9 Chapter 9

The place is alluring and quaint. It’s a log cabin. Its one main room is comprised of a living room with a sofa bed, a kitchen area, and a two-person table. A bathroom with the smallest shower and sink I’ve ever seen sits to the right of the main room.

“I have to start a fire,” Joey says. “The temperature’s going down to thirty tonight. We might wake up to snow in the morning. Want to help me fetch some wood?”

“Sure,” I say, nod, and keep bundled up in my jacket, gloves, and boots.

After our adventures in the surrounding woods with a flashlight—and after we collect some logs from the nearby woodpile—we head back into the cabin.

Joey spends the next fifteen minutes building a fire.

I decide to whip up some dinner, which consists of hot dogs boiled on the electric stove and a can of baked beans. I set the two-person table and light a candle for the romantic ambiance.
