This is Nicholas' world; in an expanse of darkness this is all he has.

"This is it? My glorious second life is nothing but a stat screen from a shitty low budget MMO?!"

A thought Nicholas can't help but let slip out as he awoke.

"Wait, wait, wait. So, what even happened." Nicholas is lost in thought as he recalls the most painful moments from his previous life.

He trusted his friends as much as he trusted his family. He let them use his car whenever they needed to, he gave them money in times of need, and even went as far as to trust them with his own bank account info. His friends however, were overcome with greed and thus took anything they could get their hands on. They took off with his car, his wallet, clothes, and left him.

Nicholas was well off so he passed it up and wasn't too hurt, after all he had his parents whom he could come to in times of need. His parents died that night and with them he lost a large part of his support, financially and emotionally. Not knowing what to do, he took up gaming and soon became #1 in the VRMMO "Dragon Life" a VRMMO that prioritized real life skill over anything else.

Dragon Life was especially popular due to the ability to exchange gold into real money. Nicholas spent all his time obtaining the best set of armor and the highest level possible. He was a god amongst all characters but he had one downfall. In order to achieve success, fueled by hatred in a state of grief from losing his parents he had relentlessly killed many players.

He built a reputation as a prominent PKer and thus garnered a lot of hate, to which he responded with toxic and venomous words. He was swallowed by anger and malice. Soon enough karma caught up with him in many ways. On his way home from a popular VR arcade he was beaten and every valuable on him was taken including the account card needed to access his character in "Dragon Life." He lost everything.

His hatred and malice turned into sadness, depression, and finally acceptance. He decided he should move on with his life and decided to get a job as a waiter. It wasn't much but it payed the bills of his low-end apartment. One night his luck seemed to be turning up and he met a young lady in a fancy scarlet dress. This woman was the light of his life and they hit it off well. For a year this woman was his love and he would give anything for her.

In the middle of their second year Nicholas struck it big and hit the jackpot. He won the lottery of 100 million dollars. After receiving the money, he proposed to his girlfriend and she happily said yes. Sadly, luck was no longer on his side and half a year into his marriage his wife betrayed him and had him killed right after she had him write a will in which the sole beneficiary of all his money and property would be his wife. He was shot in the chest 6 times. He was wrought with grief and sadness in his final moments but it was short lived and he died quickly.

Feeling unconsciousness take him and accepting the darkness invading his vision whole heartedly, he drifted into a slumber in which he knew he would never wake. He felt himself drift in the darkness for what seemed to be an eternity. He did not think, he did not feel, he was long used to the nothingness and had just come to accept that this would be his existence when suddenly a large window flashed into view.

Back to present. "Why... Why... Why did she do it, she swore time and time again that she would never betray me as those fools had done 3 years ago. Yet, she did. For what?! All for some meaningless currency?!"

Nicholas cried out in anger.

He could not understand human greed. He was a man who only cared for relationships and the success of himself and those close to him, he held no value for material items.

After some time and many curses, he finally calmed and sighed, "No use crying over spilt milk. Now, what is this window. It reminds me of that game I played, 'Dragon Life' what a great game it was, that game had been nothing if not fun. But why did it appear here?"

He decided to examine the window and soon cried out in anger, "Curse you game devs! What could I possibly do as a single cell organism?! ALL ZEROS!! You have to be kidding me, even level 1 characters started with 30 in all stats. These comments are too outrageous, I'll hurt more than just an amoeba if these game devs continue to poke fun."

He calmed down once more and said, "It's not all bad, I can't complain about the little bit of intelligence it gave me, this skill is weird, and this title isn't too bad but, uh what am I going to do in a dark void, I. Can't. see." His thoughts were soon interrupted by a series of high-pitched game like pings.

His vision was suddenly lit up with an extremely bright grey-white void which filled his vision. Upon closer inspection he soon discovered many slightly transparent blobs which were pock marked on their insides with colorful strange looking objects. He suddenly felt the urge to move.

"Well, here goes nothing." He tried with all his might to move and was immediately overtaken with exhaustion, he paused, "... I can't even move, no, I will move!" after taking a rest he was filled with a desire he couldn't shake, he continued to try and move, time and time again he continued to rest and try again but alas he didn't budge. Taking one more rest he thought to himself, "If I do not move today, I shall die a failure; I will not let myself be a weakling." He tried as hard as he could muster and suddenly, he could feel it, motion!

He examined his progress and to his surprise... "I barely moved an inch; I am destined to be a failure" as he was overcome with depression and lost in his thoughts of what he might end up as, he suddenly heard the ping he has heard only once before.

He suddenly felt invigorated with new energy and began to ponder while staring at his stat sheet.
