"How did you know I received a message?" Daerin stared at her with a bit of suspension in his eyes.

Graceilla's eyes widened. She opened her mouth like she was about to say anything, but hesitated. But no, the truth is she didn't know what to say. She did have a backup reason from Daerin's question that could be her escape hole. She was trapped.
