40 Contemplation

Mia's House

Mia woke up at the same time she always does. However, today was different she did not have a reason to get out of bed. Mia gave a sigh and went to the bathroom with heavy steps. Before coming out of her room, she made sure that her expression was natural. Although it was her decision to resign, she still had some misgivings about her decision.

Once she sat at the table, she saw her mother preparing their breakfast. She took a breath and started to the conversation, "Mother, I have something to tell you." Mia stated.

Her mother looked at Mia, seeing her daughter's serious expression, she sat down in front of Mia to listen to what she was about to say.

Once Mia saw that her mother was comfortable in her seat, she started telling her mother about what happened yesterday. However, she did not tell the vicious rumors that the employees were saying about her. She decided to tell her mother the truth that William hired her and gave her a position, she felt that she was not deserving of the job so she resigned from it.

Mia was waiting for her mother's reaction. Her mother's face was not of anger, she had an understanding smile as she looked at Mia with keen eyes. Her mother could tell that Mia was not telling the whole truth, however, she did not want to pressure her daughter and accepted the explanation Mia gave.

"You never really liked big companies." Her mother said with a knowing smile then stood up and gave Mia a hug.

"Don't worry Mia. I know you'll be able to find a job that you truly like." She gave Mia a kiss on the cheek as she went back to the kitchen and continued cooking their breakfast.

Mia heaved a sigh of relief when she heard her mother's words. It felt like a load was lifted from her shoulders. Looking back at it, she really did not enjoy the work she did for the company, sure the salary and benefits were wonderful, and yet, she did not feel fulfilled.

The only thing she was looking forward to was seeing William.

"Huh", she was surprised by this sudden thought that sprung up from her head. They did not speak in the company, however, she was able to gaze at him from afar. From time to time, she would feel Williams gaze and they would both smile at each other when one noticed the other. Her chest suddenly felt stifled. She stood up and put a leash on Happy, she wanted to get out and sort her feelings.

She went out of the door and headed out to the familiar streets.

Mia and Happy went around the neighborhood. They just walked around while looking at the usual places they pass through.

As Mia and Happy were both walking, they ended up at the neighborhood park.

"It's been a while." She thought to herself. Looking around, everything seemed so small now. The playground has changed, the equipment's improved. Sure they have deteriorated, and it was better for safety. She went around the park and let Happy run around, She sat down at one of the swings and held on the chains. She pushed herself from the ground which made the swing move.

"Ah, this brings back memories. William would always push behind me while I enjoy the swinging motion with glee."

She quietly sat there, the only sound one can hear was the creaking of the swing that needed lubrication.

Mia passed the time, just sitting there.

When it was lunchtime, she called for Happy. She got lost in her own thoughts that she forgot about Happy running around without a leash. She stood up and called again, but Happy was still nowhere to be found.

She walked around the park, Happy might have wandered farther than she thought. She was already worried when she heard barking noises. It wasn't far from her, so she ran. She ran as fast as she could.

Full of sweat on her forehead due to the afternoon sun shining brightly, she was catching her breath from the strenuous exercise. She was surprised at what she saw. Lo and behold, there was Happy playing happily with another dog, they were chasing each other, going round in circles.

She was relieved to find her safe and sound. She approached Happy but stopped and her tracks when she saw the person sitting on the bench while enjoying a can of cola.

He looked at her with a beaming smile and said,"I knew you were around here since the little princess is running around here." He gave a short laugh as he said this. He was looking at the two dogs running around.

"Dr. Canes, what are you doing here?" Mia asked with surprise. He was the last person she wanted to see as she remembered what happened the last time she visited the pet store.

"I'm on my lunch break and decided to let one of the stray dogs that we recently adopted to play around for a while. She hasn't been doing well with the other dogs, but look at that, Wendy seems to enjoy Happy's company." Dr. Canes said with his usual charming smile.

Mia's heart was beating rapidly as she saw this.
