Dee Sunshine

This is the story of Robbie, living in exile, having run away from a sordid past. He lives alone in a drug-addled un-reality with his secret past safely buried. By severing all connections with his old life he had hoped to re-create himself anew. However, despite his best intentions and various half-hearted efforts, it is obvious he has failed. His life is in a rut. Then he meets Catherine. Initially, just another one night stand. But Catherine is different. There is something about her that enchants and mystifies him. Despite his fears, he gradually lets her into his heart, forcing himself to break down the emotional barricades he has carefully constructed. Eventually, Robbie realises that his hopes of a new life with Catherine will come to nothing if he doesn’t face up to himself. He takes the first steps on the road to self-awareness and self-forgiveness: a difficult and sometimes painful process, but one that appears to bear fruit. Then, just as Robbie’s beginning to experience the sort of happiness that love brings, his world is shaken asunder. During a night of drug-fuelled passion, a blood vessel bursts in his brain, causing him such extreme pain that he ends up in a coma. When he comes out of it he discovers he is severely physically disabled. Then to add insult to injury, Catherine abandons him. Depressed and at times suicidal, Robbie rails against the gods, whilst resigning himself to the idea that this is his fate: that he is being punished for his past. It would seem that Robbie is destined to endure the remainder of his life in a state of misery and self-pity: that only a miracle could save him now. But who would expect miracles in these secular days? Certainly not Robbie.
