48 Glass Shards

"What?"

Yi Fan boldly stared right into Yi Fei's eyes that were a brown mixture of fear and panic. Yi Fei nervously bit her lip, instinctively scrunching up her patterned skirt. Despite her earlier hostility, Yi Fei didn't dare to think Yi Fan would say it. He had already sunk their relationship down the drain, he wouldn't dare to throw it off a cliff.

"Yi Fei came home late," Yi Fan's lips started to quiver but a forced grin was settled on his mouth. "With tons of sweat on her."

Yi Fei's eyes enlarged to a large degree, she so hatefully wanted to cover up Yi Fan's nasty mouth right now but doing so would only prove his case. She knew that Yi Fan was trying to make her look bad, trying to imply that she was out late at night with a guy doing things she shouldn't be doing. And it was working.

"Yi Fei... is this true?" Mr. Mo asked viciously. "You were out with a douchebag late at night?"

"She was," Yi Fan grew even more violent. "And when I asked her where she was, she couldn't tell me where."

"No..." Yi Fei hastily looked towards Mr. Mo with pleading eyes. He was her dear father, she was his precious daughter. He wouldn't believe Yi Fan right away, right?

"Yi Fei..." Mr. Mo growled. "Here I was praising you for your diligent studying, but you were out there acting like a f**king slut?!"Mr. Mo furiously slammed his fist down on the delicate dining table full of Yi Fei's prepared dishes, causing his daughter's glass cup to quickly fall and crash into a hundred pieces on the ground. The glass shards glimmered with transparency, its initial carvings transforming into intricate variances of non-crystalline fragments. Suddenly, it reminded Mr. Mo of his glitching phone screen of that day...

"Oh my god!" Yi Fei cried out. "It burns!"

Some of the glass pieces had struck Yi Fei's exposed legs after impact. The cuts caused Yi Fei to quickly bleed in numerous places, the blood looking alike to red paint splatter. Yi Fan frightfully jumped at this but was utterly confused at himself. Did he just harm his sister? Did he just cause his sister to bleed? He should apologize, he should get the first-aid kit, he should sweep up the glass shards before she could get hurt even more. But somehow, the next words that came out of his mouth betrayed his true feelings.

"That's karma for you," Yi Fan said blankly. He sat still in his seat as his sister cried out mournfully in pain.

"Clean this up," Mr. Mo stood up without a glance, his chair creaking all the way out, and threw his dirty napkin on his half-finished spaghetti carbonara. Yi Fei knew he was talking to her. As Mr. Mo headed out the room, Yi Fan gave one more nasty glance at Yi Fei before deciding to switch off the lights to let her understand the dark as he just had. And so, he left her alone in a dark room with bleeding legs and a hundred glass shards on the floor. And there was nothing she could do about it.
