20 A REAPERS JOB 2/2

Charles had never in his life came across a person in a verge of dying waiting for the perfect time to pull his soul from his body. The entire idea seems to be absurd if not for the fact he was still standing on his own two feet even if his body was beaten black and blue.

Viole pulled him inside without anyone noticing. Neither guards nor a prisoner seems to see them as they kept on walking from one corridor to another. Every floor smells rotten and foul that Charles needed to wrinkle his nose in disgust.

Cells were covered in iron and only a tiny portion of a barricaded window serves as the room's source of light every night.

He waited for someone to notice two guys walking around unannounced in the most secured place but no one did. Not even the security camera watching every nook of the building.

He didn't know how he did it but Viole didn't give him any explanation so he decided to ask later.

He followed Viole around a bend, coming from below down the stairs that was only lit by two single light bulbs that was too small it couldn't light up the whole corridor.

An opened double door was at the end, they both stopped to looked. Men's in uniform about four of them stood around two others wearing a suit. One man handed a clip board full of crumpled looking papers and a pen, the other one easily signed the bottom without even looking at the content. He tucked the clip board on his arms and they shuffled out of the room. Two men in another uniform were left and Charles saw why.

They were preparing the recently killed man for departure, he had died from torture.

Viole pointed one tiny speck of a light hovering at the corner of the wall. It was so small Charles could have easily passed it on as something else if Viole didn't pointed it with his finger.

Viole shook his head before coming towards it.

"This one here is an example of a soul who had completely ripped out of his body. There are no longer anything keeping it anchored to his, this happens when someone wishes to die so hard than living in pain." Viole pointed out to Charles.

He watched as Viole slowly place his right hand palm up towards the speck, expecting it to come to him. It took a moment before it stopped hovering and placed itself on Viole's hand.

"He doesn't seem to remember." Viole whispered not looking at Charles.

"Although he knew about the last pain it's already becoming blurry." He continued.

Charles continued to watch him, not daring to see the two men wrapping the dead body in a zip locked plastic cover.

"When a soul is ready to pass on, you will know, it only needed a little nudge to go through. Like this one." Viole explained.

They both stared at the little speck becomes a little bigger as if borrowing the light around to surround it. It continued to hover until it swelled enough and completely disappeared as if sucked by something.

"That was done smoothly than I expected." Charles heard Viole whispered.

They both left that room without looking back.

Charles continued to follow Viole up the stairway to the next level of the building. He kept silent even though Charles wanted to ask questions.

They stopped on another closed door.

"This is my last charge." Viole said. "Any moment now, will go in."

Charles didn't want to see another dead body lying in front of him. All he wanted now was to go back. He didn't need another reason to stress out his lack of knowledge of what he had become.

"There is still one scenario where you pull out one soul's on a body yourself, but you have to wait for the exact moment of which the two would be ready to separate. This will help the transition. But if you force a soul to come out it can get slippery from there. The soul would most likely be able to remember most things about his life and would be unable to move on easily. When it refuses our help, it becomes a wandering soul, unable to find peace until it becomes so dark and become part of the world." Viole explained in a small voice.

"What happens then?" Charles asked.

"This cause troubles for the living, a bad luck for the believers and it causes accident or destruction."

That was why Reapers do this job to help with the balance. Viole also told Charles a Reaper may deny once soul. But too much can cause a Reaper a great deal because it comes as a job.

When both finally finished the deed they came out of the cell.

It was time to go back.

They both backtracked to the way they entered and came in contact with another Reaper far from the area they both walked into. Charles watched as Viole and the other one nodded to each other as a way of greetings and said nothing else. They continued to move on both in silence.

Charles though saw one light hovering near a light bulb on the ceiling, as if sensing it was seen it flew towards him light flaring. It freaked out Charles so much.
