Devils Among Men

In every world, it is a common fact that if you don't jump to a higher building, you will always live under the shadows of the taller building, unless you are lucky enough to crash while attempting to jump over. As a hitman in his past life, Gu Mickey knew this fact very well. Waking up in an anime he last saw 6 years before his death, where kind sages were the first devils and demons were even more sinister, Gu Mickey must use the power hidden among his discarded F-grade talent to rise to the top and find a way back home with his abilities intact. "Earth is a place where everything appears fine on the surface, but you can't help but wonder what secrets lie hidden behind closed doors. Why would I want to be anywhere else?"

Wednesday's Quest [2]

A serene silence covered the western edge of Acoustic City. The wind made the trees sway to and fro, leaving them dropping their leaves on the ground. As the winds of time moves, these leaves would turn into nutrients.

If these leaves were from a profound plant, then the soil would have rich nutrients fit enough to grow another batch of such plants. If it were a whole tree, then it would be far better—the "kill one, get ten for free" trope.

Most Book Lords would claim these places as their own and make orchards and gardens to grow that same variant of plant for generations.

The four major clans and the mayor faction have monopolized most of these places, making them into their plantations.

Smaller factions would be able to make orchards at most; some can only afford a single-bed garden.

In one of the gardens, a profound beast at the elementary realm was seen circling such a garden.

The only intimidating feature about the garden, was the fence itself, adorned with deadly spikes and electric currents potent enough to kill a Book Lord.

The profound beast used its front hooves to scratch the ground, making up a small hole.

The profound beast, a Stretching Boar with elementary realm cultivation, stood confidently in its pink skin, unfazed by the spiked and electrified fence.

Compressing its body, it let out small grunts as it transformed. Its body flattened into a disk shape, with four short legs, sharp tusks, dark eyes, and pig ears.

Whoosh...

With a burst of strength, the boar sprang into the air, leaving behind small cracks in the ground. As it soared over the two-meter-high fence, its magnificent boar body was on full display.

Despite being only an elementary realm, the Stretching Boar possessed enough power to take down some high ranking profound Beast.

Bam-!

It landed in the garden with steam coming out of its mouth, expressing its joy.

The Stretching Boar glanced to its right and left, taking in the rows of 10-foot trees planted on the small hill. The trunks were slender and gnarled, while the leaves emitted a soft, silver-blue glow that made the boar's mouth water.

Ignoring the blue-ice lily plants, it charged towards the nearest tree and head-butted it with a light thud, sending the tree crashing to the ground.

As the tree fell, oval-shaped silver fruits rolled across the ground, while others remained clinging to the twisted branches.

These were silver-glow olives, a rare and precious elementary realm profound plant native to Fairy Heaven.

The oil extracted from these olives could be used to create luxurious lotions that smoothed and rejuvenated the skin, making even the oldest look youthful again. Furthermore, the leaves of the silver-glow olive tree possessed vast medicinal properties, making them a crucial ingredient in most spirit realm potions and pills.

The pink boar ignored the leaves, even stepping on them as it went straight towards the olives on the ground and those stuck on the branches.

As time went on, it kept on knocking down some of the olive trees. Its stomach almost seemed like a bottomless pit.

When the sun was just past its mid-point, it received a vicious attack near its hide area.

Grr-!

It released a loud grunt that shook some of the olive leaves. The attack wasn't wide, but it was 3cm deep, igniting the boar's fighting spirit.

With red blood shooting out of its hind area like urine, the boar turned back to look at its attacker with malevolent eyes.

Its resolve didn't change even after discovering that its attacker was a chubby red raven the size of an adult human's palm that had just started growing feathers.

Chirp-! Chirp-!

The young blood raven made small cute sounds as it circled around in the air, fueling the rage in the wild boar, which quickly charged at it.

X kept his distance, after all, he had the aerial advantage. He flew over the electric fence, and the pink boar used its innate ability and followed behind.

Swish-!

A whistling sound was released as it charged after X... but it could only jump high, and soon it began to fall.

Its eyes locked on the place it was going to land and saw a huge pit that was thrice its size.

Its survival instincts kicked in, and it controlled its velocity by turning its fat body to the side.

Wham-!

It managed to land on the edge of the pit; its front legs were already in the pit.

Before the stretching boar could make its body stand on higher ground properly, it got hit on its hind region by a shovel.

Bam-!

The wild boar could only grunt as it got sent flying into the pit. Taking advantage of his fat body, Mickey pulled his rifle from his primeval world and shot at all its hind legs.

Bang-! Bang-!

Four bullets penetrated the boar's hind legs, and it lost its ability to spring. It showed a lot of tenacity as it tried to stand up.

Although he had been training with his rifle, it still bothered him to use 20 spirit coins, just to use it.

"Stop trying to make things difficult."

Mickey's voice was cold.

Inside his primival world, his Qi was assaulting the Blood Blade Grimoire, until he got it's approval.

He pointed his right palm, and a red sword started to escape. It was thin yet sharp enough that Mickey could feel the wind being cut. The moment five units of Qi were used, he shot the blade.

Swish-!

Thick-!

The boar's left front leg was pierced. The attack left a small wound on the other leg, and Mickey smiled.

"Attack strength can be solved by making it sharp. The speed was slow; even I could see its trajectory."

Next, he made the blade float above the pit he made. This time he made it big yet sharp and could feel the units of his Qi rapidly decreasing.

'Go!'

The moment he was left with 8 units of his Qi, he sent the blood blade that had reached the size of an ordinary human flying towards the electric fence. To stop the attack from falling, he had to send ten more units of his clear yellow Qi to the Blood Blade Grimoire.

Boom-!

A small explosion sound took place when the attack clashed with the electric fence.

Nevertheless... the blood blade was evaporated by the electric currents.

Mickey's face was indifferent.

"I expected as much."

X, who was making circles quickly, came to Mickey, making a lot of chirping sounds.

Gu Mickey could tell that it wanted to inform him that someone was watching them, but he had already expected this.

X, who wanted to be thanked by its Master, was suddenly clutched. It tried to free itself, but it couldn't.

Mickey's cold gaze landed on him before he threw him into the pit where the pink boar was resting.

"Kill it, and if you don't, don't come back to me again."

Blood Ravens at the lower realms don't even attack, but Mickey was training X to be self-sufficient. Mickey wanted X to be able to hunt by himself and be able to go into battle.

If they hadn't used the stretching boar's stupidity to their advantage, both of them would have died.

Chirp-! Chirp-!

X tried to protest, but Mickey just ignored him as he walked towards the olive garden, leaving the poor bird hopelessly at the boar.

For a moment, it thought about waiting until the beast died, but it knew Mickey would eat him for dinner if he didn't do it.

Blood Ravens were naturally intelligent creatures, but X was even more of a special case.

He was raised by a human, well... half-vampire.

He started flapping his wings and could feel that the pink boar was even more dangerous; its will to live was making it refuse its fate.

X would have gone for its belly with his beak, but it was pregnant, hence its belly was super tough at the moment.

He could only go for its neck!

Making circles around his prey, X charged straight at the boar's neck with his talons like an eagle.

However, the boar saw this and took the little bird off-guard. Its tusk hit the blood raven on the belly and sent it flying towards the walls.

Thud-!

X collapsed to the ground with a light sound. His body was in pain. If he could, he would, but he just felt numb. One of his bird bones was really broken.

X's eyes felt heavy, but he had a vision of Mickey eating him and gathered enough energy to start flying again.

He was just too young to die!

He relentlessly attacked the boar, but he couldn't land a hit. However, unlike the first times, now he was able to dodge the tusk counterattacks.

X's hollow black eyes showed a malevolent light as he made circles in the air. He couldn't kill the boar without getting past its tusks.

But he had an idea…

He charged at the pink boar. It moved its head to smash X again. However, the little blood raven used its talons to maintain a firm grip on the boar's tusk.

X used the moment when the boar tried to throw him off to fly towards its neck and use his long black beak to drill a hole in the boar's neck.

The area was soft like a cloud, and X went deeper as blood splashed over the place, and the boar finally died!

On the other end, Mickey had just finished putting a fur blanket over the electric fence that protected the olive garden.

'I am sure X has already run away. I wonder what punishment I should give him.'

Mickey had invested a lot into X, and he really would be sad if something happened to him. Little did he know, in X's eyes, he was a scary dad.

With his rubber gloves and shoes, Mickey used the blanket to help himself jump into the olive garden.

Looking at the profound plants around him, a vicious light flashed in his eyes.

"I should leave him enough to not suffer a loss or profit."
