2 Family

I'm flying through the air like a bird, looking down on society as I drift through the air. I can feel the wind whirling all around me, and I hear a faint sound in the distance. What could that sound be? It's sharp and short, almost like someone's... banging a spoon against a pot!?

I wake up with a jolt, blinking my eyes quickly trying to clear my blurry vision. I bolt up from where I'm laying and make eye contact with my dad, who's standing in the hallway outside my room banging a wooden spoon against a pot from our kitchen. I guess that explains the sound from my dream... it's a shame he woke me up, it's rare to get a moment of freedom like that, even if it's not real.

Things have been crazy in my house for the past couple weeks. The testing is coming up, and my parents are super excited about it. I really don't understand why they're so excited, it doesn't even have anything to do with them! It's my test after all, they shouldn't be freaking out like they just won the lottery. They're completely convinced that I'm going to be one of the chosen, and I- "Dad, stop banging the freaking pot before I blow you out the window!"

"Aw, don't be like that sweetie! Today's a special day, it's the first day of testing after all! All our lives are gonna be completely different soon, I'm telling you!" Great, more reminders of how I'm going to be chosen' and I'm going to change the world'. I'm sick of this crap.

"I DON'T GIVE A GOSH DARN DIGGITY DANG ABOUT THE TEST JUST SHUT UP!" I yell back at my dad. At this point I've gotten out of bed and I'm standing with my hands pushing on the door frame with the power of a thousand angry teens.

"DON'T RAISE YOUR VOICE AT ME YOUNG LADY! THIS BEHAVIOR US UTTERLY UNACCEP-" He started to yell back, but got cut off by my sister's door. She slammed the door open right in his face and stood in her doorway, almost the exact mirror image of me standing across the hall. I slowly raise my eyes from the floor where Dad is lying spread eagle on the floorboards, the initial shock from the arrival wearing off.

"Both of you had better shut up before I bring the wrath of a thousand burnt cookies upon the taste buds of you all!" Somehow she manages to make such a silly sentence sound absolutely horrifying, I don't understand how she does it. I have one scary sister, that's for sure. Well, technically she's not my biological sister. Both of us were adopted into the family because, well, you'll see later.

She's really pretty, with long brown hair running down her back, and nice proportions for her age. She has super fair skin that seems to glow. She's slim and is about five foot seven. She normally has a great attitude, but is really scary when she's angry. She's almost the exact opposite of me, actually. I've got long wavy brown hairwith streaks of blue (I'm not sure how, it's my natural hair color) and a smattering of freckles across my pale face. I'm pretty slim, and I'm about five foot four. I've got a pretty bad temper, too, but I hide it pretty well when I'm at school. Anyways, back to my sister.

She's seventeen right now, and is in culinary school learning to become a baker. She had her test a couple years ago, but didn't make it. Her oddity isn't exactly hero material after all, so it wasn't really surprising when she wasn't chosen. She has a cooking oddity, which makes her able to see the ingredients in any food or drink that she looks at. This is part of the reason why she enrolled in cooking school, that and the fact that our Pops can't cook worth a crab. I swear, anything he cooks is straight-up inedible. Yeah, it's that bad.

"Um, Kaitlyn? What happened here?" Pops peeked his head around the corner of the hallway that leads into the kitchen, taking in the sight of Dad laying on the floor with a spoon and a pot in his hands. "Oh! That's where that pot went! I was looking for that!" He skipped down the hallway and took the pot out of Dad's hands, not bothering to ask if he was okay. You're probably confused at this point, so let me explain. This is what I was saying you'd see later. You see, both me and Kaitlyn are adopted because we have two dads. Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I love my Dad and Pops, but it's a little much. Most people don't know about my parents, but that's completely fine. They can just assume I have a normal family and the world will continue to roll 'round.

"Wait, don't tell me you're trying to cook breakfast again?!" Kaitlyn looked at Pops, genuine fear shining in her eyes. We both made eye contact, I nod, and Kaitlyn bolts out of her room at the speed of sound towards the kitchen.

"Hey! Dad always says my cooking is delicious!" Pops yelled after her, proceeding to chase her into the kitchen. Looks like we're gonna have another food war, this happens every week. I don't know why Pops even tries at this point, we all know that the kitchen is Kaitlyn's territory.

"Ughhh, hey, who took my pot?" Dad finally got up from the floor, emphasis on from the floor, and the first thingbhe thought of was his stupid pot. I shouldn't have expected anything else from him. I sighed and then turned back into my room, slamming my door into Dad's face. Walking up to my window, I look at the light blue sky. It's such a pretty blue, and there are some lovely white puffy clouds in the sky. It looks so nice, almost exactly like the sky I was flying through in my dream. I look over to my room's wall at my calendar. Sure enough, today's the first day of the test.

I exhale loudly from my nose, "Today's the day I start my journey to change the world." I say sarcastically to myself. "Guess it's time to get ready." Turning to my closet, I go to get dressed dor one of the craziest days of my life.
