44 I Know (2)

While William was standing there looking constipated.

Mrs. Hill's voice was heard, "she only works till 5 PM, why don't you wait here as it's already 3 PM. You won't have to wait long." Mrs. Hill said with a kind smile as she continued, "Do you want anything to drink?"

"Anything is fine Aunty," William said while looking at his watch. He did not want to leave before talking with Mia. He has informed her sister and father about taking a couple of days off from work.

His sister's reply was, "Go for it!"

While his father's reply was, "Don't worry about the company."

William felt their family became closer once everything was out in the open. He and his father still have some difficulty conveying their feelings, but both of them are working on it.

While William was lost in his own thoughts, Mrs. Hill approached him with cold ice tea and apples on a tray. She poured tea on two glasses and sat down to peel some apples.

William woke up from his daze and grabbed the ice tea, he suddenly felt his throat was very dry and wanted a cold drink.

"I heard what happened with Mia." Mrs. Hill suddenly said.

William who was surprised by her sudden words almost spit out the tea in his mouth, he was wondering what the things Mia told Aunty.

"It was nice of you to offer her a good job and a good position, but I agree with Mia when she said, she got that position because of the favor you have for her." Mrs. Hill continued to peel the apple on her hands.

William, on the other hand, was waiting for Mrs. Hill next words, full of apprehension, as though he was a convict being given a verdict to life imprisonment.

Mrs. Hill continued with her words, "I know how you and Stephanie have been looking out for Mia for the last couple of months, and I'm really thankful for that." She paused for a bit as if thinking of her next words. William continued to listen to Mrs. Hill.

"However, she can never grow as a person if we keep on protecting her from growing up on her own."

The two sat quietly on the couch, lost in their own thoughts. William broke the silence by saying, "Aunty, I think you know by now that Mia is very special to me." His voice was soft but it sounded confident.

"Not as a friend." William looked at Mrs. Hill with his serious expression.

He then saw Mrs. Hill with a blooming smile on her face. She put down the knife she was holding..

Mrs. Hill patted his shoulder and said. "I know."

William was again lost for words, he wanted to tell Mia his feelings today but it ended up with Aunty knowing it first, or better yet, she knew since the beginning. However, when he thought about it, it wasn't a bad thing at all. Like they say, having a healthy relationship with your in-laws can help nurture a better relationship.

"I've always liked Mia since we were young. But Mia doesn't seem to feel the same. "William said with a wry smile.

"You know William." Mrs. Hill picked up her knife again as she continued, "She has been happier when you came back into her life. You might not have noticed it, but as her parent, you can see some changes in her. She wasn't really that active as a child to begin with, she has difficulty interacting with other people, and most of all expressing her feelings."

"You just have to make her realize how much you are a part of her life, just as much as she is yours." Mrs. Hill said while passing a peeled apple to William.

William was thinking of what Mrs. Hill said when he heard Mrs. Hill's next words, "I can't believe you took this long to take action William." Mrs. Hill said with a chuckle.

William did not know whether to laugh or cry with Aunty's words. However, he felt more relaxed when he heard her words.

"To be honest, you and I are more alike. Her father was also the dense type of person. I had to hook him up with my cooking. Once I stopped giving him food, he realized how much he needed me." Mrs. Hill's laughter could be heard in the house while she was relaying her love story to William.

The two did not even notice the time pass by as they discuss their own life stories with each other.

Some were funny while others sad, but they enjoyed each other's company.

"Oh look at the time, I'd better prepare for dinner." Mrs. Hill said as she stood up from her seat.

"You should stay with us for dinner. I'll make you something special since this is a special occasion." She winked at William as she walks to the kitchen while humming a tune.
