Chapter 1Chapter 1: Abyss Invasion, Awaken Data Panel

Xia Country, Coastal City.

Ding ding ding…

Lu Heng's body jolted as he woke from his slumber and looked around, only to be instantly dumbfounded.

Before his eyes were neat desks and towering stacks of textbooks—the classroom of Class 2, Grade 3 at Coastal High School.

Yet, he had clearly been struggling for the Reincarnation Source Material in an Abyss Demon Nest just a moment ago. How had he suddenly ended up here?

It took him ten minutes to sort through his thoughts, and he confirmed three things.

First, he had been reborn and returned to the night before the Abyss Descent.

Second, he possessed the memories of three years following the Abyss Descent.

Third, before his rebirth, he had been at an Abyss Demon Nest fighting for the Reincarnation Source Material when an accident caused him to fall deep into the Demon Abyss.

When he awoke again, he had been reborn three years in the past, which was now.

The current time was 9:50 PM on September 5, 2028, according to the Blue Star Calendar. The bell he had just heard was the signal for the end of the third period of evening self-study.

In 18 minutes, an impressive meteor shower from the Perseid meteor showers would streak across the night sky, marking the start of the Abyss invasion.

The meteor shower would bring about the first wave of Abyss Demons worldwide.

The first wave of Abyss Demons wouldn't be enough to plunge the Human World into disorder, but it would trigger a period of panic.

Lu Heng clearly remembered that, in his past life, after evening self-study, he had gone out for late snacks and encountered the meteor shower by the sea.

At the time, a walnut-sized irregular crystal had fallen by the seaside.

Lu Heng had picked up the crystal but didn't know what it was.

Half a month later, someone offered 500,000 to buy such crystals.

Initially, his family had bought an apartment in a school district and borrowed money from relatives to afford his education; to repay that debt, they sold the crystal.

Only half a month after did they realize the crystal was known as a Demon Crystal Core.

The Crystal Core contained Demon Energy, and humans who absorbed this energy could awaken a data panel and become a Superpower User.

Research institutions also referred to these humans as Demon Walkers.

Because he had missed that Demon Crystal Core, Lu Heng only got his chance to awaken during the second year of the Abyss invasion.

Having lost a year, even his desperate attempts couldn't catch up with those who had the advantage of starting earlier.

Now reborn, Lu Heng wouldn't let this happen again.

Having cleared his thoughts, he immediately rushed to the Coastal Beach.

By the time he arrived at the seaside, it was exactly 10:08 PM.

One meteor crossed the sky, followed by a second and third...

The number of meteors increased, gradually forming a meteor shower that illuminated the entire night sky in a spectacular display.

Couples who were on a date at the Coastal Beach cheered and took out their cell phones to snap photos.

At that moment, a speck of purple light fell into the sea—its landing spot was shallow, and a dim purple glow was faintly visible, buried in the sand.

A thug-looking blond saw the purple light and wanted to pick it up.

Lu Heng was one step ahead, quickly picking up the dark purple crystal—it was unmistakably a Demon Crystal Core.

"Hey! I saw it first," the blond tried to assert himself.

Lu Heng turned and glared at him, spitting out a cold word: "Scram!"

This blond thug, usually the type to bully the weak and fear the strong, was intimidated by Lu Heng's fierce demeanor and didn't dare utter a sound as he scurried away.

Lu Heng crushed the Demon Crystal Core, and a surge of energy flowed through his palm into his body.

The data panel appeared before his eyes:

[Name: Lu Heng]

[Species: Human]

[Level: 1]

[Qi-Blood: 90/90]

[Source Energy: 110/110]

[Attributes: Strength 9, Agility 12 (9+3), Constitution 9, Spirit 11, Perception 10]

[Talent: Agile as a Dragon, Divine Evolution]

[Skill Slot Number: 3]

[Skills: None]

[Abyss Battlefield: Recruitment Countdown 7 days]

When Superpower Users awaken, the most crucial panel data are Skill Slot Number and Initial Talent.

These two data points determine the initial potential of a Superpower User.

Lu Heng's Skill Slot Number was above average, and his Initial Talent was the rare dual talents.

The first talent.

[Agile as a Dragon: Exceptionally agile, movements as swift as a dragon, initial Agility +3; Agility increases with every level according to the level.]

This talent adds 30% more agility with each level.

As the level increases, the additional Agility Attribute also increases, making this talent stronger in the later stages.

Originally, Lu Heng's Agility Attribute was 9, but with the enhancement from [Agile as a Dragon], it had increased to 12.

Agility mainly affects nerve reaction speed, coordination, attack speed, running speed, and various other physical qualities.

In the world of martial arts, only speed is invincible.

When a superpower user engaged in a battle, within seven steps, speed was the truth, which made the Agility Attribute very important.

Lu Heng's first talent was already strong, but the real divine talent was actually the second one.

"Divine Evolution: Use Divine Energy to merge and evolve skills, breaking the skill level limits and promoting the skill into a higher form."

In his past life, although he had missed a year, he still managed to become a top superpower soldier, and this talent played a significant role.

Lu Heng glanced at the countdown timer for the summoning to the Abyss Battlefield and muttered to himself, "Being summoned the first time I open the door, time is a bit tight."

After awakening successfully, Lu Heng began to recall some important events from the early stages of the Abyss Descent.

Having been reborn, he definitely needed to secure some advanced resources in advance.

Especially for those high-level skills with unique characteristics, owning them would mean winning at the starting line.

However, the higher the resource, the more difficult it was to obtain, so it was necessary to make a good plan, starting with the easier ones.

After the meteor shower, the first batch of low-rank demons would appear around the world.

If these low-rank demons appeared in densely populated areas, they would cause chaos.

Lu Heng took out his phone and checked the school chat group.

Someone mentioned in the group that they saw moving flames in Unity Garden, looking like ghost fires, which was quite terrifying.

Lu Heng remembered this incident.

In his past life, Lu Heng had rushed to Unity Garden with a fire extinguisher only to meet a boy wearing black glasses frames.

The boy had taken the fire extinguisher and asked Lu Heng to find another one.

Thinking that extinguishing the fire was urgent, Lu Heng handed over the fire extinguisher and then turned to find a second one.

Later, the boy's fire extinguishing act was formally recognized and praised by the school.

In the commendation draft, not only was Lu Heng's name omitted, but the boy also never mentioned in the interview that someone had handed him a fire extinguisher.

Not long after, the boy was taken away by official authorities.

About half a year later, that boy became a member of the national superpower organization "Iron Blood," suddenly rising to be the strongest superpower soldier from Coastal High School.

Thinking of this, Lu Heng immediately returned to the school and ran towards Unity Garden.

Passing by the cupboard storing firefighting equipment, he casually took a fire extinguisher.

When he arrived at Unity Garden, as expected, he saw a group of moving flames.

The flames were nearly as tall as a person, with thunder and lightning encircling them, and a fierce demon face could vaguely be seen within the fire, extremely terrifying.

Just by a glance, Lu Heng recognized it as a low-rank demon—Thunder Fire Demon Spirit.

At that moment, the boy with black glasses came up and stretched out his hand asking, "Give me the fire extinguisher."

Lu Heng slapped his hand away, "Go find one yourself."

The boy glared at Lu Heng discontentedly and ran out of Unity Garden to find a fire extinguisher.

Lu Heng carried the fire extinguisher and stepped towards the Thunder Fire Demon Spirit.

The demon spirit emitted a sharp scream and pounced, spitting out flames to attack.

Lu Heng removed the safety pin of the fire extinguisher and started spraying directly.

The fire extinguisher spewed out a sky full of white dry powder, smothering the flames.

The Thunder Fire Demon Spirit angrily screamed and charged out of the dust, spraying fierce flames at Lu Heng.

Lu Heng, agile, swiftly retreated to dodge the attack and continued using the fire extinguisher to smother the flames on its body.

After the flames were extinguished, the Thunder Fire Demon Spirit's form was nothing but a black lump of coal slags.

However, its flames were only temporarily extinguished; if it wasn't completely eliminated, the flames would reignite before long.

Having emptied a canister of dry powder, Lu Heng swung the fire extinguisher viciously at it.

Bang!

The Thunder Fire Demon Spirit shattered into ash, as if burned-out coal slag.

"Hunt demons, absorb 10 points of Demon Energy."

"Demon Energy boosts energy level, Source Energy Level raised to 2, All Attributes +1, Agility Attribute additionally +0.3."

At the moment of leveling up, Lu Heng felt a surge of energy swirling within him, swiftly increasing his body's strength, his muscles filled with explosive power.

Among the shattered ashes of the Thunder Fire Demon Spirit, a glint appeared; it was a walnut-sized Demon Crystal Core.

Lu Heng picked it up to check the properties and discovered it was a "Thunder Weapon Crystal Core."

The Thunder Fire Demon Spirit had a chance to drop two types of crystal cores, "Flame Weapon Crystal Core" and "Thunder Weapon Crystal Core."

Among these, the drop rate for "Thunder Weapon Crystal Core" was much lower.

"Thunder Weapon Crystal Core: Absorb crystal core energy, chance to learn the 'Thunder Weapon' skill."

"Thunder Weapon: Releases thunder attached to the weapon, causing an additional 12 points of thunder damage when attacking with the weapon, and induces a slight paralysis effect on the attacked part. Damage value = 1 × Spirit Attribute. Skill Consumption: 3 points of Source Energy/minute. Skill Level: D."

Seeing this skill, Lu Heng didn't hesitate and immediately crushed the crystal core, absorbing the energy within.

The energy flowed through his palm into his body, condensing into an energy group in the first skill slot.

"Absorbed Thunder Weapon Crystal Core, learned skill 'Thunder Weapon'."

Lu Heng snapped his fingers, a stream of electricity surged from his fingertip, emitting a crackling sound.

"Using 'Thunder Weapon' skill, Skill Proficiency +1."

After testing the skill, Lu Heng quickly cleaned up the scene and left Unity Garden.

The previous boy returned with a fire extinguisher, only to see the extinguished embers and strange coal slag on the ground.

Before listing its pros and cons, I need to state that this story is a very average work. By my own standards, it’s a 2-star piece; by Webnovel standards, it’s a 4-star one. Then again, there’s a lot of trash that gets 5 stars here. Anyway, the story follows a regression-based premise, assuming that the world has been invaded by the Abyss. I say "assuming" because, at the start, people awaken through crystals that fall to Earth and are then forcibly summoned to the Abyss Warzone, where they begin their path to power. Rather than an invasion, it feels more like a forced mercenary duty against Abyssal creatures. The general premise suggests that the Abyss is slowly taking over the entire universe, and those who awaken are sent on these resistance missions. During one such encounter, the MC regresses to the past, and the story begins. From my perspective, this story is just an MMORPG novel—except it’s not a game. Same interface, same quest/reward system… Now, onto the pros and cons. Pros: It’s not a harem. The world-building is decent. The MC is not a complete idiot. (Don't assume he’s smart—I said he’s not an idiot, not that he’s intelligent.) The pacing is not bad. If this is a translation, the translator has done a good job. Cons: Yes, the MC is not an idiot, but he’s not smart either. The author tries to portray him as analytical and intelligent. The MC never carefully observes anyone, and the author doesn’t bother describing much, yet suddenly, he notices someone is left-handed. Then, in the next chapter, he sees that the same person is using their right hand and goes, "Aha! You’re fake because you used your right hand!" Come on, are you serious? The very first time he decides to analyze someone in detail, and it immediately pays off? If this were a one-time thing, I wouldn't care—I’ve read a lot of novels and have mastered the ability to overlook incredibly dumb stuff. But things like this happen repeatedly across 150 chapters, and it becomes glaringly obvious. This issue leads to the next major problem. The plot progression feels extremely forced—it never feels natural. For the same reason as above. The MC gains an enemy, fights them, but there’s no resolution. Then, in the next Abyss Warzone, surprise! That enemy is there again. The cliché plays out: the enemy causes a lot of trouble for the MC, but in the end, the MC manages to kill them. And this doesn’t happen just once—it happens repeatedly. No matter who the MC meets, if they become an enemy, they are guaranteed to appear in the next Abyss Warzone. Despite the fact that the summon process is supposedly random… Why even add the regression element to this story? Never mind, I won’t bore you with details, but this is one of those MCs who gains absolutely no real advantage from returning to the past. He has to struggle for everything. He meets side characters and keeps thinking, "Oh, this guy was insignificant in the past, but strong, and he was a master, blah blah…" So far, the only things he has used his future knowledge for are upgrading a weapon, farming for a level or two, and nothing else. His knowledge of the future has been completely useless except for serving as an Abyss Warzone guide. The MC isn’t overpowered—which is fine. I have no problem with that if it’s well-written. But this isn’t even a proper weak-to-strong story. The MC looks like he’s struggling because of the poor execution of the narrative, but he’s actually not. Swords clash, skills fly, and then the MC finally stabs his opponent. That’s the whole battle. The fights are not any more exciting than those few sentences. He has regressed, but if he’s not the best, that’s understandable. But it feels like he has to struggle even to get a glass of water. Maybe it’s a combination of the previous issues, or maybe it’s just the writing style, but this story is incredibly boring. I never wonder what’s going to happen next or what anyone is going to do. The only thing I ever cared about was what the MC would earn after battles. And when I finally saw the rewards, my reaction was, "Meh, not worth the curiosity." If you’ve read similar stories, this one is painfully dull. But if you haven’t read many novels yet, you might enjoy it—it won’t feel that bad. It’s full of clichés and a fair amount of nonsense. This isn’t a general critique but an example of how badly the story fumbles in certain moments. At the start, the MC goes to save a girl who will later become his teammate. Spoiler: These are high school kids. The girl is dragged to a secluded place by bullies. (According to future knowledge, she was assaulted and then crippled herself by jumping from a height to escape. Don’t ask me how she continued to fight in Abyss Wars while being crippled—I have no idea.) The MC goes to save her and… tada! He immediately draws his sword and starts chopping heads off. If I were a high school girl and someone rescued me by beheading people in front of me, I wouldn’t be grateful—I would be 100% convinced that he’s just another psychopath. Seriously, Chinese authors are not normal. Their imagination is completely unhinged… Speaking of Chinese authors, yes, the usual racism is here too. here is no need for details, because you will see the Japanese there. Other topic is women. The girl he saves literally tells him, "I will do whatever you say," and she actually does that for the entire story. "I will go where you say, learn the skill you choose, stand when you say stand, sit when you say sit." Someone in the comments said, "MC and FL also has a really good chemistry, with the FL not feeling like a background character but an actual FL that has role in the action and story." Wake up! This is not an chemistry. This is a slave! Even in harem novels, women have more autonomy than this. The FL in this story has the same level of free will as a fork or a spoon. Note: If my comment has any unclear or incorrect parts, I apologize because English is my 67th language.
