Born to Chinese parents who moved to Taiwan, Gao Markus (last name, then first) was the firstborn to the couple known among the top three families in Taiwan, Master Gao and Madam Wu. His brother, the second son to take over the Wu family, was installed as heir since the others had unfortunately died out. This brother had stayed obedient and was now recognised as the Wu family's head and the only heir. This left Gao Markus, at the age of twenty-three, free to do as he wished. He decided to travel, making money all the while. He never planned on staying at his parent's side, especially when they had wanted to join him to the second most powerful Taiwanese family, the Tsai.
