2 Chapter Two: Chosen Path

"What do you mean?"

The young orphan had shown a bit of an emotion for the first time.

The officer smiled at him.

"Obviously, It was a demon; basically from the Abyss."

Granger looked disappointed. He thought he'll discover something nothing obvious this time.

Matthaius noticed this and immediately called him out.

"Since I told you that it is I who saved you from your scorching house, I recognized the assailant who took out your parents' life."

"Ok, get it straight!"

Mathaius doesn't plan to spoil him with countless informations. He wants to win Granger's interest first.

"When the right time comes. If you decided to be a demon hunter, then I will teach you everything I've known about combat. By then, you can finally avenge your parents' death."

Granger turned his back planning to return to the monastery.

"Unless you want to be stuck doing household chores for the rest of your life." Matthaius added.

The young boy paused for awhile...

"I'll think about it... sir."

...then continues his way.

Granger went inside his room, without any care to the world at all. Other kids were busy talking with each other, playing, talking, doing what normal kids do.

He dived into his bed faced down.

He's spacing out.

What Matthaius told him earlier keeps bugging him.

Suddenly, a music from a sonata filled the room.

"That boring music again?" other kids were heard murmuring.

But to him, that music soothes his heart. Its as if it's him to stand up and do something.

So, he stood up from his bed and look for the one playing the piece.

Again, he saw Luna, the one who played the same sonata before.

She noticed him and called him.

"Hey Granger, what's wrong?"

Granger, got an awkward vibe and turned back.

"Umm nothing"

"Is my rendition annoying?"

Granger thought, the caretaker made him feel uneasy with the music when its not. It is the only thing that soothes him. He's been concerned if that made her stop playing.

"Um no, I... just... want to hear more."

Luna became surprised upon what she had heard.

"That's surprising! Almost everyone in the monastery doesn't show any interest at all."

Granger was confused... he isn't aware what to say.

"Ummm... sorry?"

Luna smiled. "Come on, dont be, if you want, I can teach you."

Granger became speechless.

"Come here, I'll teach you everything I've known."

The once called "odd" kid because he hath shown no interest in anything had shown interest into something.

Being a demon hunter or a musician there are 2 things he needs to choose right now.

Day after day, Granger goes to the music room to practice with Luna. Though being a tone deaf, it doesn't stop him in doing his best of the only thing he knows he wanted to do.

His rendition is a bit lousy though, but Luna told him that it can becone handy soon and it might be an asset only he can have.

After practice, he is assigned to clean the room and while he cleans the storage, he noticed something interesting.

AN ODD LOOKING VIOLIN CASE!

His curiousity emerged.

He decided to pick it up and showed it to his teacher.

"That case is something special."

Granger became curious. Yet his eyes doesn't show any of it.

"That case contains a violin. My mentor owned it. He taught me how to play the lnstrument. However, one cold evening he told me that he decided to become a demon hunter. He was so discreet about the reason why. The last thing I know is that he decided to go south from the empire where the demons were residing. Since then, I never heard of him."

Granger returned the case to where he took it.

He continued cleaning the storage and there he saw a secret door. His curiousity emerged as he decided to open it and thus he saw piles of gold and other jewelries. Its as if it looks like a treasury.

He decided to close the door and finished his job as soon as he can.

Luna is waiting for him outside the music room.

"Granger, are you done?"

"These things in the storage are these the empir...."

Luna immediately interuppted him!

"Shhhh...you mustn't say anything about it!"

"Sorry."

A voice suddenly appeared from a distance.

"Kid where are you?"

It is Matthaius!

"What do you want?"

"Oh kid, there you are! Have you decided yet?"

Luna interuppted their talk.

"Sir, what's this all about?"

"I'd like to make this kid the best demon hunter when he grows up!"

"I can't let you do that! Granger is my student and he'll be a musician who serves the monastery when he grows up!"

"Its not yours to decide! How about we ask the kid himself?"

Both Luna and Matthaius turned their heads towards Granger.

"Ummm...as of now, I'd like to continue what I am doing right now." Granger spoke with a low tone.

Matthaius sighed...

"Ok kid I understand...but If someday you decided to be a demon hunter, there's always a room for you. Contact me if ever you changed your mind.

3 YEARS LATER...

Granger continued his life being trained by his teacher. His 18th birthday is fast approaching and by then, he needs to finalize his decision whether he decides to be a demond hunter or a person who serves the monastery for the rest of his life.

Yet, even for three years, the invitation of an officer into being a demon hunter hasn't vanished from his thoughts.

In reality, he's still confused in which path he should choose.

That evening, around midnight, Granger was awakened by a sonata he is very familiar of...

"She's at it again."

Even if his bedroom is far away from the music room, he can clearly hear every note his teacher plays.

The cold breeze of the night had completed the soothing vibe of the surroundings.

Until...

...the music stopped!

"That's unusual." he thought.

He stood up from his bed and walked towards the music room to check what happened.

His heart is racing fast as he slowly approaches the room.

His sweat is slowly dripping.

He is few steps away from the room.

Then...

His eyes widened as he saw Luna's body on the ground. And five no maybe six unknown individuals were escaping from the window, each carrying bags of treasures and gold.

Thieves!

One of the thieves saw him and said...

"Someone saw us, I have to silence him!"

But one of the theives forbids him.

"It's him! We were told not to kill him."

Granger was surprised about what happened... all he's been focused on is his violin teacher, Luna.

He didn't do anything until the thieves escaped through the window.

He isn't afraid of them... its just that it took a great toll on his emotions when the only parent he had left is on the verge of death.

After the thieves left, he rushed towards his teacher and carried her head towards his arms.

Luna who still has a little bit of energy left uttered her last words.

"Gran...ger, that... vio...lin ca..se is... not an...or..dinary case. It.. was ....my...mas..ter's weapon. The ...vio...lin...in side...could...create a resonance...which can...sl...ip throu...gh the demon's... thoughts...It can even be transformed into a long...ranged weapon.Its yours.... now!"

Granger's eyes had shown an emotion Luna haven't seen in the past three years.

It is the eyes of hatred.

Luna concluded her last words...

"I...went...at your villa..ge few ...year...s back in ..order...to find ...any remains ...from...your.. house...that you...can use. In my...room...there is a box.... under the bed...and I recovered...a black leather jacket...it was miraculously... saved from...the fire...with it is...a long...barelled...revolver...I'm afraid...I can't...keep you on the....monastery...you...need..to find...your own identity."

And thus Luna fell on Granger's arms...

...dead.

He immediately went to the storage and took the violin case, then rushed towards Luna's room and opened the box. There he saw the leather jacket and the long barelled pistol. There he saw six bullets as well.

He took everything put on the jacket and decided to pursue the thieves.

On the way, he saw Matthaius and Tigreal together with their army rushing outside the gates of the empire.

"Hey kid, where are you going?" asked Matthaius

"That doesn't concern you!" he coldly replied.

"Of course it does! we serve as city guards, we can't let the citizens out in the open especially when murderous thieves are out there in the open!"

"I wanna help too, I can't be a demon hunter if I cower now!"

Matthaius even though the situation is tough, smiled.

"So you finally made up your mind?"

Granger rushed outside the gate with his furious eyes saying...

"Yep, I'll be a musician and a demon hunter at the same time!"
