8 The second examination

We finished testing our class and skills, so that tall women called the others to come in.

"Now that you know what you have to know about yourselves, we will examine if you're able to live as an adventurer. After all, not everyone can actually live past the first quest. You have to kill a living being most of the time. And if not, you will probably meet humans that will steal the quest item."

What she says is quite plausible. I lived in Japan my whole life and never thought about killing a living being.

"You all can go now, but we will meet in two hours at the northern gate. From there we will travel to the near mountain range. The examination will take approximately five days, so please pack up the stuff you think you need. And for the ones with recommendations from RANGERs and above, they can come with their recommender.

I looked at Pan. "Are you sure that I can do it?"

"Of course, if I didn't think about that, I wouldn't have filled in the adventurer sheet for you."

With that Pan smiled and stood up.

I still wasn't convinced. After all, I don't even know any possible method of fighting.

So I asked Pan again. "I don't think it's possible for me. I don't even know how to fight."

"Does anyone actually know? I don't think so. Everyone uses different styles in fighting so no one can say they know how to fight since there is no such thing as knowledge. There is just training and experience. Once you have to fight for yourself, the body itself will know what to do. It's in our instincts. Believe me."

"Hopefully you know what you're saying." No one from Japan knew how to fight because they learned it from experiencing a fight. They went to courses to learn it from others... I really don't trust Pans judgement.

We went back to the inn we stayed at and packed our stuff we left there. It wasn't much, mostly from Pan. After we were done, we ate some meal the inn had to offer and then went shopping for necessities I would need. Like clothing and a bag. A weapon while we're at it. In the end, we bought a short sword and a dagger.

The two hours had gone by pretty fast and we went to the northern gate. We weren't the last to come, thankfully.

When everyone was gathered, the tall women announced the beginning of the examination round and we set off.

________________

The journey wasn't as thrilling as I thought it would be. Within half a day we arrived at the bottom of the designated mountain. It was cleared of any possible monster which would be to high-level for us freshmen.

We set a base for anyone that wanted to quit the exam half way. We only finished in the evening so we slept there.

When the first light came through the foliage of the forest we were currently in, the tall women woke us up and kicked us out.

"What now?" I asked Pan.

"First we need to find a place with fresh water, then we will hunt us some food, I'm starving!"

Some people around us seemed to agree with Pan and went ahead.

"You'll lead." I stared at Pan baffled. I'll lead? Seriously?

"No! I won't" I boldly answered her.

"This is your exam. I won't lead, I am only here to save you in any critical situation. Everything else will be your job. To find water, food and to stay alive the five days you stay in this mountain.
