Protagonist:

Scarlett is an 18 year old girl who desperately wants to become part of the Karainas, the warriors who fight against the Hova. She's smart and strong, but lacks the confidence to do things on her own. She's afraid of getting left behind and of "not mattering."

At first, she's enamored with the idea of becoming a great fighter for the good of mankind. When she starts to learn that the Hova had reasons to attack the humans a long, long time ago, her motivations change. Then she learns a secret from her past that changes everything for her.

Antagonists: The Hova are a race of vampire like people who live off blood. While they do not need to drink human blood, the nobles among their courts prefer it to animal blood. They send occasional raiding parties to hunt humans and take them back to their kingdom as slaves.

Character progression: Scarlett starts out as a follower, but then realizes she has to take matters into her own hands. She has to learn how to fight on several fronts, especially the political front where she maneuvers her way into a Hova court to spy on them.

In the Hovian court, Scarlett lives a life completely different from her own. She must go to parties, entertain the high noble ladies, and basically lead a double life. With help from the prince, she slowly forms a plan to try to take down the Hovian king from within his court. She is introduced to other Hova that sympathize with their cause.
