4 For the Sake of the World

He was merely an ordinary soldier of the Legion of Heaven. One of thousands of Heaven soldiers. They were like carbon copies, all donning the same armor, weapons, and wings. You couldn't tell them apart. The only variety in them is their number of wings and gender, which are both rather obvious.

But this didn't mean they had no identity. He himself was called Soriel. Though his real name was Soren, he changed it to sound more angel-like.

He hadn't been an angel for long, he had been a soul in Heaven for a while, stuck between the choice of reincarnation and staying in Heaven. Eventually he decided he didn't like the mortal life that much, and stayed in Heaven to enjoy life, the afterlife that is.

After lazing around for some time, he chose to join the Legion Of Heaven to earn his wings, to become an angel, as they were pretty respected, and it didn't seem to be a lot of work.

"First time?" An aged angel with 6 wings whispered next to him.

It was actually his first time on an expedition. Usually he was sent out to do patrols or security. He didn't think the Legions Of Heaven had a lot to do, as usually, the mortal worlds didn't need intervention. And it wasn't like they had any enemies.

He had thought that he'll were their mortal enemies when he had first arrived, but that was all a fib, apparently.

Turns out Heaven and Hell were two sides of the same coin. If Heaven was a retirement home, then Hell would be a prison. It was basically a realm of punishment for the sinful before forcibly reincarnating their souls.

So the point was that the Legion of Heaven was not busy. They mainly did check ups on worlds and watched the borders of the universe or something.

"I can see you're uncomfortable. It's normal though, don't worry about it. I understand that purging an species is unsettling. It's not exactly something you'd imagine heaven doing, right?" That's exactly what he was thinking about. What kind of God does this.

"But you have to understand that God and Heaven isn't just some force of omnipotent goodness. It's a system of order. They monitor and manage the worlds." He did indeed have the impression that Heaven was a supreme merciful existence that lived to make people happy.

"Heaven does not take care of people, it takes care of life. It monitors planets, so life can flourish. Don't make the mistake of thinking all life is precious. Look at us, haven't we all died before? Even if we die, we just go back to Heaven. So our own 'life' isn't that precious. When we were mortal, we thought life was precious because we only got one, but now that we're here, it doesn't matter as much." Soriel gawked. He had never thought about it like that before. It was true though. Since life began anew, it was basically replaceable, which lowered its worth. When he learned that death as an angel just lead to going back to Heaven, he didn't really care about how he lived his life, he cared less about survival and living.

Mortals worked hard because they were aware of their own mortality, and wished to make it worth something, or live longer. But when you're immortal, those things don't matter as much.

"What matters is preserving the lives of these planets, which aren't replaceable. These planets need to live, so that when a soul is reincarnated, they have somewhere to return to. These humans who destroy their planet, have become a plague, and that's why they must be purged." That made a lot of sense. The planet was more important than a few lives on it. If there was something seeking to destroy the planet, no matter if it was a life or not, it would be better to get rid of the threat, rather than sparing them.

"But can't we just teach them to respect the planet or something?" He suddenly thought about this. They didn't necessarily have to purge humanity to save the planet, right?

"Well, it's too late. They gained a blessing from the Almighty, but they have nothing unite against. They have destroyed any enemies they might've had, so the only use of their blessings is to gain power and authority over each other. And for them, the only way to do that is to kill more and more. To put it bluntly, the planet is unbalanced."

"Unbalanced?"

"In other worlds, there are often two or more races that have a rivalry, both growing at the same rate. So they gain strength to fight each other. They gain strength by fighting each other. They grow by competing. But here, there's only humans. They are all enemies with each other. There's no absolute good or evil to unite them. The only way to gain an advantage is to take strength from the world."

He understand now. There is no circle of life, because one part was destroyed, so the circle collapsed.

"To fix this, we have to kill everything with the ability to level up, so that, the world can be reset, and be balanced again. Then there will be no one to target the planet."

"Wait. But the source of the imbalance is the ability to level up to gain power and authority that's become their motive to destroy things, right? But why can't God just take it away?"

"Well you see, God can't take away the blessings he gives, he can only refrain from giving them. So while he can prevent the future humanity from having the ability, it's the job of the Legion of Heaven to reset humanity."

Soriel finally understood that it wasn't the people who made the world, it was life itself. If the people made the world sick, then they must cure it. To do that, they have to kill all the humans.

With new resolve in his heart, Uriel pointed her sword to the planet, and the Legion Of Heaven dived to the earth.

Screams immediately began to reverberate from the planet as the purge of humanity began.
