7 Chapter 7: The Engagement

(Alexander’s POV)

I was not going to lie, in all honesty, I had been quite caught off guard when Reagan had told me that she accepted my proposal. Sure, I had figured that with a little persuasion on my part she might accept but she had declared her acceptance of her own free will. Honestly, after her rejection, I had assumed that it would be the end of the situation so it was no wonder that I had been so surprised by her accepting the proposal.

Maybe it was the fact that her rejection had caught me off guard or the fact that Reagan seemed like the type of woman that would not take money that was handed to her. She seemed prideful, which wasn’t a bad thing because that just meant that Reagan wasn’t someone that was easily bought. But having the possibility that she might reject me and I would be forced to marry Victoria just to appease my father was something that had honestly worried me. I’m not sure if that situation had played out for real what I would have done. But now that Reagan had accepted, I no longer needed to worry about that happening.

Now, I was in his office about to tell my father that I had found a fiancée. For now, I had no intention of revealing Reagan’s name or who she was and what she did. The only thing that I planned to reveal to my father as of this moment was I was engaged and that the woman I was engaged to would soon be revealed on my terms.

“You called the meeting today Alexander so what is this about?” my father inquired, interrupting my thoughts.

“Just like you wanted I am engaged,” I replied, dryly.

It was rare to see my father shocked but when I did see it I felt as though I had the upper-hand. “Engaged?” my father asked, “Who is your fiancée? I hope that you took my suggestion and asked Victoria.”

“I have no intention of ever getting with Victoria, my fiancée is the woman that I chose of my own free will.”

“But son, Victoria comes from money and a marriage to her would secure a partnership with the Copenhagens, a partnership that would be very useful to us.”

Nothing would ever be good enough for my father, that was something that I was beginning to learn. It didn’t matter if I had chosen a fiancée that had all the qualities that would make her even the slightest bit acceptable. If my fiancée wasn’t my father’s choice then it didn’t matter who she was, Matthew would never accept her. In a split-second decision, Alexander decided to play a card that he would previously have had no intention of playing.

“The woman that I am engaged to I’m in love with her.”

Now Matthew looked even more shocked than he had the first time, with a hint of disbelief in his eyes. “In love? Son, marriage should not be about love it should be about business about what you can do for each other, that is why Victoria is a perfect match for you. What can your fiancée provide you in this marriage?’

“She’s kind and beautiful, smart and brave, shy and sweet, how could I not fall in love with her? To be honest we have been having a secret relationship for quite a few weeks now but I didn’t want to address it because we didn’t see it going anywhere. But now, I feel as though I can’t live another day without her constantly in my life.”

I didn’t even believe the crap that I was spewing from my mouth so I wasn’t sure if my father did either. I felt as though if I hadn’t made up this lie, then my father would continue to press the issue of getting engaged to Victoria.

“Well if you are indeed to head over heels for this woman then bring her to the charity event tonight, I would like to meet this woman.”

I smiled internally, knowing that I was getting exactly what I wanted. Sure my main intention for meeting with my father this afternoon was to mainly reveal my engagement to Reagan, but this was a plus. I had had every intention of revealing Reagan and their engagement publicly so this was just the icing on the cake. It was happening sooner than I had originally planned but it might as well happen sooner rather than later.

“Gladly, I will make sure that both of us are in attendance.”

With that I exited his office and looked on my phone, scrolling through my contacts. Last night, after Reagan had signed the contract, I had asked her to give me her number. At first, she had been skeptical, questioning why I needed hers when she had mine but after I had explained she had reluctantly given it to him. Now I was waiting for her to pick up the phone as it beeped on my end of the line.

“Hello, who is this?” Reagan asked as the line on her end finally picked up.

“You’ve already forgotten what your fiancée’s voice sounds like even though it’s only been a day since we got engaged?”

“Alexander? What are you doing calling me? I’m busy at the moment so I would appreciate it if you call me later.”

I attempted to make my voice sound more serious, “I called you because I need to get you ready for an event that my father is hosting tonight.”

“Why is it that I need to attend?”

I pressed the button on the elevator, “Think of it as your debut as my fiancée, its a perfect opportunity for us to not only announce our engagement to the media but also introduce you to my father.”

“Well, I still don’t see the reason why I have to drop everything that I’m doing just for an event.”

The elevator doors opened and I stepped inside, “Becoming my fiancée meant that your world is going to change drastically. Being in my world means that you can’t say just anything or wear just anything so there is a lot that I need to prepare you for before this event tonight.”

The other side of the line was quiet for a while before I heard Reagan sigh, “Okay well I’m finishing up my last class right now, so let me shower and get dressed, and then you can come at around 4.”

“I won’t wait so be done at 4 sharp.” I hung up the phone right as I heard Reagan about to say something.
