7 Remnant Hunting

"It should be safe now." The Legion Of Heaven had already left. A man opened up his basement door, and walked out cautiously. He had hidden immediately after the angels descended, and had happened to survive the purge.

He walked out the house, and saw the hundreds of corpses that littered the streets.

"Hehe. Haha. HAHAHA!!! Fools! Now look whose smarter!!! I've outlasted all of you! Try to steal my food now why don't you?!?!" Laughing maniacally, he immediately began to search the corpses for any food and weapons.

In no time, he had a bag of guns and an expensive looking sword. His bag was also full of food. He laughed hysterically the entire time. It was the attitude of a man who survived a great ordeal whilst listening to screams of agony while he cowered like a turtle. The attitude of a man who reigned over the weak and cowered from the strong.

He was about to enter a building when he suddenly couldn't move anymore.

"Huh...?" He then looked down at his body. A white spear protruded through his chest and had pierced through the ground, nailing him in place.

"It can't be...!!!" He couldn't finish his words when his head flew off.

Soriel sheathed his sword and retrieved his spear. He looked upon the sky that had healed its scars and returned blue. The Legion Of Heaven had left, but he was left behind.

This was because although the Legion Of Heaven swept the world from every angle, they could only mainly strike at major cities and places of high population density.

But no matter how hard they tried, it was impossible to find and kill all the humans in a single sweep.

Like cockroaches that hid in the walls, there were plenty of humans that had hidden from the eyes of the legions in places far from normal human dwellings.

These places include mountainous regions, small islands, underwater caverns, dense forests, and underground shelters.

Hidden, they avoided the purge. But a God's decree had no exceptions.

When the Legion Of Heaven, they discretely left behind dozens of angels in different locations.

These angels would walk the world, searching for survivors, and then slaying them where they stood.

This job was usually left for newbie angels, so their level could catch up with the others. So this included Soriel.

No angels really enjoyed killing, since any soul that got into Heaven would not be a terrible person or a psychopath, but just because one didn't want to do it, that didn't mean they shouldn't.

It was just like eating vegetables, even if kids don't like it, they have to eat it because they're good for them.

For this reason, they left newbies to help them get used to it, and rid them of their attachment to life.

But it was truly a tedious task.

To search every inch of the earth withy only a few hundred people.

Every home.

Every shelter.

Every mountain.

Every forest.

Every cave.

Every basement.

Every inch of ocean.

Every secret passage.

Every hidden nook.

It just felt impossible. But Heaven was fair and just, so they got this. Soriel looked at his new helmet.

It looked strangely futuristic, like a helmet for a starship soldier. A stark contrast from heaven's rustic look where everyone wore robes like the Greek gods and armor like the Ancient Roman soldiers.

It was smooth, had he classic white and gold Heaven motif, and had a green visor.

The helmet had all sorts of search systems. From sonar to infrared to x-ray vision. It could even detect heart rates and breathing. It was the latest technology made by heaven's scientists.

Why did heaven have scientists you might ask?

Well people could do whatever they want up in Heaven, whether it's binge eating, video games, or research. Whatever Floats their boat, and for some people it's making advanced technology with heaven's ores.

He equipped the helmet, and turned on the infrared sensor.

He flew up high and swept the city he was in with his gaze.

He immediately saw many scattered figures of small critters and dogs, scavenging he ruins and feasting on the corpses Heaven left behind.

Eventually he saw some human figures scavenging in one of the abandoned homes.

He steeled his heart and moved to throw his spear as an opening.

The few scavengers were opening cabinets and pantries to loot any food they could find, when a white spear flew through one of their chests in an instant. He died instantly.

"What?! The angels are still here!!!" The other men were shocked at the sight of the man hanging off the spear sticking out the ground. One saw the sole angel flying in the sky out the window and shouted at the others.

"Run! We have to tell the others! We have to get the word out! Scatter! They can't catch us all!" One man immediately dropped what he was doing and ran out the back of the house at full speed.

The other men didn't hesitate and ran out the house at the same time.

They didn't see when the spear trembled and flew back the direction it came as they fled though. The next instant another man was pierced through. His eyes were open in shock, he had thought that there was only one angel that had already thrown its spear.

One of the other people fleeing saw the spear pierce the man, then watched it fly out his corpse into the angels hand, which was flying straight toward him.

He screamed and aimed his gun, firing wildly.

The bullets were all over the place, but the ones that did fly toward the angel was blocked by his shield, and his body was instantly bisected.

Soriel watched the last one run wildly through the telescopic function of his visor. He then flew up and followed him discretely.

He was a messenger of God, here to execute the humans on his decree. He slapped his face and flew forward with that resolve.
