35 Night Watch

(Morgan Pov)

I have to go on night watch today, I still have some pretty mixed feelings about this job. On one hand, I like sleeping. I always have been a workaholic, but that doesn't mean I hate resting. I need to keep such a strict mindset, there is a high chance I will just stop doing things altogether.

I'm not even exaggerating, there was a point in my life where I seriously considered living the minimalist life. I wanted to live off of what I earned up until that point and quit doing all of my social obligations. I was ready to live and to die like a human amoeba.

The people who loved me most said I was better than that, but I personally did not agree with that. I was also promoted to a high position around that time, which meant I had to devote more time to my job. Those two factors prevented me from achieving my true final form.

That's beside the point, what I am trying to say is being the person on night watch is exhausting. But there is one thing I like about it. The nighttime is when my magic is at its most powerful, my dark magic and anima magic both receive a significant boost.

After touching upon the origin of magic, I received the ability to channel the magic of the world into my body. When I do this I get a couple of neat abilities, but the most relevant of those abilities is night vision. Technically the ability is enhanced vision, but I mainly use it at night time.

Night watch is a trivial task when you can see everything as it was in broad daylight. But there is a slight downside to this ability. While I am channeling the world's magic into me, it's very hard to tell when nighttime begins or ends.

It's a very strange situation, I don't notice when the daytime begins because the magic forces everything to look clear to me. When the sun rises and illuminates the world, the magic will adjust itself to give me the best vision possible.

My sight stays like this until I deactivate the spell, there are times where I go days without rest. Everything looks the same and I have a bad habit of getting tunnel vision at times, so it's easy for me to get carried away. However, there are a couple of downsides to using this power.

One of the downsides to channeling magic from the environment into my body is the extreme physical toll it takes on my body. It takes a long time for my body to recover from that exertion. The amount of magic necessary to cast spells is much higher during that time frame.

The rest period depends on how long or how much magic I channel. If I exceed my limits then I can't cast magic. I technically can still cast magic, but if I want to recover as soon as possible I need to rest. Not using any magic usually cuts recovery time by more than half, which is helpful.

I finished up what I had to do today and I don't want to do any extra training. I think I am going to take a nap. I think 3 hours should be fine for a nap. I hope no one wakes me up, I will definitely go full agro on whoever does wake me up.

(Hassar Pov)

I am glad Morgan took a nap, it's annoying having to deal with him when he is tired. He would constantly be muttering complaints under his breath. He also knows I can hear him perfectly when he says these things. So he's doing it just for the sake of being annoying.

I can't be too angry with him because he is very reliable when he is well-rested. While he is on watch he is solely dedicated to doing this task, it is very hard to get his attention. He is on constant alert, and he is very active in taking out potential threats.

"I see 10 wolves approaching, I am taking them out when they get closer."

"Let me know if you miss it."

I hear the sound of 6 arrows quickly being shot. I remember when it would take him an entire day to hit a target just once, he has come a long way since then. As I am hearing the arrows fly through the air, I see Morgan turn to me and begin to talk to me.

"I got them all."

One by one I can hear the sound of 10 targets being hit, but he called that out before I could even hear all of them slowly dying. His senses are almost as sharp as mine, considering how young he is I know he has so much more room to improve.

He can use his senses to gather all sorts of information, he can use that information to make predictions and then plan ahead. But there are times he can't respond at all to the information he gathered. I can tell by the way he moves that his body can't keep up with his senses.

My senses were honed over the years, it was a slow and barely noticeable process. My body was also growing alongside my senses, so I never had the problem Morgan has. Normally you can't train your senses to go reach a level your body can handle.

Then again it's Morgan I'm talking about, a lot of what he is and does isn't exactly normal. What did he do to improve his senses in such a short amount of time? Not only that, how did he manage to break through the limits of his body? Why did he have to break those limits?

You can't train yourself to see in the dark, so I know at the very least magic is involved. It would be easier to just ask him what he did. Sacaens are known for never telling lies and always keeping their word. Morgan for the most part is also like that, but that's only if he likes you.

Morgan doesn't lie to you, the problem is he just doesn't tell you anything or he doesn't tell you everything. He rarely goes out of his way to tell you things, which means you have to keep asking him questions. Most of the time he answers the questions truthfully and sincerely.

"This has been bothering me for some time now, Morgan I need to know how you trained your senses. I have been trying to come up with ways to help you, but I need to know more before I can help you."

"Tch, I thought I was hiding it well. That doesn't matter anymore, fine I'll tell you what you want to know. I can't come up with an answer on my own, I need all the help I can get. How did you know I was having a problem with my senses?"

"Morgan, I have fought people with senses just as good as mine or better. Battles are decided in an instant, I would be dead if I did not know what my opponent can or can't do. I rely on speed to win, the first thing I do in any battle is to learn how my opponent responds to my actions.

I've fought people who could see me move at my fastest speed, some that could hear me move, and some that could simply feel my presence approaching them. I even fought a person who could detect my movements by following my scent.

Over time I just started to look at the way everyone moves, I started to notice certain patterns. Every person has a sense they rely on most, it's usually sight and hearing. Morgan your reactions are the most interesting, and you don't seem to rely on one sense most.

There are times where you respond either late or early, and there are even times where you don't respond at all. But I noticed you are never surprised at what is happening. You always seem to know or have an idea of what will happen.

When I noticed that, everything started to make more sense. I started to pay more attention to you, after watching you for some time I found a problem."

"That sounds so cool, I wish I could do that. This is also the most I have heard you talk and you haven't even asked your questions yet."

"I only talked this much because I know you would have kept asking me questions until you're happy. If I tell you everything now, then we can get to what I want to talk about."

"That's fair. Alright, I'll tell you what you want to know."

"This has always been bothering me for a long time. Since the time I brought you to the tribe, you have always been training. Seeing how far you have pushed yourself is concerning, it's like you are preparing for something you know will happen.

You don't have much combat experience, but your spearmanship alone is remarkable considering your age. I find it comparable to some of the elite knights I've fought with or against in the past. Then there is your magic, I have no idea what you can do with it.

There are so many things you can do and I'm not even sure of what other things you can do. I only know as much as you are willing to show me. If I look at you as an opponent, you are very irritating. There are too many things to keep track of and you don't have an obvious weakness.

You did this on purpose, but I can't think of a reason why you had to do this. Why did you feel the need to push yourself to a level your body can't handle?

What exactly did you do to yourself to get that point? Why did you have to do all of this in a short amount of time? What do you know?"

"Not going to lie, I was expecting to talk about this at some point. I also had the feeling it would be with you. I have been waiting to get most of this off of my chest. I will tell you as much as I can and I hope you are happy with the responses you get."

He wants to talk and isn't on guard, this is very good for me. When Morgan is on guard, it's nearly impossible to get the truth out of him. It's scary how easily he can tell a lie and how believable they are.

You can't tell when he is lying because he doesn't show you any signs, you either know or you don't know the truth. Even when you know the truth, he can still convince you that you're wrong. The longer you know him, the more difficult it is to tell when he is lying.

He either lets his guard down or you catch him off guard. It is only when he trusts you and likes you does he let his guard down. When he does that, he starts to show signs of his true behavior. It's possible to tell when he is lying or wants to lie because the signs exist for a brief moment

It isn't easy, so you have to pay close attention to his eyes and hands. When he slightly clenches his hands or slightly tightens his grip on what he is holding, that's usually a sign that he is thinking of lying. Looking at his eyes isn't the safest way to tell if he's lying.

You can tell how he is feeling by looking at his eyes, but that's only when he lets his guard down. If his guard isn't down he will use them to show a wide range of fake emotions and draw you into his lies.

You can tell when you catch him off guard because his eyes will lose focus for an instant. Anything he says after that will be the truth or him trying to distract you. I can usually find those small signs, but I hope he won't lie to me this time.
