Locked Class

Thanks to the Room's Map Janu knew where he had to go to obtain all of the loot. It wasn't as simple as it seemed, though. The deeper he went to the maze the more enemies he had to face.

'What a bonus.. I might be able to kill a level 40 monster. But it bothers me. An awakened should get a class after he gets a skill. But my class is still unlocked. My stats are also not common...

No use thinking about it.'

Monsters after monsters had fallen on his hands. Along the way, when opportunity rose, Janu used materials he obtained to Craft, raising its level to 2. He unlocked better equipment and Enchant. This new skill enabled him to enchant equipment with magic to make its stats rise or make it elemental. Too bad, in this dungeon Janu couldn't find any magic crystal. To enchant equipment, a blacksmith needed a magic crystal, which would give various effects depending on the types.

Janu got a load of equipment that he had crafted, none of which were needed. He surely could sell it and be rich, but he also felt that he would need coins.

'If I sell it outside I'll get a lot of money. But if I want to use the system store then I need to sell it in the system store.

Let's sell first in the system and get some coins. If I sell it outside it might cause suspicion. I just got my Raider ID and no way a new raider sells a batch of equipment.'

[Do you want to sell all of the selections?]

'Yes.'

[Received:

For normal raiders, trying to clear dungeons was like a double-edged sword. They gained tons of experience to level up, but the risk was greater. However, for Janu it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. There were many things he wanted to accomplish. Finding the cure for his mother, looking for his missing father, becoming an S-Ranked Raider, and many more.

Raiders might rise in ranks if they had the potential. Meeting a fated encounter or having a large influence could increase the chance to get top-tier skills. Obtaining a top-tier skill stone didn't guarantee that a raider could get the skill. Many had failed to do so. No one understood the reason behind this. However, some fortunate raiders had risen to S Rank. A total of 8 S-Rank Raiders in the nation were known as of now.

One was the President of the United Raiders. He was known as the first S-Rank in the nation and was believed to be the strongest. The leaders of the five Top Guilds: Asgard, Garuda Mystic, Red Moon, Abyss Dragon, Four Kings were all S-Rank. The remaining two were the Vice Leader of Asgard and Garuda Mystic. All of them had Advanced Class: Magic Knight, Berserker, Shadow Assassin, Archmage, and Sage.

Continuing his exploration, Janu finally arrived at the boss room. He opened the door and carefully observed his opponent.

'Level 45 Skeleton General. This is on the same level as a C-Rank dungeon. My level is 32. It's risky. Let me go back first and raise my level more.'

Just as he turned back he realized that he had no idea how to leave this temple.

Bang..!

The door closed.

[System Alert

Defeat the boss of the 1st Floor]

'Dang.. Whatever..'

Janu took a defensive stance, trying to test the enemy's strength.

HP: 1,800

MP: 260

Skills:

- Charge

- Triple Stab

Drops:

- Flame Lance

- Steel Plate

- 2nd Floor Key

The enemy charged and activated Triple Stab. The first stab met with Janu's Iron Shield, which he replaced the Round Shield with. The second stab grazed his waist ripping his leather armor, making him bleed and fortunately the third stab hit nothing but the air because Janu had rolled on the ground.

'That hit took a third of my HP. If this continues, it will be hard just to survive.'

He kept his distance and quickly drank a Healing Potion. He readied his shield again and carefully approached his enemy. The enemy stabbed his chest but was blocked and it launched another attack to the head just to be parried.

'It's strong. I need to create an opportunity.

Inventory.'

Puff...

Smoke filled the room. Janu just took a Smoke Bomb and threw it. It distracted the enemy's vision and he stealthily moved to the enemy's flank.

'Now..'

'Vertical Cleave'

The Skeleton General was shocked by the sudden attack but it somehow managed to block it with his spear. It wasn't a perfect block and the sword still landed on its arm.

'Triple Hit'

Critical.. Critical.. Critical..

Three critical hits but the Skeleton General still had more than a half of its HP.

Janu knew that he needed to focus and didn't have time to be disappointed. He continuously swung his Gladius at the enemy and no one knew how many hits landed. He only stopped when his opponent blocked his attack and pushed him back with his spear. It, then, jumped into the air trying to do a plunging attack.

'That was close.'

Had Janu not rolled again on the ground, surely his opponent would have one-shot him. There wasn't much time to appreciate his luck.

"Screeech..."

The enemy screamed and threw his spear to kill Janu. It was out of the ordinary for someone or something to throw his weapon during a melee combat. Surprised, Janu was late to dodge in time. The spear succeeded to leave a deep cut on his left shoulder. If he hadn't attempted to dodge, the spear would have definitely left a hole on his chest.

"Uurrgghh..."

Janu didn't have time to care about the pain. Seeing his enemy was bare-handed, he countered by dashing from his position to slash the leg. The enemy staggered and...

'Vertical Cleave'

The enemy was hit on the chest making it lost his footing.

'Flash'

He was already at the enemy's blind spot and he swung his sword at the neck.

Critical Hit..

The enemy crumbled and thus this was his victory.

Janu went back to where he had been. It was exactly the same spot. His clothes were worn and torn and bloodstains were everywhere. He took a shower even though it was 4 AM. He got rid of his clothes and went to bed.

Teet..teeteeteett..

The alarm woke him up.

"Hooaamm"

He was still sleepy and yawned. He checked his status before anything else.

'Level 36. Only one day and my level skyrocketed. If people knew they would be dumbfounded. My class is still locked and I have no clue as to how to unlock it. I don't even know what it would be. Such an anomaly. I can wield knight and warrior's equipment. I have Dual Wield, making me look like an assassin. I have Craft skill, which is exclusive to a forgemaster. I even have Troll's Blood which has a similar effect as a white mage's skill... or maybe not. My stats' growth is also quite balanced. What should I do? Should I go to the UR to consult about it?'

...

At the hospital

"Hi, mom. How are you feeling today?"

"Oh, Janu. Come here, sit here. I'm feeling much better. The mages won't send me home, though. They said they needed to observe me more."

"I'll talk to them to let you go home, mom, if you're feeling better."

"No, it's fine. Let's just follow their instructions. Maybe they need more time to find or create a cure for my illness."

"Ok, then. Let's hope for the best."

...

...

"Mom, there's something I want to tell you. But promise me that you won't be angry. Don't be sad, either."

"What is it? You can always tell me."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Janu took a deep breath.

"I'm awakened."

"Whaatt..!?"

Shock and disbelief could be seen on Rianna's eyes.

"Don't worry, mom. I'm just awakened and I haven't unlocked my class yet. I'll go to dungeons as a miner or a porter. I won't be careless. I promise."

Tears were flowing from her eyes. Janu was broken-hearted but he tried his best not to show it. He knew that his mother would feel bad and it wasn't good for her condition. He just wanted his mother to be happy, or not sad at the least. But, he couldn't just lie.

...

"Son. I know that you are a good person. You've always been so caring. I'm such a bad mother."

"What are you saying, mom? Please, don't be like that."

"You're an awakened, right? So, it means you're 20 now. How could I forget about your birthday."

And she cried harder.

'Huhh? I thought she would be shocked by my awakening.'

"Don't mention it. It's okay, mom. I'm not a kid anymore."

...

"To tell you the truth, I applied as a miner in the UR. I'll start tomorrow."

"What?" she became worried from what she had just heard.

"I know you're worried mom. But rest assured, it's only an E-Rank dungeon and there will be some E and D-Rank Raiders. Even the leader is a C-Rank. I'm not going there to fight, only to mine. The payment is better than my current job."

"Okay, but promise me you'll be careful."

"I promise, mom."

"Okay, now do me a favor, will you?"

"Just tell me. I'll do anything."

"Go to the bakery and buy a cake. Don't forget the candles. We'll celebrate your birthday and your awakening."

"Okay. Wait for me here."

Janu left her mom. In his heart there was a complex feeling. He didn't know how he felt; happy and grateful, sad and worried.

...

...

The day came.

"Attention. For all the miners, collectors and porters for today's raid please assemble at the worker's section on the left wing."

After some time, a man in his forties came in holding a piece of paper. He seemed to be of high position looking at his attire.

"Good morning, everyone. It seems that everyone is present."

'Janu Dewanto?' He was a little bit surprised when he scanned the names on the list.

"My name is Jono Waskito, an A-Rank Raider, and I will briefly explain the raid. Some of you are veteran workers, but I can see some freshmen here. The team is composed of 10 E-Rank raiders, 6 D-Rank raiders and the leader is Nohan Pranata, who has just advanced to C-Rank. Your task is to enter the dungeon an hour after the raid team enters. Well, except for the porters, you will go together with the team at the rear. You will be protected but keep your distance, nevertheless. Your safety is a priority. The collectors will collect the monster corpses, or what remains of them. The miners will mine the magic crystals. After you finish, don't forget to take your payment from Mr. Lukman here. He will be at the post at the dungeon entrance. Now, get ready, take your tools and get on the trucks."

"Janu Dewanto."

"Yes, sir?"

"A moment here. Do you know me?"

"Pardon?

...

"Aren't you Mr. Jono?"

"Ha..ha..ha.. That's not what I mean. Are you perhaps Capt. Yuda's son?"

"Yes, sir. He is my father. That's what my mother told me. I never know him, though."

"I'm sorry about that. You've grown up. I met you when you were still a baby, so you can't possibly remember. You can call me 'uncle'. We'll talk again later. I'll let your other uncles know about you. Now, go."

"Yes, sir."

'Oh, Captain. If only you knew, you had a handsome son, just like you. You must be proud.'

....

"What's your name kid?"

"I'm Janu, sir."

"I'm Parjo. This is Sibas, and this is Sabar."

"Nice to meet you all, Sirs. I'll be in your care."

"No need for the honorific. We're all grassroot. Just call us by name."

"That will be rude, sir. My mother always tell me to be respectful to elders."

"You're a good boy. Your parents must be proud of you."

"Thank you, Mr. Sibas."

"Hmmph.. pretentious. Kids nowadays are all pretentious. Nice in front but talk bad behind."

"Don't mind him, Janu. He's always like that. Quite the opposite to his name. His name means patient, by the way."

All laugh, except Sabar.

"What's your rank?"

"It's D-Rank, Mr. Parjo."

"Whooaa.. For real?" Parjo and Sibas were quite surprised.

"Yeah, right. Boasting to the max.."

"What's your problem, Sabar? He might become a famous raider in the future."

"But you haven't got any skills?"

Janu nodded and gave an awkward smile.

'I've got some skills but no class. Sounds like nonsense, even for myself.'

"Not buying skill stones?" Surprisingly Sabar threw a question.

"Well, skill stones are expensive and I can't just spend tons of money to buy some random skill stones. I'm not from a rich family. I don't even have any idea about what my class would be."

"I knew it. What could a newbie possibly achieve." Sabar mocked.

"Can you just shut your trap?"

"How about your stats? The highest stat can be a sort of clue, right?"

"Well, I'm ashamed of myself. I'm afraid all of you will laugh."

'I can't just reveal my stats, can I?

"Do you know that dungeons evolve? They say that if a dungeon isn't cleared at a certain period it will be difficult. The monsters are getting stronger inside the dungeon if it's not cleared as fast as possible. No one knows why, though."

"Really? Isn't it just a theory?"

"It is true. How can you explain the appearance of A-Rank or even S-Rank dungeons? That's because they weren't properly taken care of in the past."

"Are you saying that if dungeons had been taken care of, they wouldn't have evolved, and there wouldn't be any S-Rank Raiders?"

"That's what I'm saying."

'That makes sense. But there are many uncertainties about dungeons.'

The men continued to chat, mostly about the top guilds and debate on who was the hottest raider.

'Married men talking about some hot girl. I guess men are men."

The convoy arrived and soon the raid team was deployed. It was almost an hour when staff on duty gave sign for them to enter. A total of 30 workers and a White Mage joined.

"Why is there a healer with us?"

"Oh, that White Mage? You came here without knowing the risk?"

"What risk? We are far behind the raid team, right?"

"You noob. If we stay long inside a dungeon, we will be cursed. That's why she's there. Don't ask about the raiders. Low curses don't work on them. But they're still prone to higher curses."

"Don't worry. We've been in this business for many years. We're completely fine, right?"

"C'mon men. Start working. The faster you swing your pickaxe, the sooner we'll get our payment."

"Make sure you don't ruin the magic crystals. The quality will decrease and we'll have a huge loss." The staff reminded them.

"He sure is noisy."

"Shhh.. Just shut up, will you?"

Janu swung his pickaxe in a constant manner and his speed was considerably faster than most, if not all, of the miners.

"Are you sure this is your first time, kid?"

"That's a D-Rank miner for you."

During his job Janu could notice the difference in quality thanks to his Appraise skill. From the surface magic crystals all looked the same. The differences were just in size and the depth of the color.

'Maybe this is the cause of the different results when a blacksmith imbues equipment with magic.'

They work for two hours before the staff let them have a break. During the break the white mage would use Dispel to clear away 'the curse'. The curse was just like common sickness; headache, nausea, sleepiness and the like.

"Next." The White Mage called the next worker, and it was Janu.

"Heh? You're just fine. You're not a raider, right?"

"Yes, mam."

"Don't call me mam. I'm just seventeen."

'Yeah right, seventeen. No one under twenty can become awakened.'

"Ok, you can rest. Next."

'That's odd,' she thought.

....

"Uhmm.. Mr. Staff, can I ask something?"

"Who're you calling Mr. Staff? You might as well call me Mr. Greatsword or Mr. Dagger. The name's Lukman Saragih. Mr. Jono mentioned my name during the briefing, right? Don't forget about that."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Lukman."

"Okay. What are you gonna ask?"

"Can I keep some magic crystals? Please?"

"Magic crystals are priceless. You know that, don't you? But I saw that you worked really hard. If you work harder yet again, and we can finish the job sooner, I will give you a bonus. I might let you keep a magic crystal, or two."

"Well, thank you, sir. I'll do my best."

"That's a scam. Just work normally. You can always buy magic crystals. Buy it online. It's cheaper."

"That's fine, Mr. Sibas. I want to take some souvenirs with my own hand."

They continued their job and took a break every two hours. The miners worked faster than usual. Not long after the raid team killed the boss, the workers arrived at the boss' room. This flabbergasted the raid team. It had never happened before. Somehow Janu 'inspired' the miners and other workers with his hard work, and this definitely made Mr. Lukman happy. Happier than ever, indeed.

"As promised, you can take a magic crystal," said Mr. Lukman to Janu.

"Only one, Mr. Lukman?"

"Of course not, Miss Lina. Janu, you can take... three, Miss Lina?"

Lina, the White Mage, stared at Mr. Lukman's eyes seriously.

"Ok, take five... or six, but not the high quality ones."

"Thank you, Mr. Lukman."

"I owe you this one, Miss Lina."

"Don't mention it, Mr. Janu. You deserve it."

Back at his house

Ok, let's try imbuing weapons with magic.

'Craft"

...

...

'I only have six magic crystals. Two low quality, two medium, and two high. It seems that other people wouldn't know the differences at first glance. What should I try first? This is the annoying part of not knowing your class. I can't waste my magic crystals.'

...

...

"Fine. Just anything will do. I can just sell them."

The second chapter. Starting to write is difficult. But, it can be fun. The only problem is time. I'll try my best to keep updating. My chapters are 3,000+ words, I hope it can give you pleasure and satisfaction.
