29 Chapter 29: Soul Mates, Part 3

It took another week, another three hundred and fifty in bribes, and another notch on his belt before Melvin could siege the office of Jessica Sage-Huber. Even then, she kept him waiting in the lobby for an hour and forty-five minutes. When he was finally admitted, she did not bother to get out of her leather chair, or even look up from her monitor. "What did you want to see me about?" she asked.

"It's about your campaign," Melvin said, placing his briefcase on her desk. "Do you intend to go through with this lawsuit?"

"First of all," she said, "the lawsuit has nothing to do with my mayoral campaign. It's for the children's safety. I'm sorry that's not one of your father-in-law's concerns."
