2 Chapter One

2020

I was moving quickly, darting in and out, trying to avoid the beasts mouth. My long sword started to feel heavy in my hand as I grew more tired at each passing minute. I almost had the beast, but then I heard a voice, "Distract it, I'll kill it from behind."

I looked for the owner of the voice like an amateur. It distracted the monster though, apparently the monster was waiting for me to be distracted. I nearly got swallowed when the creature dropped dead in the street. The owner of the voice, standing on top of the beast triumphantly, pulling his rapier out of the beast.

I was instantly angry. This was supposed to be my kill. I wanted to be the hero. I marched right up to this so called hero and pushed him. "Who do you think you are? Coming in and killing my monster!" I scream at him.

"I'm sorry? I thought I was helping, and since do we claim monsters as ours? Unless you, yourself, are a monster. In that case though, I would have to kill you. I don't like killing pretty girls, so please tell me you're not a monster."

I glare at him, "I'm not a monster and you would do yourself good in not calling me pretty. Unless you want your eyes cut out."

He looks at me funny while wiping off the monster blood of his sword, "I'm not allowed to give you a compliment? Let me guess, a huntress of Artemis? Or perhaps a daughter of one of the eternal maidens, who has followed good old moms footsteps?"

"I don't have to tell you, but it's none of the above. I'm just not a fan of the snakes that have come to be men. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way."

I take off walking in the direction of the police station to inform them of the monster blocking the main road in their small town.

I get to the building quickly, as I said it was a small town, and inform of the Hell Hound in the road. They sent three men to go and round the monster up. Then the police chief muttered something about how they're good eating. Personally, I didn't want to find out how good the meat was. I wanted to get out of the town as soon as possible and move on from this. So that's what I set out to do. Except something followed me. As I later found out, his name is Damon. It was the boy who had nearly gotten me killed. He wouldn't leave me alone. As I walked to my car, he strolled about five feet behind me, telling me how the police were correct about the hounds meat being delicious. I ignored him the best that I could. It became increasingly hard the closer he got to me. I was waiting for the moment that he trespassed into my personal space. He did, it took him longer than I thought, but right as I reached the door of my car, I felt his breath on my neck. I quickly turned around and sent my fist into the bottom of his jaw. It hardly phased him. "You've got to be kidding me," I mumbled. "Why won't you just leave me alone? You've nearly gotten me killed, and now you're driving me up the wall!" I start yelling.

"Well, at first I was just trying to help, but now I feel the need to continue on your journey with you as your companion. Plus, you owe me, cause you punched me in the face. Which, I might say, was very unnecessary."

I looked at him, "No."

That was all I said before I got into my car and started the engine. I made one dire mistake, that was about to change my whole life, no matter how small it was. I didn't lock the doors when I got into the car. He noticed this. By the time I had shifted into drive, he was in the passenger seat, buckling up.

I quickly put the car in park and just looked at him. Just really looked at him. I noticed how dirty his blond hair was and how he was in desperate need of a shower. I almost considered taking him with me, but I was on my way home and my mama would kill me if I brought a boy home. After my father left, she swore to never love another man again, and expected me to become an eternal maiden just like my aunts. I was ready to become an eternal maiden too. My mother, a dryad, was loved by my father for a very long time, however, my father is an immortal God. Ares, God of War. When I was about three, he was told my fate, that's when he decided to leave. Even though he's the God of War and Destruction, he was scared of me. For I was fated to be the ultimate destroyer.

I decided that if I took him with me, I'd be able to get rid of him at one of the many stops on the way. I'd just leave him at one of the gas stations. Fortunately, my mama lived a good thousand miles away near the Rocky Mountains. I gave him another once over before pretending that I gave up on trying to get rid of him. "Fine. However, my car, my rules. So get your feet off the dash and put the seat back up. I don't like not being able to see the passengers while driving. Call me paranoid."

"That would be a suitable nickname," he says, before doing what I asked.

"You will not call me that. My name is," I pause for a moment, considering giving him a fake name before deciding against it, "Amethyst. You will do well to call me that and only that."

"Amethyst," he said, sounding like he was testing out how it sounded in his mouth, "That's a gorgeous name, I must say. Amethyst. My name is Damon, but you can call me anything you like."

I see him wink through the corner of my eye. What a flirt. I internally gag. "I think we both know that I'm just gonna stick to your name, Damon."

It's silent for a moment while I shift into drive and start driving down the road. I was just about to turn the radio on when Damon spoke up, "So, where are we going?"

I rolled my eyes at the small talk, "Well, I'm going to my moms, and I figured that I could just drop you off somewhere on the way. Do you have anywhere specific you want to go between here and the rocky mountains?"

There's a moment of silence before he mumbles, "Where would I go? We're leaving my hometown and everything I've ever known now. I've been sheltered all my life so I don't know about any special towns or big cities or even things to sightsee."

I almost felt bad about my plan to ditch him as soon as possible. Then he ruined it by saying, "I'll just come with you, that seems like a safe thing to do as long as you got that sword with you. Plus, I'll be able to help you with all the monsters you come across now." I hated that he said he would help me become a hero basically. I was doing just fine on my own. I was already annoyed with him for taking my kill earlier, how many was he planning on taking? It was at this moment that I knew that I had to get rid of him as soon as possible. It was also at this time that he realized my plan. He told me later on, that my face gave it away. He would say that it twisted in so much anger that he was terrified for a moment. He always said from that moment on, I terrified him and he was scared to get on my bad side, despite constantly getting on my nerves.

From the end of that conversation we drove in silence listening to old school rock on the radio. We traveled until I could no longer drive. Once we found a decently lit public parking lot where I could park the car for the night, we laid our seats back and fell asleep quickly. When we woke up, we were quite surprised to find--

"Mom, that's enough story time, I need to get the kids to bed. We can finish tomorrow." My daughter, Waverly states.

I simply nod my head, listening to the children protest. Once she's gone, I lay my head back and rock myself to sleep, dreaming of time when I was once younger and much stronger.
