5 Chapter Four

Christina and I sat in the back of the class and talked until Ms. Jackson came in. When she did, the entire class got quiet. She spoke timidly, "Hello class, I do believe we have a new student joining us. Devyn Walters?" she checked her roll, making sure to say my name correctly.

"Yes ma'am" I answered.

"Would please stand up and say something about yourself?"

"Umm sure." I say standing up. "My name's Devyn but most people prefer to call me Dev. I like to wear this beanie because it makes me feel safe." I said looking down at the desk.

"Thank you Devyn. You may sit back down." I did. "Alright since this is the first day, do what you want just no PDA. We'll start actual class next class." She said. I was shocked. Normally teachers would go through the syllabus during this time. I wasn't complaining though.

I turned to Christina and started talking. We were in the middle of talking when someone walked in and slammed the door. "Ah, Mr. Mason! I see you decided to bless us with your presence today." Ms. Jackson said. He had a black leather jacket covering a white v neck tee-shirt with a pair of black jeans and boots. He had bad boy written all over him. And my screamed stay away so loud i figured the whole class could hear it.

"Oh my gosh! It's Kyle Mason." Christina whispered to me.

"Who?"

"Erik's best friend." I swear my jaw dropped. That was the Kyle Erikwas talking to?

"Him?"

"Yep" she said, popping the "p".

"Well, sit anywhere today Mr. Mason." Ms. Jackson said. "I'll be making a sitting plan over the weekend.

"My name is Kyle, not Mr. Mason. That's my father." He mumbled.

I started looking for an empty seat praying there wasn't one near me. Just my luck! Bad boy Kyle has to sit in front of me.

"Oh Scarface, don't act like you won't enjoy my presence." A deep male voice said to me.

"I said that out loud, didn't I?"I muttered.

"Yes you did." Chris said. Before I had a chance to say anything else, I was picked up out of my seat and put into the floor on my ass too! I looked up to see a smirking Kyle sitting in the spot I was just sitting at!

"Sorry but I just wanted to sit here and you were in my way." I groaned, got up, and sat down in the seat in front of Kyle.

Chris and I were silent. "Well, Candor, this is the longest I believe I have ever heard you go without talking. Congrats." Kyle purred at her. I glared long and hard at the asshole in front of me.

"Shut the hell up okay?" I growled, taking up for my only friend.

"Ooh is someone getting mad, Scar?"

I was about to respond when the bell rung. "Talk about being saved by the bell!"She cried.

"Yeah, can we just get to History?" I asked. She nodded and off we went.

The rest of the day went by pretty uneventful. Afterschool, I was in my room listening to Paradise Fears' song Battle Scars when I heard a car in the driveway. Aunt Valery was home. She walked in the house and asked if I wanted to go get Erik from football practice. I told her sure since I love to drive, I just never had the money for a car.

I pulled into the parking lot, sunglasses covering my eyes and scar. My hair was down and I looked nothing like I did earlier today at school. I felt someone staring at me; I looked up and saw the one and only Kyle Mason. He must've just gotten out of football practice. Apparently he noticed me looking at him because he regained himself and finally spoke up.

"You know, I must say you are looking mighty fine!" Does he not recognize me?

"Thank you, I think." I said to Kyle.

"So, are you new in town?"He asked, leaning against Aunt Valery's car. I was still in the driver's seat.

"Actually yes, yes I am." I purred; I sounded nothing like myself.

"How about I show you around and we can have dinner after?"

I decided to toy with him a bit. I shifted my sunglasses down a bit and batted my eyelashes. "You mean like a date?" A very seductive voice that I didn't think was mine said.

"Yeah, exactly like a date." He said.

"Well, you see..." I started while trailing my finger up his arm getting closer to his face. "I have a problem with that because I don't go on dates with guys who dump me on the floor in the middle of the class!" I slapped in the face and ripped off my sunglasses. His facial expression was just hilarious. He looked so confused. It took him a minute before responding.

"Scarface?"

I was about to respond when Kyle was jerked away from my car.

"What the hell?" I heard Kyle ask. He was turned and I could see who grabbed him. Erik. I could also see the other football players behind him all laughing their asses off at the little scene that just went on over here, I think. Erik's yelling brought me back to what was happening right beside me.

"I may be your best friend but insult my sister again and I won't hesitate to fight you Kyle. And just so you know, she's off limits to you. So I will say it once. Stay. Away. From. Devyn." He said and walked away. He got in the car and we drove away from a very pissed Kyle.

About five minutes after that, I looked over to see Erik playing Don't Tap the White Tile.

"Thanks for what you did back there." I said.

He put down his phone and looked at me. "Dev, you're my sister. It's my job to protect you."

"Well still, thanks." I said as I pulled into our driveway.

=========

It's been two weeks since Erik came to Arizona for me. I had finally started to fit in here. I had two great friends, given of course, one being my brother, but my other friend, Christina, she's like the most awesome friend you could ever have. Erik was right; none of my friends here cares about my scars. Or I thought they didn't. I had noticed Christina had started acting weird around me here lately. I had caught her staring at them on multiple occasions. I finally realized I hadn't told her about my past.

I took my phone out and texted her yesterday.

Hey. We need to talk. Come to my house after school tomorrow. Bring overnight clothes. -Dev

Okay? Uh-oh, sleeping over and a heavy talk, this can't be good. -Chris

Ha-ha. Gtg. See ya tomorrow! – Dev

That was yesterday, she is coming over today after school. I got ready and walked downstairs to get some breakfast. Erik was sitting at the table staring at a letter. "Ahem. What are you looking at?"

"This." He said handing it to me. I read aloud.

Devyn,

I know you hate me for what I did to you. I can't be forgiven. I deserve your hatred but I just want you to know that your brother, Erik, he's alive. I hope you find him. I hope you live a happy life. There is, however, one thing you should know. While being married to your mother 17 years ago, I made a mistake. VI had sex with another woman. She got pregnant, freaked, and ran. I found out here recently that she had a baby girl. I don't know the child's name, but the woman's name was Helen Cross. Find your half-sister. Live a happy life with her and Erik and any friends you meet along the way. I did and always will love you Devyn. I'm sorry for what I put you through.

Goodbye,

Your father.

When I finished reading, I had mixed emotions. I, not only have a brother but a half-sister too!

"Dev, are you okay?" Erik asked.

"Yeah... Let's get to school." I didn't want to talk about our father's betrayal. Not right now at least. If this was an omen for something not being right in the world, then it was damn huge bad omen. If only I knew what lied among me at school...

"Okay." He said, folding the letter back up and putting it in its envelope.

We rode to school in silence. I didn't want to speak; something felt off. I felt unsafe, but i would never tell Erik that. I couldn't. He'd just freak out.

It wasn't until the 1st period bell that something event worthy really happened. I was walking to History, alone because Chris— surprisingly— was with Erik, when I bumped into someone. I looked up to see who I bumped into, to apologize, and screamed in terror. I got looks from people. He covered my mouth with his hand and drug me to a nearby corridor that was abandoned. He whispered in my ear, "Did you miss me, Kitten?" His breath was hot on my neck and it felt vile and repulsive.

"You stopped coming around the house, Dev. Why is that?" Kameron asked feigning innocence. "I missed you; I had to come find you. Make sure my Kitten was doing just fine."

"I-Is that how we play things n-now?" I asked stuttering. "L-Like it never h-happened?" I asked as he removed his hand from my mouth.

He slammed me up against the wall, his arms went on either side of me caging me in. "Who have you told about me?" He asked me.

"No one! I promise!" I stated, looking down.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you," He said in a commanding voice. I slowly looked at him. "You know I have my ways of finding out if that is a lie. Now, listen to me very closely, Kitten," He said as he stroked my jaw with his thumb. He had called me the name he used to call me when we dated. The memories of that night flooded my memory as he made contact with my skin. "You're going to make sure that everyone knows we're back together okay? Because you're my Kitten" He asked messing with the hem of my skirt.

"I'm dating someone," I blurted out. I don't know why I blurted it, but I did. A look of shock, then anger, and lastly hurt flashed across his face before his mask went back up.

"Who?" He said calmly. I pulled my lips into a thin line, making sure he knew I wasn't going to answer. "Who?!" He yelled as he gripped my thigh. Pain coursed through me and as much as I wanted to cry out in pain, one thing I learned about Kameron is the more pain you show, the more pain he makes you feel.

"Kasen," I said and he growled.

"Should have taken care of him before i left," He muttered. "I really like this skirt on you," He whispered huskily in my ear making a shiver shoot down my spine. "You look very beautiful in it, Kitten," One of his hands rested against the wall and the other trailed down until he reached the hem of my skirt. I had seen this all before. When his lips claimed mine and his hand slipped inside my thigh, I whimpered, but to Kameron, that was a sign for him to continue. He pulled away and just looked at me. I wondered if anyone could see us, hear us; if anyone cared to save me.

"Stop, please!" I cried as I tried to move him off me, but it was no use. In his mind, I hadn't left him, and I was still his Kitten. I wanted nothing more than for him to just stop.

I pushed him away, but that angered him. His nostrils flared. Before I knew what was happening, Kameron had slapped me. Hard. My head flew to the side and I felt something wet drip down my face.

I was bleeding!

"You bastard," I growled, suddenly getting a boost of confidence. He obviously didn't like that.

Oops.

"Don't you ever call me that again!?" He roared as he grabbed my hair and slammed my head into the wall. I whimpered in pain and slid down the wall. I saw black spots in my vision, but I'll never forget Kameron's face when he realized what happened. I'll never forget how he ran from me in pure remorse.

I laid down on my side against the wall and finally let my eyes close.
