127 Rejected

I knew that my words affected her mood, but it was something that I had to do, especially if this was the only person that has a good future ahead.

She calmed down a little after understanding that we had a lot more work to do, her work was the most difficult, she has to see if the ones that we decided really didn't have an option, so she was constantly going to see death.

In the meantime, I noticed that after what I did in the waiting room, Ethan got nervous. Most people wouldn't notice, but I could see a lot more than most of the people, the shaking, the way he moved his eyes and how he started to sweat a little.

After leaving the waiting room we moved to a big room with chairs and stretchers, there were about a dozen wounded people, and some of them were accompanied by someone.

Rose went to see them together with Lucy, with my ability I had some ideas about how were some of them hurt, this area was mainly adult traumas, so these people were mostly hurt during battle… broken bones, injuries that needed stitches and stuff like that were in this room.

"Do they know why we are here?"

"Yes, we explained the situation to all the people, at least those that are conscious."

Next to each stretcher, there was a little chart with the information about each patient, diagnose, treatment, and they also added a little prediction of the time that will take for total recovery.

I went to the stretcher that was nearest to me and took the chart.

George Turner (32 yrs.)

Admission: August 20, 2050

Diagnosis: Broken arm, Closed radius Fracture.

Treatment: Arm immobilization, painkillers.

Recovery time: 5 weeks.

Others: -----

Besides this, there were a couple of exams that after a quick look I gave them to Mikaela.

I used my eyes to see if there was any other problem besides his arms but there was nothing else wrong. If we took what the chart said It should take a little more than three weeks for him to be ready again.

He was visibly nervous, Mikaela was looking at her exams without making any expression, and Robbert was studying him.

"Hello George, how did you injure yourself?"

"I was fighting with a goat."

"Those are tough, the first goat I fought was the size of a cow."

"You are joking…"

This was Mikaela's reaction.

"Why would I joke about it? you can ask Gerhard, he was there."

"Mine was a normal goat, it was on my first battle." He was apparently a little embarrassed by the outcome.

"What did you do before the meteor shower?"

"Meteor shower?"

Sometimes I forgot that not everyone is still aware of how this happened.

"Collapse, Apocalypse or however you call it."

"I used to drive a cab."

He became more nervous than before, it was clear that he thought that a regular driver could be looked down in this new society.

"After you are fully recovered, and ongoing some real training would go and kick that goat's a** in revenge?"

He seemed to relax a little.

"Of course, and all the goat's family too."

Robbert made a little connection between us to talk about the case.

'I want to correct something, I think that the recovery time is wrong, I'm not sure about it, but he has a recovery type ability. It's not too strong, but it should be enough for him to recover sooner than what it says on the chart.'

'Then health wise there is no problem on him coming.'

Mikaela commented.

'But will he be a good addition to Green Shelter?'

'He is young and can learn to fight or to do something else, also even if it's low ranked he still is an Esper.' I added, even if I'm supposed to filter them, it didn't mean that I would discard most of them and just bring D-Ranks and people with a Ph.D.

This started made me realize some moral dilemmas that I could face. If I found someone that will die soon but is more useful should I take him over someone healthy that is useless? It was difficult if you say it like that, there were no real absolutes.

I will just analyze each case like this, maybe this doesn't happen.

What followed was a short vote, even Robbert who raised the "usefulness" topic agreed that there was no problem on taking him.

After receiving the news, George finally could be at ease.

We moved to the next stretcher and the next… and so on.

Lacerations, more broken bones someone got bitten…

A lawyer, a construction worker, a store owner…

1 week, 3 weeks left, 1 month…

No powers…

The people were evaluated one by one, as I already expected of this area they were all accepted. These were common traumas that were bound to heal soon, and as most of them were adult, they have something they could add to Green Shelter. The problem was probably going to happen on the second and third floor where the patients were severe, and the choices were going to be much harder.

The next room was even easier. There was a mix of adults and teens, most of them had stomach aches as a result of eating food that expired.

On some of the teen's chart there was a little star, when I asked about it, Ethan told me that it meant that they were orphans.

The people here mostly were getting fluids after the food poisoning. There was one exception, a guy that was bitten by a snake which I had to detox and make a new evaluation of the damage. Mikaela helped me, but in the end, the snake poison was not from an enhanced beast, so he was going to be okay.

The patients were grouped so there was just one last room here for us to see, the other rooms on the floor were empty right now.

The last one was pediatrics, there were some traumas, food poisoning, and even some with a simple cold.

As predicted I could see Mikaela's expression soften when she saw the kids. Robbert made a complex face because he knew that I brought him to be the bad guy.

There was one kid that called my attention, he was peacefully sleeping. I got near the bed and took the Chart.

*Terry Barker (7 Yrs)

Admission: September 3, 2050

Diagnosis: Food Poisoning.

Treatment: Physiological Serum.

Recovery time: 2 days

Admitted yesterday, I looked at the bag that was connected to his arm and closed my eyes for a second. I gave Ethan a fierce look to which he responded pretending being confused.

Without saying anything, I took the chart and left the room under the surprised gazes of the group that followed shortly after.

I went upstairs to the third floor, I had to stop from time to time to be sure that I was going on the correct way, Ethan kept getting more and more nervous until I arrived at another room where a kid was sleeping.

I took his Chart and read it.

Conrad Sullivan (8 yrs).

Admission: August 14, 2050.

Diagnosis: Coma, unknown reasons.

Treatment: life keeping measures.

Recovery time: Unknown.

I touched the bed and used psychometry again.

Before I noticed that the serum of the bag was not the same as the one that the others had and with vital points view, there were no symptoms of food poisoning, I thought that something was off, so used psychometry and discovered that the kids were changed.

The kid in this bed was Terry, the orphan with food poisoning, and the kid that was taken down was Conrad, the kid that went into a coma after the meteor shower.

The one that made the change was Ethan.

"Sigrid, can you look for at least two members of the board and tell them to come here? I also need a nurse with normal serum for Terry… without the sedatives."

Sigrid nodded and left the room.

"In this chart says, Conrad." Mikaela was looking at the board in the bed.

"That is not his chart, they changed the kids, he is Terry, and this is his chart, the kid that was sleeping on the other bed was Conrad."

A nurse appeared soon after, at least I think she is a nurse because she was wearing regular clothes but went directly to the bed and changed the serum.

'While we wait we should decide on Terry, he is just food poisoned and should be fine by tomorrow. He will be in your orphanage, and I don't know about your resources, so it's your call Mikaela.'

'We will accept him but what just happened?'

'I'll explain when the other two members of the board come, this could be delicate.'

Soon after Sigrid appeared again, this time with an elegant woman in her fifties and a man with a severe look on his eyes, like a veteran.

"We heard that you needed to talk to us?"

"Yes, I need to change Aurora Clinic representative, Ethan is from now rejected from being part of Green Shelter as his actions don't suit what we want from our people, I don't trust him, and since he is not welcome, I think it is appropriate to change him as your representative…"
