Synopsis

DINDI After Dindi got the news that he was going to join The Conquerors School, he could not hide his joy. No one in his village, “Mutakha”, had ever joined secondary school. He had, therefore, broken a record, and to leave the retrogressive village of drop-outs was no mean effort. Dindi had worked hard virtually everywhere! In school, at home, in their local church even at Mama Pima’s (alcohol den) just to make ends meet. He was loved by everybody because he ran all sorts of errands for them and being a fatherless son to his mother as his age-mates at school mocked him, he had no reason to look for friends. His friend was work some fathers used to tell their sons to emulate him as he seemed he would be a good father in the future. The time to go to the prestigious school was fast approaching yet he had not raised any money for shopping and leave alone his fees. He tried to talk to the people he had been working for but the thought of their loyal hand going away to a school where their sons had not merited stood between them. It is said some said behind his back that he would never make it, like father like son even though he was unknown. His mother went to all the women groups she knew of but they turned her down for her chronic inability to pay debts. Her friend, Mama Timo, had money but felt Mama Dindi was trying to climb too long a ladder. Matters got worse when she took her animal to the market to sell but there was no willing buyer unless at half the price she was quoting. You know why? Of course, your guess is valid but, they said it would take them five years to bring the animal back to life. Without any other choice, she sold the cow and this only helped her raise the fare they needed to get them to school. On the set day, mother and son arrived at the school gate.
