5 Childhood

Months flew by and seasons passed as Rye continued to spend his time in the orphanage. Except now, he no longer sat in silence and cultivated like a lunatic. He had reached stage 1 level 4 in [brain manual of the gods] at the age of 3 and a half and since then did not touch cultivation.

It was quite fortunate that there was a library close to the orphanage. He would spend his time in the local library researching about quirks.

Quirks were quite a strange thing. They suddenly appeared in the world and spread among the populous, until now, a time where 80 percent of society had quirks.

He had many theories regarding the existence of quirks.

'It was most likely a virus.'

Viruses worked like cancer. But unlike cancer, viruses had to be brought from outside of the body through a foreign source. Then it would spread and change the genetic make up of a person. In this case, it gave people superpowers. Of course there were many imperfections with this theory. In his old world, there was no such thing as a 'good virus'… but it seems that this virus was 'good'.

'But how did this virus come about? What caused such a thing? Could it be natural… or… what if… No, speculating won't do me any good…' Rye muttered to himself, as he looked over pages and pages of writing, each of which was filled with notes and diagrams.

'I need some specimen… oh and some equipment…'

Without the right tools, making any more conclusions would be impossible.

'Hey Rye… what are you doing?' asked a soft voice from his side.

He looked at the doll like girl beside him. Just a single look at her rosy plump cheeks, twin tails, ebony hair and brown eyes and one could tell that she would surely become a beauty when she grew up.

'Researching…'

'You are so boring… come and play with me… please?' she asked with a sad expression

'No.'

He had fallen for this trick way to many times.

'Please? Just a little time won't hurt right?'

'No.'

'I'll tell…' she whispered in a threatening voice.

'Ok,' he replied immediately.

Natasha had once made Rye stay in the orphanage for an entire week, because he had made her cry. It had been torture…

'Thanks Rye… you are the best.'

Thus his childhood continued. Years passed slowly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 years later…

He lay there comfortably, wrapped up in his warm blankets.

'Rye… Rye…'

He used his hands to block out the noise.

'Ahh… so comfortable…' he thought as he drifted off.

'RYE!' The voice continued to yell, as he felt his body shake.

He groggily opened his eyes.

'What?' he asked

He looked above him, to see the cute face of girl in school uniform, peering down.

'It's time for school! Aren't you excited? Wake up!'

'It's too early…' he said as he snoozed off. 'Wake me up when school's finished.'

'If you don't wake up… I'll let you test my new move…'

It seemed like Mellissa had somehow developed a personality where she would get people to do what she wants with violence.

'Violence isn't the way to solve your problems,' he said in a dignified voice, before trying to get back to sleep.

'Of course it isn't. Violence is the only way to deal with Rye. Now get up before…'

Correction, Mellissa had developed a personality where she would get Rye to do what she wanted through violence.

'Ok… ok… I'm up…' he said slowly before rising from his slumber and getting ready.

'I put your clothes onto the bed,' she called out to him.

'Yeah… yeah… I wonder where that cute little girl that would follow me around went…' he muttered as he thought back.

He had originally not wanted to accept her. After all, he always been alone in his previous life. But how could he not feel even a bit of warmth towards the girl that would follow him around wherever he went and did her best to help him.

Once he had gotten ready, they both walked downstairs.

The orphanage was split into two parts. The ground floor was a living area and dining area, while the first floor was where the dormitories were.

Due to the fact that there weren't that many children in the orphanage, each child was able to get one room to themselves.

'Hey Rye… aren't really you excited for school?' asked Mellissa as she ran in front of him and looked at him cheerfully.

'Not really…' he replied gloomily. To him, school was just another waste of time. Too bad that he couldn't skip, or someone would tell on him…

They walked out of the orphanage and continued to walk down the footpath.

'Luckily the schools close…' he muttered to himself.

'Hey Rye?'

'What is it now?' He said as he looked over at her nervous face.

'She's so easy to read,' he thought.

'Are you excited to awaken your quirk?'

'Quirk… 5th grade…' he thought to himself.

'Yeah… I guess.'

'I knew it… Rye always researches about quirks. Aunty says that it is one of your few passions in life…'

'Hey… I have a lot of passions!' he cried out indignantly. The previous him wouldn't have bothered to have reply to her… but youth changes everyone…

'No you don't. You're so boring…'

'I research a lot of very important and interesting stuff…' he said with dignity.

'Yeah… yeah… that's what you always say. Hey Rye?'

'Yeah?'

'I am going to get a much stronger quirk than you!'

'Oh really… and why is that?' he said as he looked at her curiously.

The wind passed by, rustling the leaves on the trees.

'So I won't be useless…'

He looked at her for a second and then sighed. He raised his hand and roughed up her hair.

'Don't worry… no matter what happens, you'll still be my friend…'

'Really?'

'Yeah…'

'Do you promise?'

'Yes… I promise'

'Ok then its set in stone. You can't back out now!'

'Yeah… yeah…'

'But I am still going to get a better quirk that you!' she said proudly. 'It's going to be the strongest quirk and then I'll use it to make you play with me whenever I want!'

Rye realized that it might be dangerous if she did get a better quirk than him.

'I should really begin to look into how quirks manifest…' he thought.

'Please don't…'

'I will!' She stated with supreme confidence.

He looked at the time on his watch.

'Crap… we are going to be late. Aunt will kill me…' he said as he took Mellissa's hand and ran towards the school.

'Wait up… Rye!' she shouted as she quickly followed him.

As he ran forward, the school began to come into vision.

He looked at the towering gates and large buildings.

'This will be the first step…' he muttered as he entered the campus.
