"Oh shit," Sean didn't understand what had happened, but his body ached as if a road roller crossed him several times. It was dark in his eyes, his head was buzzing. "Ash, why is it so hot? Did you turn off the air conditioner?" The guy dug his fingers into the hot sand and tried to get up. Wait. The sand?

Sean opened his eyes. Is this some kind of joke? His blurry vision confirmed that he was lying in the sand, very hot sand, like the one on some Hawaiian beach, warmed by the sun. Where does this beach come from in a science laboratory in the center of a megalopolis?!

The man got up, rubbed his eyes and froze with his mouth open. "What the fuck...," a curse flashed from his lips as the roar of the surrounding crowd stunned him the next instant.

Sand, the scorching midday sun, stone walls, and about a thousand people in strange clothes, chanting something incomprehensible in unison.

This picture vaguely resembled a scene from a movie about gladiators.

"What's happening?" Sean looked around in complete bewilderment, in one of the amphitheater's lodges the sun glided over the golden hair of a girl.

"Ashley!" The girl, hearing a man scream from the arena, rose from her seat and raised her hand. The crowd fell silent.

"Ash, is this your new project? Somehow it's way too realistic even for virtual reality. Can you-"

"How dare you look at the emperor's daughter, a miserable slave!" The overweight man in steel armor barked at Sean, and the next moment the guy tasted the sand in his mouth. That was too realistic.

"Damn NPC [1], take your hands off me! I am her boyfriend!"

A slight chuckle flew off the girl's lips, "NPC, boyfriend? What odd words you are saying, stranger."

Sean looked at Ashley with a look full of shock. Is this some kind of role-playing game? Can someone explain the rules first?

But before he could voice his question, the girl gave the order, "Kill him!"
