from her mouth due to the crispy skin of the bird. After swallowing the meat, she slumped down and sat there for a minute looking at the roasted bird in her hand, and Hugh just stood there without saying anything.

Then looking at Hugh she bowed her head and said "Thank you."

Hearing that, Hugh just smiled and nodded at her and said "It's getting late." Saying that he turned to his mammoth and said "It's time to go Manny."

In response Manny lifted his trunk and roared in agreement, with his agreement Hugh mounted him and then looking at the gobsmacked Bry he said "Next time friend."

Bry just nodded at him dumbly, and Hugh rode away from there within a second.

Seeing him go like that, Bry asked to no one in particular "What the hell just happened?"
