"SLAP!"

The sound echoed in the room. Mary's eyes welled up with tears, still reeling from the blow, her cheek stinging from the impact. In front of her stood her father, tall and his eyes flashing with anger.

"Where were you?" He demanded, his voice thunderous. "You were supposed to meet with Mr. Thomas at Hearthside Café this morning. You kept him waiting for two hours. Your disobedience reflects poorly on us. Explain yourself, Mary!" He roared, his anger growing with each word.

Mary had her head down, staring at her feet. Loose strands of her hair hung over her face, obscuring her expression. Her fingers trembled at her father's words, but she remained there without uttering a single word.
