129 The Girl in the Corner

This was a big problem.

The best option was to throw her into surgery right away, but at the time that they finish, the evacuation may have started already, even if she had sometime after surgery, the risk of a post-operatory infection or a bad recovery was too high.

On the other hand, too much time already had passed, and the appendix may burst any moment, when that happens, it will make everything much more difficult, if she survives.

Even if I have some medical knowledge, this was not a decision I could do confidently, this was a healthy woman with appendicitis, once she goes into surgery, she will be fine in a couple of days, but she didn't have the time right now.

I went to the side with Dr. Santana and the rest of the group.

"Is there something we could do for her to hold on until we arrive at Green Shelter?"

"The way to treat appendicitis without surgery is, antibiotics and fluids, she already is receiving them, she might hold until we arrive at Green Shelter if we keep going with this treatment, but since she still hasn't recovered with this treatment I think that surgery is necessary, if we don't act soon the appendix might burst."

"What are the chances of infection if we move her right after the surgery?"

"I don't like the chances either. Also if there is a complication during the procedure, it can delay the evacuation."

"Then she will have to wait to get to Green Shelter."

They all nodded, a nurse got an order to change antibiotics. The staff on the first floor was getting ready for evacuation and putting it on hold because of one person wasn't something that could be done, we had spent most of the night here, and the idea was to leave early in the morning, I want to stick to the schedule.

The next beds were severe traumas and a couple of post-operatories, there were two that had an acute infection that forced us to reevaluate their condition.

One had basically his leg bitten off and was followed by a severe infection. The wounds were still healing, and once he was recovered, he will need to go into therapy for a while, the guy used to be a thug before, and had no power. In a two vs. one vote we decided to left him behind, Cecily's prediction says that if he followed us, he would leave the therapy shortly after because it was too painful.

The second case was similar to the first, but infection came from an injury on his stomach, he was barely able to be on the list of people that was supposed to be on this floor, and none of us thought that he would survive.

On the third bed was Javier Secada, 38 years. He was the Second Esper I found between the patients, when I asked him about it he didn't know that he was one, from his aura appearance I couldn't figure out his power either, it wasn't a common pattern. The color reminds me of the time I fought the earth spikes guy, so I think that it can be earth related, but I'm not sure. Javier used to be a firefighter. Unfortunately, they had to amputate most of his arm, but his knowledge may be useful.

The fourth bed was a man of about 54 years old, that lost mobility of both his legs, he also was grumpy. After insulting us for a while, he told us to leave him, and we did as he said. Probably he didn't refer to leave him here, but if I can't evaluate him correctly, I'm not losing my time.

From the two post operatory, one was from a colectomy, they had to remove a part of his large intestine, he should be already out, but because of the meteor shower chaos, he had some complications. The guy was a high school professor, he still needs more time to fully recover, but he should be fine with the travel.

The next one was more tricky, he received an artificial liver. Artificial organs are a way to extend the life of those who had money and don't want to wait for a real organ. The main problem with this was that they don't work as well as the real ones, and are disposables… they only work for 6 months to 2 years. The one that this guy received was enough for 6 months, but after that, he was supposed to get another surgery to replace it with a new one.

Sadly, that was not possible anymore, and we couldn't accept someone that we knew was going to die in less than a year.

At the end on the second floor, from the seven patients, just three were going to come with us. They started to prepare the people on the second floor for evacuation after we left.

The third floor was the people that were lost causes, Terry was already taken back to the first floor to evacuate him, but from the people on this floor, there was probably no one that could be saved.

Four people were dying from different sickness and were already lost causes before the meteor shower, there was a teenager between them. I decided to not let Cecily see their future, it was a waste of time, and there was nothing that could be done for them, just from the state of their vital points I could understand how serious their condition was, and it made me even wonder how they were still alive.

The next bed was a little more tricky, he ended here because of a trauma. He had lost the mobility of all his body after a battle, he could wake up after a couple of days, but only could blink to communicate. He was an Esper with a body enhancement, but most likely a speed type, there was nothing that he or us could do to help him recover. I let Cecily see this one just in case but as I thought this guy was bound to spend the rest of his life on a bed.

The last three people were on a similar condition to Conrad, they fall unconscious during the meteor shower and never came back.

The first was the same as Conrad, proper body functions, mind completely destroyed. The second was even worse and had some of his body functions deteriorated.

When we went into the third room, I saw a young girl on the bed. The girl looked familiar, but I couldn't get why.

As I already did on all the previous rooms, I took the chart on my hands and read it. before passing it to Mikaela.

Nadja Lindhal (15 Yrs)

Admission: August 14, 2050.

Diagnosis: Coma, unknown reasons.

Treatment: life keeping measures.

Recovery time: Unknown.

I could see that the girl was different than the others, she had the aura of an Esper, the way the aura concentrate her eyes told me that she had some form of enhanced sight, but it was probably more like a particular type of view.

Behind me, I could hear a light sob. Sigrid was on the verge of tears, and everything made sense now. I remember during the reunion how affected she was when we decided to not bring everyone to Green Shelter. Also, the reason that she looked familiar was that her looks were similar to Sigrid.

"Your Sister?"

"My niece, my older sister and her husband died a couple years ago on an accident, and she has lived with me ever since."

I nodded, I couldn't let this affect our decision, at first glance, besides the difference on the aura everything else looked the same as with Conrad. I don't know if it's because I know that she is Sigrid's sister or something else like my sixth sense, but I got a feeling that she is different from the other cases.

'Rose?'

I looked around and noticed that Rose was floating near the corner, I moved there as soon as Rose saw me, she shared her thoughts with me, and I could see a girl crying on the corner hugging her knees. She noticed Rose and start talking with her. The girl was Nadja, on Astral Form.

'Do you think you can help her?'

'I'm not sure how but I think I can, she probably is in a similar situation as when I did my first Astral travel.'

I looked towards the corner where I knew she was and said.

"Don't worry everything is going to be ok."

I turned around to the dumbfounded group.

"She is coming with us, get her ready for evacuation too."

Robbert looked at me completely confused.

"I think we should judge everyone equally, this case is the same as the ones as before… Is this because she is Sigrid's niece?."

Sigrid was completely confused and looked at both of us with pleading eyes.

"it's not because of that, this case is not the same and if you don't believe me just take a look at her most recent memories."

Robbert looked a little angry and went to the bed to put his hand on her head. This time the process was short, he opened his eyes completely confused and looked at me.

"It's you, telling her to not worry… followed by our conversation."
