10 First Experiences

Starting something new for the first time is always scary.

At least, that was how it is for me.

I remember on my first day of elementary school as a fresh, immigrant, second grader. I held onto my dad's big, warm hands and tried to hide behind him as the tall, blonde teacher greeted me into her warm class.

I remember on my first day at a new junior high school, waiting alone in the counselor's office for I had transferred in the middle of the school year. I fidgeted with my violin case and waited anxiously while my school schedule was being printed out.

I remember my first day of work, all nervous and big-eyed. I pretty much kept to myself and listened patiently and attentively as my supervisor explained as she gave me a tour of the office.

The first time I drove a car.

The first time I got into an accident.

The first time I had to call my insurance to claim the accident.

The first time I got a speeding ticket.

The first time I had to go to court for the ticket.

The first time I had to call and schedule my doctor's appointment.

The first time I had to call my health insurance to check my coverage.

Et cetera. Et cetera.

Even though there were a lot of things that I have done for the first time, I am still hesitant to do something for the first time.

You would think that with all the "first experiences" you go through in life, you'd be ready to handle a new "first experience."

Even though, deep inside, I know that with that first jump out of the way, it becomes easier since it is no longer a "first."

Why is that "first" so darn scary though?
