39 The Truth (4)

Stephanie slowly approached William, she sat beside William and touched his shoulder.

William noticed his sister's presence, he wiped away the tears on his face and he started to calm his breathing. He sat straight and slowly looked at her sister's face. His face had a questioning look as if asking "Why?".

Stephanie removed her hand from Williams' shoulder and slumped on the chair she was sitting on. It seems the story will take a while.

"William, don't blame father for everything. I am also guilty for not telling you. At first, we just wanted to hide it from you, since you were too young. If you can remember, we did not have a lot of money at that time. The company was not as big as before. Father approached a lot of doctors, he wanted to find the slightest bit of hope for mothers sake." Stephanie paused and looked at Williams eyes.

She then continued, "However, it dawned upon father, you need money, a lot of money, as a matter of fact. He spends more time and effort trying to get the company to succeed. Father, as a no-name person, did not have anything to his name. No wealth or influence, people did not take him seriously William. I would see father looking helpless every time he returns home when people denied his request for business, doctors would tell him there was no hope." Stephanie gave a sigh as she said this, reminiscing about the past.

"Mother's situation was not well-known, so father was able to keep it a secret. He was able to keep the matter in silence. Our grandparents at the time were heartbroken with what happened with mother. They were old to begin with and after finding out their only child's condition. They fell ill and their condition worsened. That's why your memories of our grandparents are few, they started to blame themselves for what happened to mother and would spend their time with mother at the hospital."

"But Father never gave-up on mother. He said that it may take years, or even all his life, but he will never give up. As long as he was alive, he vowed to keep on trying and doing his best for mother's sake. One step at a time, he was able to succeed. He focused on technology, as science and technology goes hand in hand in development. It was then that he heard an opportunity in the US."

"He heard about a research on comatose patients having some small success, although it was still in the researching phase, father decided to grab the opportunity. The company was only starting to grow at that time, but he decided that this was a chance, his ray of hope."

"The company grew as we move from one place to another. The company's name started to flourish and father's name has started to be recognized. He was always one step ahead in finding research and giving it top priority by providing funds."

Stephanie hesitated a bit before continuing with her words, "When father heard about what happened with Director Ford, he felt devastated. You do know that the Fords has a lot of influence in the medical field, their name, especially Director Ford is synonymous to the most successful medical sciences in the country. Their family are donors and shareholders for big medical facilities in the country. Father found him while they were developing ways to awaken comatose patients that were heavily dealt with head trauma which caused their state of deep unconsciousness."

Stephanie looked at her mother before continuing, "Which is the same case as mother. Director Ford had finally had a small breakthrough in their process, it may be small but it was the best news father could ever hope for in a long time as the other researches have no results."

William who was listening was dumbfounded. He did not know how to process what his sister said.

Was it his fault? He thought back to the restaurant when Director Ford was filled with anger and raged.

William grabbed his head using both of his hands in distress. Thoughts keep running in his head as he was in a state of confusion. He slowly looked at his mother, who was sleeping on the hospital bed, his face was agonizing on the fact that it was his fault.

Would he have acted arrogantly if he knew from the start that it was all for their mother's sake?

Of course not!

He might have discussed things in a more diplomatic way. He would not be so smug about it, thinking that it was only a business deal.

But, now what?

What was he supposed to do?
