Without these four gentry families, and the smaller gentry families is of no threat, the empire could go into the hands of the emperor, but it is not that easy to do so.

These four gentry families have existed for three hundred years at the minimum. And these four gentry families have caused the downfall of the previous empire and bought the then head of the Tang family to be the emperor. The Tang is actually the fifth and weakest in power in gentry family rankings in the previous empire. Subsequent Tang emperors have tried to get rid the four gentry families, but they always fail to a multiple of reasons.
