48 A Demon Took my Mommy

My original plan was to fight the boar for a while to get used to my speed and to the crossbow, but the presence of the girl changed my plans. I had to finish the battle fast, which was difficult with my current strength and this fighting style.

I took a deep breath and shot the crossbow once again the bolt went on the boar's back once again. This made the boar focus on me again and prepared to charge again.

Instead of reloading the crossbow I put it on my back. I can't get used to it, it hinders my mobility, and it's not lethal enough to worth it. Probably it will work against other types of beast and humans but in the last two battles it was just a hindrance, so I decided to change it for the handgun and the knife.

I moved towards the boar and took me three shot to achieve my goal. A bullet didn't hit the target, the second one went into the skin of his forehead, but it didn't look like it made any damage, the third hit the eye.

The squeals intensified, and another cry came from inside the house as response to the chaos on the street. The boar went berserk and charged madly at me.

Instead of withdrawing I got close too. I rolled to the side to avoid the boar and used my knife to wound one of its legs from his blind spot, I wasn't able to do it well but it started to limp a little. In the next charge, I aimed for the same spot, this time the damage was more, and the limping made difficult to perform a charge as powerful as the ones before.

With its mobility reduced the next step was to slowly accumulate more damage on a lethal point. I started to harass the desperate boar from his blind side and stabbed the knife in its throat. One time wasn't enough to get rid of it so after my first strike, I moved back to keep a safe distance to avoid the random headbutts.

I kept moving into the blind spot and the moment I knew it couldn't see me, I went in to stab his throat and wounded leg whenever I had the chance. I kept going in and out until the squeals became muffled and its leg became unusable. The boar was losing blood at a fast pace. I gave it a couple more stabs once in the floor but with my knife, I couldn't kill it, thus my hope was for it to bleed out fast.

I left the boar bleeding out on the floor and went inside the building. I tried to clean my bloody hands with a curtain, and following Rose instructions, I went to the second floor. I have already heard the notification giving me 5 points, I was glad that the boar didn't take too much time to die but the smell will definitely attract more beasts.

I could see some scorch marks on the wall that called my attention, in one of the rooms I found a terrified little girl crying under a bed.

"Hello" I tried to sound as nice as possible. The girl didn't expect someone finding her, so she looked at me with fright.

"I'm not going to hurt you, and the monster died, it can't hurt you". I don't think she believes me, probably all the sound of the battle made her even more nervous.

"Listen… no more sounds". She was still sobbing but was listening that the big sounds stopped outside so she started to calm down.

I waited for her to calm down a little, she was better but didn't leave from under the bed. Rose went outside to check if someone or something was coming.

"My name is Spencer, what is your name?".

"Dana".

"Dana do you want to come out, so we can talk?" she denied with her head.

"Mommy told me to hide here".

"Where is your mommy?"

"I don't know, a demon took her away…".

That explains the scorching marks.

I wanted to help her, so the mission appeared at the same time I heard that someone kidnapped her mother, but the time was really tight so she was in immediate danger.

"Do you want to come with me? I can help you find your mom".

"Really Mr. you can help my mom?!"

"Yes, but you have to come out first I can't leave you here alone while I look for your mother".

She pondered for a second and crawled out of the bed.

She was about 8 years. Her skill tanned, short dark hair, and brown eyes, probably one of her parents was Latin. Her eyes were red, and she had dried tears on her face she was scared because of the blood on me but the idea of me helping her mom probably gave her some strength.

"Will you really help me find mommy?"

"Of course but first I have to know when the demon took your mom?"

"In the morning…" she started to sob once again

"And how happened?" the time wasn't too much and I need all the information I could get to found her.

"We were sleeping together and I heard a huge noise coming from outside, I was curious so I went to the window to see. There was a demon throwing fire to people, I got scared and screamed. My mom wakes up and came to see me, we hide together, the demon came and talked about burning all, mommy went to beg to not burn it but he took her". She started to cry again.

I could understand what happened, there was a battle outside between a group and a guy with pyrokinetic powers. The guy heard the scream so after he won the battle he came to see who screamed. He noticed that they were hiding so to not lose time he threatened with burning the whole place. Her mother tried to talk to him but he kidnapped her, the guy never knew that he left a scared girl in this place.

I patted her head to calm her down.

"Do you know what happened to the guys he was fighting?"

"No, I hide all day until you came"

"Ok, now we are going to go to my house, there my friends are going to take care of you while I search for your mom ok?". She seemed a little reluctant to leave the house.

"If you stay here while I look for your mom the demon can come back". I kinda hated myself for scaring her to leave with me. But at the possibility of that guy coming back, she decided to come with me.

Rose told me that there was a cow outside eating the pig's body. Cows shouldn't be eating meat so I think is a good idea to avoid it. I carried Dana on my back and left that place through a window to an alley and moved from there toward the apartment.

With Rose help and my eyes, we were able to arrive without problems. I had used 1 hour to come back plus the time it took me to convince her to leave and all that I had about 8 hours to find her mother's location and rescue her.

Outside the sun was about to hide it was the first time I was going out in the night. I explained the situation to everyone in the house. Hope and Dante were going to take care of Dana, apparently, she always wanted a cat but her father was allergic, so she couldn't have one.

Dante's presence seemed to calm her a little. I didn't want to ask about her father in case he died during this event or something like that. I say goodbye to them and went to prepare to leave right away. I send Rose to move and rest on her body for a while, she insisted that she wasn't tired, but I told her to remember what happened last time she overexerted herself.

After the battle with the boar, I decided to leave the crossbow behind. I think that if we got to hunt in a group and we made more of the special bolts it can be useful but for now, I will stick with the handgun.

I spent 30 system points on a silencer for the handgun and an extra magazine, the noise is the big drawback of the firearms so with this I solved the main issue in part. Since I'm more used to it even if the bullets are weaker than the bolts I can aim better to weak points with it, so it's more useful to me.

I will be moving carefully to the place we found Dana and start tracking her mother from there. I told Rose to keep resting for an hour which is what should take me to get there. I was already familiar with the area and most of the time I was between Dante's area so if something happens I can contact him.

I was ready to leave the house again, this time alone.
