212 Inevitable Crash (4)

The evening was as bad as Kyro had promised. Lucy kept on trying to walk, and failing. When it was time to eat, he barely ate a couple bites of the specially prepared mash, but even that was soon vomited out.

Once the painkillers wore off, he started meowing in loud, heart-rending tones. When Iris tried to feed him a tablet, Lucy didn't even look its way. He just kept on meowing and looking at her with pleading eyes.

In the end, they managed to trick him by hiding the tablet in a miniature piece of chicken. He wasn't supposed to eat something like that for now, but he wasn't going to swallow the medicine any other way.

For a time after that, Lucy was calm, sleeping fitfully. But during the night, he woke up. It was hard to say whether it was pain or something else, but he crawled to the bedroom door and began meowing in a sorrowful voice.

Kyro then had to get up and pick him up, but Lucy didn't want to stay in his arms. A few seconds later, he began struggling, trying to escape. "What is it?" Kyro asked, but the cat had no answer.

In the end, Kyro just carried him back to his nest. Lucy sniffed a few times and changed position, but didn't move more.

This was around midnight, and everyone went to sleep after that. But at four o'clock, Lucy was meowing again. This time it seemed that the painkillers had worn off. With a touch of annoyance, Iris got up and fought a battle with him to feed him another tablet.

Twenty minutes passed till she managed to do it.

When Kyro's alarm rang before seven o'clock, Iris was ready to murder someone. She had barely closed her eyes for a moment, and here she had to get up again.

The alarm rang and rang, until she could take it no more. Turning it off, she woke Kyro up. As always, he wasn't too appreciative about being woken up, but he didn't complain. It wasn't her who had a job to go to.

Noticing her reluctance to get up, he pulled the covers back over her. "Just sleep. I can leave on my own."

"Mhm…" That sounded too tempting to refuse. The moment Iris closed her eyes, she was already halfway to the world of dreams.

Kyro took a shower and made himself some coffee before leaving. On his way out, he took a glance at Lucy. The cat lay motionless at the moment. He looked asleep if not for an open eye that followed Kyro's every move.

"You're gonna get better, old man, don't worry." Kyro bent down to caress his head, then left the house. This place was a little farther away from his job, so he had to leave earlier.

When he came to his office, Lara was already waiting for him, her expression grim. "There's been a few more who have withdrawn," she said while passing him the documents.

After a quick glance, Kyro calmed himself that all of these were small fish. But then, the big fish were taking their time to leave. Once they saw all the small-time investors jump ship, they would start moving as well.

While he pondered over that, Jimmy entered his office. "I've got news."

"Go ahead."

Jimmy seemed uncomfortable for some reason. He didn't sit down, standing behind the chair while leaning on its backrest. "The police finally got the story out of Gregor, and I can put him behind bars for at least three years. More if his backers don't interfere."

This was some good news, but Jimmy's actions betrayed that there was more to it. Was it in the reasoning behind Gregor's actions?

"Why did he do it?"

"He wanted something on you. Since college, he had been burning with hatred for you, and now that your station is no longer stable for the first time in forever, he wanted to be the one to kick you off your high horse, as he put it."

"And he thought he'd get this kind of info at my place?" Kyro was incredulous. It wasn't like Gregor had been the smartest in college, but he hadn't been a total tool. Well, not a hundred percent one.

"Someone told him about you bringing secret information home to work on it without anyone seeing you. He also learned that you were going to be away for the weekend, so he thought it was gonna be easy peasy."

Jimmy was starting to get into the story, but his queasiness didn't pass. He was still shuffling about, doing his best to act nonchalant when he was clearly not feeling that way. But so far, he hadn't said anything that might result in such emotions.

"And?"

"Well, the police didn't manage to get anything else, but there's a definite motive and illegal entry, so he only made my job easier. The fact that he injured your pet isn't going to help his case, either. The fool thinks he'd still gonna go free, though."

When he didn't say anything else, Kyro finally pulled back from the desk and focused his full attention on him. "Spill it. What else is there?"

The expression on Jimmy's face went through a couple iterations before settling on uncertainty. "I don't know if you really want to know it…"

"Tell me."

"Well… Jane's back. And she has dumped Brons' brother. I think Gregor might have done it to impress her by putting you down upon her return," Jimmy explained in a controlled voice, but Kyro stopped hearing him after the first few words.

His mind whirled in disbelief and confusion. Jane was back?
