5 Variant

I currently am on the ground barely awake with a bunch of corpses that some minutes ago were my companions, not that I am in a better condition. In front of me was a crater 2 meters deep and 3 meters large with a single person that seemed an assassin, so it was hooded. I swear that I shouldn't have gotten out of bed this morning. First with that variant, and now that assassin there.

Well, let's start from the beginning of the day, my name is Jonah and I am a mid C Rank Adventurer, member of the party "Sword of the Right". Ah right, all ranks in this world are calculated using letters, the lowest being F and the highest being SSS, but after the latter there are also the so-called "Breakers" that are ranked using numbers, for example Breaker-10, and they have an incredible strength, every number has a larger gap of power with the previous.

Today I had reunited with the party at the Guild Hall to plan how to kill the Salamander in the Scales Forest surrounding this city, Estias. Salamanders were the standard monsters that with time would evolve in a type of dragon, all the dragon-type creatures like Salamanders or Wyrms with age will become much more powerful, as they are also immortal to aging.

Our party was formed by 6 members: one healer, two swordsman, one attack mage, one scout and lastly an archer. Pretty standard, we were all in the D or C Rank.

We did not have to stay much as after half an hour or so we decided to depart immediately in the forest to do the quest.

While going to the center of the forest, we were pretty unfortunate as we encountered some variants, a thing that wasn't very normal as variants are pretty rare. You may be thinking, what are variants? Variants are type of monsters that for some reason when they evolved, or on their birth got a power or a characteristic that transformed them. In front of us was a Slime Variant that was black with cracks all over its body that exuded a dark purple light, while there were two dots that were red.

When we inspected it with a one-use item, it said that it was a "Cruel Slime", a slime variant capable of being a lot more flexible than other slimes and extend its body a lot, strangely the pretty rare item needed some seconds before it gave us the results. It isn't very strong, and it's peaceful, or so we thought, we were going to ignore it when it started to move unstoppably, it was extending then compressing itself over and over taking strange forms.

'Well, shit. I am in some sort of sense a slime, so what should I do? Well, I actually already planned what to do, I need a better form first and then start to become stronger. Also, that skill, [Mana Perception] is pretty convenient as it will be really useful having another sense of sight concentrated around viewing mana.'

While thinking of this and that, another message of the system was heard in his mind.

[External beings are trying to inspect Host, would Host like to disguise itself? (Y/N)]

'What the fuck? I just arrived! Yes, do it immediately system! Also, let me decide the race disguise, I don't want them to think a slime is a freaking goblin, it would probably allert them.'

[Apprehended, please think of the disguise]

After the last message, Aaron immediately activated the Mana Perception seeing four balls of energy floating in front of him, all four were letting out energy that circulated creating a figure of a humanoid body.

'Well, seems like this perception is more for fighting that anything else. Also, they are probably all human seeing how the mana is expanding and retracting'

He pondered for a few seconds before finally deciding to try to become a variant, obviously after asking the system if they existed and hearing a confirmation.

[Cruel Slime(Variant) : A peaceful variant with an extremely superior capability of control of the semi-liquid body, permitting it to expand and compress itself a lot more, it's dangerous if old and intelligent enough to use its abilities completely.]

I decided to try and eat them when they least will expect it, while they will walk away thinking I'm a puny slime that doesn't need any of their attention.

And, as I planned, they started walking away like nothing, I was surprised when they had that strange magical object to appraise me, when I asked the System, it said magical items where anything but cheap, so I think that these guys are probably veterans or powerful "adventurers", so explained the system.

After they stopped watching me I almost immediately appraised them, seeing they were all in the D or C Rank with two mages: a healer and a mage of ice. I decided that I would absorb the strongest swordsman that was Middle C Rank and probably the leader of the party.

'Absorption!' I suddenly started having strange ticks and my body started expanding before moving at an innatural speed and literally inglobing the poor human, it took a few seconds to stop the struggling of my prey and completely decomposing it in my slimy body. The others were not so happy about that.
