2 Chapter 1 -Welcome home

Flashback 1 year ago

It's hard to believe I'm back in Aventura, Florida. This place is so familiar, but it feels nothing like home.

Slowly, I walk onto the balcony. My eyes close, feeling the mist of the ocean. Hesitantly opening my eyes, I look out into the ocean with vile memories of the night I lost my family.

My mom would spend time with me on the deck, watching the waves of the ocean. She would tell me the ocean was the most beautiful art because the scenery never changes, its ways there. I used to believe that, now it's my curse.

"Alena!! Let's toast"

My best friend forces a drink in my hand while swinging her glass in the air clearly tipsy.

"Umm I never toasted before but here we go! To our first night back in your hometown". She holds my hand, fighting the tears in eyes as she continues the toast

"You're my family, so your family is my family too. I will do everything and anything to help you find peace"

Wiping away the tear that rolled down my cheek, I clink my glass against hers. "I couldn't ask for a better partner Margo"

We drink down every drop of wine. My emotional best friend finally lets her tears fall. "Your all I have Alena"

I pull her into a smothering hug, both of us nearly falling over.

"Your all I have too, you will always be family to me Margo" She smiles with heavy tears streaming down her face

It's true, Margo became my best friend 12 years ago when her father rescued me that night from the boat explosion that killed my family.

She pulls me to the living room, literally pushing me down on the couch. She jumps down next to me like an exited 5 years old with a new toy. She turns her laptop towards me and points to a woman's profile.

"Say hello to our first enemy "

My parents were investors in a new tech company that launched years ago. My mother hired an assistant named Nadia Burrows. She was good at her job until see became obsessed with my father.

She wanted to take everything away from my mother. My father turned her down and promised to save her job if she moved on. She agreed and later organized the travel plans for my family's cruise that ended up in an explosion.

Margo opens up multiple documents, labeling our target's background, medical history, including phone messages and recent locations. Margo was always good at hacking, but her skills have exceeded over the years.

She stands up clapping her hands and reaches for the pool stick on the side of the fireplace. She rushes back and points the pool stick back to her computer.

"Nadia Burrows, 48, MBA in business administration" She paces back in forth as if she's presenting a PowerPoint in front of the classroom.

I sit back amused and let her continue.

"She spent the past 10 years working at Hensen Administrators. No children. Widowed" She pulls out an invitation and throws it at me. Rude ass.

"She will be joining the 10th Fairlee Charity Organization tomorrow at 7pm and my awesome self was able to hack the guest list and add my name. You my red headed bff are my plus one"

I grab the full bottle of wine and refill our glasses. I'm so proud of her. I will never be able to repay her and her family for what they done for me all the years.

...............

I decided to spend my first early morning walking the beach like I use to. The ocean will always be my curse, but I can't escape it. I look out into the horizon trying to contain the memories that haunt me.

My phone vibrates, causing me to break from my trip down memory hell. I sigh looking at the caller id, its 6:58am in the morning

"Hi Zain" I roll my eyes waiting for his response.

"So good to hear your voice beautiful".

"I told you I need space while I do this. I can't be distracted. My enemies are my priority right now."

The line goes silent. I try to say something, but he cuts me off.

"I know princess, I just miss you and needed to hear your voice. If my father didn't have me stuck here training our new client I would be there fighting by your side."

I start walking back to penthouse as people start to crowd the beach.

"I would love nothing more than to have you here" I know he's smiling right now, I wish I could see him.

"How's my sister?"

"Margo is... Margo" We both start laughing as I see Margo wailing her arms at me from our balcony.

"Protect her for me Alena"

"With my life Zain, I have to go"

He hesitates and nervously blurts out his next words "You know I love you Alena. When this is over, will you give us a chance"

My heart starts pounding, I was never good with expressing my feelings. I can't feel anything but pain

"I..."

I quickly press end, FUCK. I can't deal with this right now.

I met Zain and Margo when their father saved my life. The past 11 years we grown close. We worked out together, trained together, slept together. Yeah. I lost my virginity to my best friend's brother and the sex just kept happening after that.

Eventually he wanted to be together, but I couldn't promise him a relationship. He deserved someone better. Not someone with heavy baggage seeking revenge. I'm a lost soul and he doesn't deserve someone fucked up. He would be the person I would open my heart to if I could but I'm not capable of love.

"You okay Alena?"

"Yea, your brother says hi by the way" I look at a curious Margo as I walk into our penthouse. She follows behind me grinning as I walk to my room.

"That asshole, he called you but not me, that lovestruck idiot is so in love with you"

Before I could say something I regret, I notice one of Margo's slutty dresses on my bed.

"Margo this dress is...wow" desperately changing the subject I lift the dress that was laid out on my bed. A spaghetti strap champagne dress with a slit.

She runs in the closet and yells out "We are ruining lives tonight, might as well do it sexy!"
