28 Who Will Protect Me Then?

<WU JIE TYNA>

<recovery complete.>

<Administering vial.>

<The effect will be visible in a few moments.>

<Host's vitals have returned to normal.>

<Emotions stable.>

<End of scan>

Leaving the head of the Jymer unwillingly, I trudged to the shore, releasing an exhale of reprieve when I had finally touched dry land after such an experience.

My body slowly settled down, the damage and loss of myself fading as if a dream.

<Host, the trauma from your past life will be sealed for a few years, is that OK?>

"Yes," I agreed that trauma, a nightmare from my life back on earth, sealing them all would be a relief, so I can focus on surviving.

<Host, please take note. During this time as you grow in strength, will slowly begin to recall various events>

Losing my sister, who sacrificed her freedom to ensure mine.

I questioned the system in a slightly breathy voice.

"Will it prevent me from bringing out my full potential during danger?"

<Host, if your power breaks, it's confined – there is nothing I can do –  but losing yourself while still being underdeveloped a danger that advise you not to take.> Truly? So, my system is so weak? How pathetic is this thing!? Alright, I need to stay calm having it is much more convenient than having nothing.

"What should I do?"

<Host, I need to scan and give you the correct answer at a later date>

I didn't bother replying I could no longer focus; it seems the stress had been too much for my mind and body, ah. I am so weak, hopefully, I truly become stronger soon.

Around me, the snow continued to fall. The mostly silent system once administering the vial and constant warnings was a new feeling unlike before.

Knowing that it will stay silent until I was near death or discovered, I struggled to keep myself upright, but the calming effect entered my bloodstream and I passed out, with my last conscious thought bracing for me to fall on the ground, knowing that the girl could not support me.

<Once you have reawakened, host, your selected memories will be sealed until are strong enough to resist the loss of control> the mechanical voice of the system echoed.

When next I opened my eyes, it was to hear weeping. The person seemed to have realised that I was awake. In turn, the weeping suddenly ceased, leaving around me in blessed silence.

It was Wincu. I noticed her voice, when she spoke, seemed slightly hoarse.

"Oh, Wu Jie, you have finally awakened."

Wow, she could have been an actress back on earth playing that part. Look how quickly the waterworks had been cut off. If not from her slightly red eyes no one would have known that this female had been by my side weeping as if someone had died.

" Mmm, how long have I rested?"

"Four days but-"

"OK,"

"Wu Jie…"

I sighed. From how she spoke, I knew exactly what she wanted so I had to give her a look to warn her.

After a few moments, I decided to speak words as if torn from me.

"When I am ready, I will explain, but if my secret is out, I will tear out your heart and make you eat it,"

I watched her draw in herself crying again. Annoyed and hungry I snapped.

"In the school, we will never be shown mercy. Crying is a weakness; you must know that tears are precious. Shedding them so easily is wasteful. Every one of us has our secrets we wish not to tell."

I said this softly. Perhaps I've grown soft after that experience, but I felt that saying that to her had to be said gently.

I should have let her die a long time ago.

"You seem so normal now, your hair, your eyes and skin..."

"Did I look like a monster in your eyes?"

"No Wu Jie, you looked... You looked-"

A knock sounded, and the voice of Cehn could be heard.

"Wincu, has she awakened?"

"I have, Cehn."

"Good, I have a bowl of bone soup and the head from the Jymer has been left on the patio, I have placed it in my storage. Do you want it?"

"Yes, bring the soup,"

I said sitting up. Taking the bowl, I began to spoon a bit at a time in my mouth it had a light taste that slowly filled my stomach. Satisfied, I relaxed a bit.

"So, Wu Jie, I am sure you are aware we have questions."

<body has been recovered 48%>

Once the system spoke, I rose from the bed flinging off the sheets and padded from my rooms.

Did I have to answer them?

Do I owe them anything?

My meat shields failed.

I was eaten alive and had...

Turning to view the room I exited, I took out a long coat and pulled on socks and shoes then headed outside to breathe in the cold.

It seems I will forever fear a large body of water where I could not see the depth. What if I had to do a test in water, what then?

Will I lose it again?

I could not believe that I had almost been eaten, felt my flesh being broken down and slowly re-

I could not think about it to drive myself back to that one way again.

What if I really lost it?

Who will protect me then?

"Wu Jie?"

This girl again. Breathing out again forcefully I leaned against the house crossing my legs by the ankles and closed my eyes.

Since my emotions were blocked my mind didn't ponder over it much.

I just thought she would give it a rest for a bit, so I opened my mouth and spoke.

"My mother had thought that if I came looking like that, I might attract unwanted attention, so vials were prepared to alter my eyes hair and look a bit."

What mother had said was true: no matter what world humans go to, they will always have greed.

"Oh..." Wincu said softly. Cehn walked closer and stood in front of me.
